SUGGESTED ELECTRIC EQUIVALENT FOR A 40 SIZE I/C POWER PLANT

The following information is thanks to Keith Renecle who has been using this equivalent power plant for some time so it actually works. If this is your first foray into Electric power please follow these notes so you can build up an understanding of Electric Power systems before you change any of the suggestions below. I repeat this set up works.

The Renecle bits:

E-Max BL2820/07 electric motor.

Hobbywing 40 Amp ESC.

Turnigy 2200mAh - 25C – 4S LiPo.

KR Governor/Timer.

KR Switch harness.

KR programmer.

Programming device for the ESC.

11 x 5.5 E or EP propeller [tractor or pusher, what you fancy].

These items can be purchased freely on the internet but just by changing manufacturer, but NOT the specification, can be purchased from two suppliers in the UK - cheaper postage charges.

Notes:-

With the exception of the two programmers, these are the bits that fit in the model, you will also need a good Battery Charger that charges and balances the batteries along with some form of battery analyser to check the state of the individual battery cells, preferably including a Watt Meter to check the power consumption of your complete system. These items represent a reasonably priced system with a good performance and light weight.

Assuming a 45oz model and using 10Watt/oz we will need a 450Watts capability, well within the 2820/07’s capacity of 991W.

Max rpm is 919kV x 0.85 x 14.8V = 11561 rpm. An 11 x 5.5E prop needs approx 9500 – 9700, well within the 2820/07’s capability, with some to spare for the governor!

The KR Governor/Timer allows adjustment of max rpm, seven steps of governor rpm, flight timer, overload timer cut out [prop ground strike or low volts].

All the above assumes 85% efficiency for the mechanicals and 20% oversize for the battery.

The weight of Motor, prop, Esc, Timer and Battery plus connectors is approximately equal to most current 35 – 40 IC power systems with the bonus of the heaviest part, the Battery, being behind the Motor!
