Speech Assignment - Mrs. Lichtman's Psychology 40S

Film Study

There have been many award winning feature films with a “psychological” theme. My personal favorite, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, won five Academy Awards and is considered one of Jack Nicholson’s best performances. Sadly, it’s a pretty accurate view of mental hospitals 40 years ago, but the characters are quite endearing. You viewed this film in class and were assigned a journal response: what amused, surprised, and disturbed you?

You will view one more feature film in class in June. Please select from a list of films which have proven to represent a specific disorder well. You will view the film chosen by the majority.

You have also been viewing a collection of documentary and educational films with case studies that depict the diagnosis and treatment of youth and adults with psychological disorders.

Your assignment is to view the characters in these films from a clinical perspective, looking at the manner in which their psychological disorder is represented. You are expected to take notes on various characters, looking to identify behaviors and adjustment problems that suggest a disorder. You must select ONE character and assume you have recently acquired them as a patient. Acting as their therapist, thoroughly complete a patient record, using the form provided or a more personalized version. If necessary information is not represented in the film, be creative and speculate (i.e. develop a treatment plan that would be appropriate). Attach the patient record for assessment:
