Paskohan sa Maco 2016-342900-5810254039235-533400-4832354959352ndLamdag FestivalMunicipality of MacoProvince of Compostela ValleyDecember 06 – 31, 2016“Paskong yano tinubdan sa tiunay nga pagtuo”The Theme: “Paskong yano tinubdan sa tiunay nga pagtuo”This year’s theme talks of two important elements: simplicity and faith. “Paskong yano tinubdan sa tiunay nga pagtuo” roughly translates to English as the simplicity of celebrating Christmas as an expression of pristine faith. This in consonance thrust and legacy of the Rimando leadership of continuing pragmatic and sustainable progress and development for the people of Maco. The theme calls us to look within and go back to core and true essence of Christmas, and to always remember our town’s humble beginnings. The celebration is anchored on the value of Christmas within rather than merely looking into the outward festivities. Background of the FestivalChristmas has been one of the pillars of the Christian faith. Maco as the home to a townspeople who freely practice their religion is composed of a vast number of Christians among Muslims, and Lumads. The annual Christmas Tree and Belen Competition has been an anticipated event, regardless of one’s religious beliefs or tribe, in Maco as conceptualized by the late Mr. Rodellio A. Bautista who was then the municipality’s dynamic and creative Municipal Tourism Officer. Since its installation, the competitions has not only inspired the creativity and resourcefulness of the townspeople but has also wowed travelers along the national highway traversing Tagum City and Davao Oriental. The annual competition has fostered a sense of ownership and participation among Macoe?os taking pride at being identified as a town of lights on Christmas Season. This in addition to the awe and inspiration it brings to anyone who gets to experience this festivity.Christmas VillageThe area outside ADECOR compound, the other side of the road corresponding to the location of Maco Heights Central Elementary School crossing to Panisa’s Batchoy Haus, will be the first Maco Christmas Village where all the Belen entries will be installed and a giant LGU Maco Christmas tree will be place amid all entries. The Christmas tree frame should be made of fabricated steel so as to ensure durability. The height may be 15-30 feet towering over all Christmas Tree and Belen entries. The LGU Chrismas Tree must be well-lighted with light bulbs in various Christmas themed colors. Furthermore, Christmas lights must be installed in the center island along the national highway where the street lights are in place must. Lights play a significant role in the festival as the word LAMDAG signifies light. Furthermore, Christmas is a season of hope that which LAMDAG more deeply implies.RationaleThe annual competition has been following the all-in-one format wherein an entry must comprise a Christmas Tree and a Belen. However, the organizers this year would like to encourage more participation from the townspeople. Ergo, instead of the lumping into one category, the Christmas Tree and Belen would become two separate independent entries. Furthermore, another category would be added for the Parol Competition. Having more than one category, it is further proposed that this annual activity be transformed into a festival, which will be known as LAMDAG FESTIVAL. The name is a Bisaya term for “light”, which literally describes the medium by which the competitions are anchored. Furthermore, LAMDAG refers to the Light, Jesus Christ the Messiah and Savior and the core reason for the celebration of Christmas among Christians. However, like the Kaimonan Festival, which may directly refer to the Mansaka tribe’s thanksgiving for a good harvest but is celebrated in Maco as the town’s thanksgiving for a bountiful year, Lamdag is not only a celebration among Christians. Turning the Christmas competition into a distinct Maco festival opens the celebration to all people - Christians, Muslims, and Lumads alike. Festival ObjectivesLamdag Festival is a celebration of FAITH, HOPE, and LOVE. It is anchored on celebrating the family owing to the Holy Family the joy and hope that the season brings. Furthermore, The objectives of this event are the following:To keep the spirit of Christmas alive and fervently felt among constituents and visitors in Maco, especially the children; To encourage creativity among the townspeople; To inspire resourcefulness among Macoe?os reminding everyone that Christmas decors may be created out of recyclable and indigenous materials; To bring people together from all walks of life as the activities and competitions are open to all bona fide residents of Maco;To provide a venue for art appreciation, entertainment and fun for the people of Maco and visitors alike; To promote the tourism industry of the town and thus, increase economic activity for local entrepreneurs.A Brief Introduction of the Major CategoriesChristmas Tree (Christmas sTREEt Category)The mounting of a Christmas tree during winter, though originally a pagan practice has become an accepted symbol for Christmas owing to what it represents: HOPE during the cold season when no living creature could be seen roaming around the snow-capped land, when all trees had been covered in white. The “tree” in those pre-Christian period were cut from the woods and placed inside