Name of the Game: Math Man Equivalent Fractions

Purpose: Recognizing Equivalent Fractions

Grade Level: 4TH Grade

(3) Number and Operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent and generate fractions to solve problems. The student is expected to:

(C) determine if two given fractions are equivalent using a variety of methods, including multiplying by a fraction equivalent to one, or simplifying a fraction to lowest terms;

Length of time necessary for game or activity: 15-20 minutes

Number of Participants: 1-2 students

Procedure:

This game is based on the Pac-man arcade game. Its aim is to allow students to practice recognition of equivalent fractions.

The object of the game is to identify, chase, and gobble up the ghost that carries a fraction equivalent to the one posted at the bottom of the screen.

Just like in the arcade game, you control your character’s movement along the screen’s passageways using the keyboard’s up, down, left, and right arrow keys as you chase down the ghost with the equivalent fraction while trying to evade those that carry non-equivalent ones. You move up levels of increasing challenge, although the game remains basically the same from level to level. There doesn’t appear to be an “ultimate” goal; it is simple a “drill” type of game.

It does offer a mini-lesson on equivalent fractions as well as a practice mode where the ghosts remain stationary.
