6.0L & 6.4L Competition Head Gasket Installation Procedure

Ford 6.0L & 6.4L Powerstroke

Contents:

2 Gasket Bodies

8 Inner steel rings

8 Dynamic Wire Combustion Rings

8 Outer steel rings

1 Can of spray Hylomar

1. Remove the cylinder heads per service manual

2. Order new cylinder head bolts (This is necessary due to the “Torque to Yield” bolts)

3. Clean head surface and examine for any surface imperfections and determine

if the heads must be resurfaced and/or a valve job to be done or is able to be re-used.

4. The heads need to be machined per Hypermax drawing HYP-1274.

5. Lap the grooves with the rented/purchased tool from Hypermax to ensure a desired

sealing surface, a surface finish is specified on the machining drawing and is a must for

The combustion rings to properly seal. Failure to do so will result in combustion gas

leaking into the coolant system.

6. Clean and assemble the heads.

7. Clean block deck surface and inspect for any surface imperfections.

8. Spray both sides of the head gasket bodies with the enclosed Hylomar spray.

9. Install head gasket body on to block deck surface, be sure it lays flat.

10. Using clean anti-seize, completely coat the inner, dynamic, and outer rings.

11. Install the three rings into the cylinder head groove using anti-seize to retain them.

12. Carefully place the clean head onto the block, be sure not to damage the rings by

dropping the head on them. The head will lay evenly on the rings from the front cylinder

to the rear cylinder. If not, the head must be removed to ensure that the rings are in

place.

13. Torque the head per the service manual or to enclosed figure A. New bolts are a must to

insure proper sealing performance.

Note: The use of new factory cylinder head bolts is needed to ensure the ultimate performance of this gasket system. The performance of cylinder head studs” has not been evaluated or required with this application. Failure to follow these recommendations may result in a cylinder head gasket failure. The use of cylinder head studs is done at your own risk. New cylinder head bolts and ARP studs are available through HYPERMAX.

NOTE: These gaskets use a common 18/20mm dowel holes. Some 6.0L and the 6.4L use 20mm dowel holes. Use needle nose pliers to break the tabs to fit the 20mm dowels. There are 3 tabs on each of two dowel holes.
