Lesson Scenario

As a class we will read ‘How Long or How Wide? : A Measuring Guide.’ Students will share what units of measurement they are familiar with and

what new units of measurement were mentioned in the book. The instructor will define different methods of measurement: length, weight, volume,

time while visually listing these on the board. The instructor will prompt students to name large and small units of measurement in each

category also listing these on the board.

The instructor will introduce Metric System prefixes and their meanings.

Students will learn that length can be measured in kilometers, meters and centimeters using the Metric System. 1 kilometer equals 1000 meters.

1 meter equals 100 centimeters. Students will learn that in the English System we measure length using yards, feet, and inches. 1 yard is

equivalent to 3 feet or 36 inches. 1 foot is equivalent to 12 inches.

Students will learn that weight is measured metrically in kilograms and grams. 1 kilogram equals 1000 grams. Students will recall that in the

English System we use pounds and ounces. 1 pound equals about 16 ounces.

Students will learn that volume is measured using liters and milliliters in the Metric System. 1 liter is equivalent to 1000 milliliters.

Students will recall that the volume is measured in the English System with gallons, pints, quarts, and cups. Instructor will present “Gallon

Man” illustration. 1 gallon is equivalent to 4 pints, 8 quarts, or 16 cups. 1 pint is equivalent to 2 quarts. 1 quart is equivalent to 4 cups.

Students will recall that time is measured in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. 1 day equals 24 hours. 1 hour equals 60 minutes. 1 minute

equals 60 seconds.

For students to apply what they have learned about measurements and conversions, they will be directed to use the web tool Popplet to create a

two-column conversion chart. Each student should list at least 12 “large” units of measurement in the left column and corresponding “smaller”

units of measurement in the right column. Students will be encouraged to use pictures or drawings in their Popplet to illustrate concepts of

measurement.
