By using this app it will introduce some of the concepts that they will need to know.Sequence of Activities:Anticipatory Questions/Activity:Ask the students what they already know about grammar. Teacher will write one sentence on the board and one incomplete sentence. See if the students know which one is a sentence and which one is not.Body of Lesson Plan: Make sure that all the students have downloaded the iTooch: 5th grade language arts app, the free version.Students will be learning four types of sentences, and subjects and predicates. First I will introduce the four types of sentences to the studentsTeacher: a sentence is one or more words that expresses a thought and starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark. What are punctuation marks?Student: period, question mark or an exclamation mark.Teacher: right.Now give the students the handout of the four types of sentencesDeclarativeA Declarative sentence makes a statement or declares something.Ex. The month of February is the coldest month of the year. This sentence states a fact about the weather.InterrogativeAn Interrogative sentence asks something, and it will always end in a question mark.Ex. What did you eat for lunch? The sentence asks a question.ImperativeAn Imperative sentence demands or requests something.Ex. Take your food tray the cafeteria. The sentence gives an order, or requests something. ExclamatoryAn Exclamatory sentence expresses sudden or strong feelings and it will always end in an exclamatory point.Ex. I love you so much! This expresses strong feelings and ends with the exclamatory point.Go over each category with the students and write examples on the board for each and have the students engage by coming up with sentences as well.Now possibly on a different day the teacher will go over subject and predicates with the class.Teacher: what is a subject class?Student: the main thing, what something is aboutTeacher: right your almost there. A subject tells you who or what the sentence is about.Ex. Sussie is going to school. What is the subject?Student: SussieTeacher: yes! Now does anyone know what a predicate isClass: silenceTeacher: that’s ok a predicate gives more information about the subject, so in this sentence “Sussie is going to school” the predicate of the sentence would be “…is going” because it tells the reader where Sussie is going.Another example would be “the water is cold” can someone point out the subject?Student: water Teacher Yes! Now can someone point out the predicate of the sentence, what part of this sentence tells you more information about the waterStudent: “…cold”Teacher: correct because as the reader now we know that the water is what? Cold.Now give the students the handout on predicates.Show the students the different feature on the iTooch app. If students come across an answer they don’t know they have the option to look back on the material that I've taught in class on the app. When students complete levels and level up by getting most of the answers correct, then they receive prizes. The iTooch app will help the students better understand these grammar concepts that have been discussed in class. This grammar lesson will help them become more descriptive in their writing especially for their “Holes” writing assignment. Conclusion Students will work on the iTooch app.Lesson Differentiations:Simplifications:There isn’t an iTooch app for fourth grade language arts but there is one for third grade, so if the fifth grade app is too complex I will go down to the third grade. But the fifth and fourth grade have been intergraded into the app they are using, and is suggested to start at the fourth grade level.Extensions:Students have a “four types of sentences” worksheet to take home, that will be reviewed in class the following day. Assessment Piece:The homework that is taken home will be evaluated to ensure students understand the concept.
