Company K - Tombstone in Springbanks Cemetery says Co K b 1835 d 1871 but also that possible death date 2/28/71 Congestion Lungs, Yellowbud, Ross 47 y from County Probate Records – disagrees with roster age. Residence not listed, 27 yrs old enlisted on 8/7/1862 as Private and on 8/26/1862 mustered into K co 89th infantry– this jives with James at 17-A above. Perhaps same James. In addition, since Francis was a musician, muster roll summaries for 29 Feb 64 and 30 Jun 64, mention 1 musician present for duty. He was the only musician in the company. So it is a mystery where or when he was captured except that it took place after 1 Aug 64. - Hope this helps, - Lee 5-11-2008 email one

Ray, I have the complete set of books that contain the Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the Civil War. The 89th is in Vol. 7 and in Company K or for that matter in the entire regiment only one James Shasteen listed. Also the muster rolls in the Ohio Historical Center support there only being one James. As far as the timing between leaving the regiment and transferring into the VRC, I think that is in line with other cases. It seems common to allow for time so the soldier can have a chance to recover sufficiently to be returned to his regiment. When that proved no longer possible, then if at all able for some sort of duty, they were put in the VRC. So I believe there is only one James, but don’t know enough to comment on the initial or the difference in birth/death dates. There was a James A Shasteen that was 18 when enlisting, but that was later in the war and with Co G, 163rd, 12 May to 10 Sep 64, and Co B, 184th, 11 Feb to 20 Sep 65. You should go to the National Archives in Wash DC and plan on spending several days there. You can search pension records, military records, carded medical records, muster rolls, and much more. Good luck on your search, Lee 5-11-2008 email two
