1. What are the three major signs of a stroke? The three major signs of a stroke are 1) pain in the center of the chest 2) low blood pressure 3) loss of hearing.
2. What is diabetes? Diabetes is a disease in which your blood glucose levels are too high.
3. What should you give a victim who is showing signs of low blood sugar? If a victim is showing the sign and symptoms of low blood sugar you should give them a chocolate bar or some diet soda.
4. What is it called when blood stops flowing to part of the brain? When blood stops flowing to a part of the brain it is called a stroke.
5. If a stroke occurs on the victim’s left side of the brain what side of the body is
effected? The victim will show signs of numbness and weakness on the left
side.
6. What action should you take if a victim is having a seizure? You should hold the
victim firmly so they do not injure themselves.
7. After making sure the scene is safe, what two actions should you do or be prepared to do for a stroke victim? My first action would be to drive the victim to the hospital because treatments that decrease injury from a stroke and improve recovery must be given within the first few hours. Secondly, if the victim does not respond put the victim in the side position or recovery position to keep the airway open.
8. Name a medical condition that often causes seizures? Epilepsy is a medical condition that often causes seizures.
9. Name three other medical conditions besides epilepsy can cause a person to have a seizure? Three other conditions that can cause a seizure are drowning, heart disease, and emphysema.
10. What is a seizure? A seizure is uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain which may produce a physical convulsion, minor physical signs, thought disturbance, or a combination of the above.
11. What is the purpose for insulin in the body? Insulin controls the sugar in your body. Insulin in the body helps turn sugar into energy. It is made in the pancreas.
12. Is stroke one of the top five leading causes of death each year in the United States? Yes, stroke is the 5th leading cause of death in the United States.
13. When is shock most present in a victim? Shock is most present if the victim loses a lot of blood, has a severe heart attack, or has a bad allergic reaction.
14. What is the definition of shock? Shock develops when there is not enough blood
flowing to the cells of the body.
