Title: Cellular Respiration Lab
Title: Cellular Respiration Lab
Purpose: To measure the disposal of wastes from cellular respiration when affected by exercise.
Hypothesis: How will exercise affect your body’s production of carbon dioxide?_______________________________________
Materials: 1 small flask, 10-mL graduated cylinder, bromthymol blue solution, 2 straws, stop watch
Procedure:
1. Put 10mL of water in the flask and add 10 drops of bromthymol blue solution.
2. Your partner will time you during this step. When your partner says “go,” you will slowly blow air through a straw into the bottom of the flask. Carbon dioxide causes the bromthymol blue solution to turn yellow or green.
CAUTION: DO NOT INHALE THROUGH THE STRAW!!
3. When the solution changes color, your partner should say “stop,” and then record how long the color change took.
4. Rinse out your flask and repeat steps 1-3. This time jog in place for 1 minute before blowing into the straw and record the time for the color change.
5.Trade roles with your partner. Rinse out the flask and proceed to steps 1-4.
Observations: What were your observations? ____________
_________________________________________________
Questions:
1. How did exercise affect the time for the solution to change color? Did these results support your prediction?
2. What process in your body produces carbon dioxide? How does exercise affect this process?
Conclusion: (4-6 sentences) Restate your hypothesis. Was it correct or not? Was there any possible errors? What did you learn about the production of carbon dioxide with exercise?