the house so that families would still have a glimpse of the woods and be reminded that soon the cold would subside and they can all come into the woods to gather and hunt for food. Eventually, with the fervent hope of the missionaries to convert pagans into Christians, with the latter realizing that going against the traditions and customs of the pagan people would only make them reject the Christian teachings found a way to Christianize the winter tree – then it was called the Christmas Tree finding its meaning on the HOPE that the birth of Jesus Christ brought. To further connect the once pagan tree to the Christian tradition of Christmas, the “star” / comet that led the three Maggi has become a significant element of the Christmas Tree placed atop. The annual Christmas competitions aim at inspiring the townspeople and travelers traversing the national highway from Tagum on their way to Davao Oriental. It is further aimed at encouraging the townspeople of Maco to showcase their creativity and resourcefulness while making sure that the spirit of Christmas is alive in the hearts of Macoe?os. Instead of the Christmas Tree and Belen being placed adjacent to each other, the Christmas Tree and Belen competitions will become 2 separate categories. The Christmas Trees will be placed along the national highway as usual while the Belen entries will be stationed at one place (ADECOR, vacant lot fronting Gasoline Station to Popskoy). The area will be dubbed as Christmas Village where an LGU Christmas Tree will be placed at the center of the identified area while the competing Belens would be situated along the span of space identified. Furthermore, to encourage tourism and economic activity, it is proposed that an area within the Christmas Village would be set aside for local entrepreneurs can sell local delicacies and snacks, even souvenirs for spectators. With this, there will be a specific area where we can consider to be the center of the celebrations where people can stay for a while, hangout with their friends and have their refreshments while waiting for their turn in having their pictures taken. With this set-up, more townspeople can join in the competitions and more tourists will be drawn to our municipality boosting economic activity through tourism.BelenThe Belen/Manger is a timeless symbol of Christmas depicting the Holy Family on the first Christmas eve. The Belen is constant reminder of the value of family and of staying together despite the odds. Elements of the BelenJoseph, the Blessed Virgin Mary’s husband is a symbol of the sense of responsibility, fortitude, and faith – an epitome of what a husband and a father should be. He is a figure of selfless love and unfailing faith knowing that the Child Jesus was not his own but borne of the Holy Spirit. He believed even if he could hardly understand given his limited human capacity to understand God’s glory. He stayed beside Mary and the child in the face of doubts for faith is stronger when tested by doubts.Mary, the Blessed Virgin Mother of the child Jesus is the embodiment of faith. Without words of doubts she obliged to the will of the Father made known through the Archangel Gabriel, the Heavenly Messenger. She is a figure of what a woman, a wife, a mother should be – a woman of modest beauty with the fortitude of a thousand men protecting and keeping the yet to be born child. The Infant Jesus, the core of the Christian faith as the only Way to Redemption and Salvation is a living reminder that life is a gift and for every infant born, hope is born with him. In this trying times when humanity is torn between valuing choice over life, as pro-choice and pro-life debates never come to a resolution, the Holy Infant is the MESSAGE, the enlightenment that humanity needs; the LAMDAG – that every child has the essential, beyond-debate right to be born. The Belen or the Nativity scene would be complete with the presence of all of God’s creation. The shepherds, with their animals remind us of our role in the world – stewards of God’s creation, born to worship the Lord our God through living our lives as He commands us. The Maggi are the figures that remind us that even the world’s kings and wisest of men would come to worship the Author of it all.In a nutshell, the Belen is a symbol of FAITH, HOPE and LOVE and in all the pre-requisite of all three virtues, HUMILITY. Even the message of the KING born in a manger is humility and simplicity, the fertile ground on which the seeds of unfailing faith, unshaken hope, and unconditional love can thrive and grow.Parol/Christmas LanternThe Parol, as mentioned above, symbolizes the star/comet that guided everyone to the Nativity/Belen. Its light and tail pointed to where the Messiah was born and has since been considered by Christians as an element of the Nativity.A Capella Chorale CompetitionsThe spirit of Christmas has become marked by festivity as heaven and earth rejoices for the birth of the Christian faith’s Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Choirs of Angels sing songs of joy and praises to the newborn King. This year, as part of the 2nd Lamdag Festival of the town it is only fitting to include a chorale competition that would further enrich the experience of Pasko sa Maco. The said competition will be in two categories, Children and Open Categories.
