ART 3361 Elementary Lesson Plan

Lesson Title/Unit: Stained Glass Windows

Grade Level: 4th grade

Overview: The students will first be introduced to the history of stained glass windows and shown a picture of The North Rose Window of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. After this we will tell the class some interesting facts about stained glass windows. These facts include the following:

1) In what types of places do you most often see stained glass windows?

2) How does the stained glass artist cut the glass to the correct size?

3) How does the stained glass artist create the fine details, like the angel’s face, that are too small for individual pieces of glass?

We will show an example of a stained glass window that we made. Then the student will be given the opportunity to make a stained glass window.

Objectives/The Learner Will:

Art

COS # 4.3- Interpret the lives and times of artists from the content of their artwork.

COS # 4.6- Define selected visual art vocabulary.

COS # 4.33- Use the elements of art and principles of design to create a work of art.

COS # 4.38- Produce art using different two-dimensional media and processes.

Math

COS #4.42- Recognize, describe, compare, and discuss a variety of geometric figures given models, pictures, and drawings.

COS #4.44- Identify geometric representations.

COS #4.46- Determine lines of symmetry.

Materials/Resources:

Artworks/Exemplars: The North Rose Window of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris

Media/Tools:

tissue paper

construction paper

scissors

contact paper

Procedures:

To insure that learners have a purpose, we will ask the student the following question:

1. Do you know what a stained glass window is?

2. Where do you find stained glass window?

Next we will talk also with history of stained glass windows.

To insure that learners have direction we will:

1) We will show our stained glass windows.

2) We will pass out the materials (except contact paper).

3) We will ask them to make the border of stained glass windows.

4) Then they will cut and arrange the tissue paper inside the border on the table.

5) When they are ready, we will pass out contact paper and help them transfer their design onto the contact paper.

To insure that learners have active awareness, we will ask a question related to the lesson:

1) Can anyone to tell us something they have learned today. (Closure to the lesson)

Modifications:

The student with special need will be paired with another students, so that they can participate in the assignment.

Assessment: The students will be evaluated on the form attached.
