[pic] Keeping up with students notebooks:

Students will have two notebooks that they are to keep in class to work in; a writing journal and a reading journal.

Students will be free writing and responding to writing prompts throughout the year and I will be commenting in their journals on their responses. Journals will be counted as class work and part of their learning portfolio.

Thank you for the opportunity to teach and instill the love of learning with your child. Together, we can accomplish anything.

Please feel free to contact me at school at 336-703-4122, or email me at emcorlett@wsfcs.k12.nc.us

Our team planning time is at 2:30 pm and I check my email during this time.

Homework: [pic]

* I can not stress the importance of homework. Because we all read at different paces, some students may find that they need to read at home in order to remain caught up. Personally, I love to find a quiet comfortable place, grab a glass of chocolate milk and read. Please encourage your child to complete homework assignments. Should your child take longer than 45 minutes to complete their homework, kindly let me know.

• Homework will include reading, vocabulary, and math. Please expect homework every night (except Friday). 3rd grade students should plan to read for 20 or more minutes a night and write a summary in their reading log. 4th grade students should plan to read for 25-30 or more minutes and write a summary in their reading log.

• Students will be taught to be responsible for writing their homework down in their agenda. Please look for your child’s homework daily. I will also post all homework on my webpage, as well as, in the homework archive. Please sign your child’s agenda when their homework is complete.

• Reading will be done with a variety of texts and short stories. We will be reading non-fiction, fiction, and class novels. In addition, students will be in book clubs and literature circles throughout the year, sharing lesson objectives. We will have our media orientation next week and students will be able to check out books to read nightly in order to meet their book club goals. In addition to the media center, I have a wonderful class collection of various level AR books the students can choose from.

• Writing for both 3rd and 4th grade will be an on-going process throughout the year. We have three types of writing that will be of emphasis (opinion, informative/explanatory, narrative) as I prepare your child for 4th and 5th grade. Please do not panic, I will keep you well informed as the year progresses.

• Vocabulary will generally come from the 3rd and 4th grade phonics curriculum content, high frequency words for that specific grade, or from the novel we are reading. Quizzes are given on Friday. Students will have opportunities during the week to practice but I encourage you to help them review at home.

Make-up Work:

The school policy for make-up work will be followed. Explanations of this policy can be found in the student planner and the parent handbook. Students will be given the work they missed when they return to school. I will certainly explain and help those who need assistance understanding the work that was missed. Please know my web page will also provide you with a monthly newsletter about what we are learning in class, homework (homework archive), templates, and helpful websites. You can access my webpage by going to wsfcs.k12.nc.us – choose Piney Grove Elementary School, click on faculty and scroll down to Corlett.

FOOD AND FUN [pic]

• Students may bring ONE healthy snack to be eaten each morning if they choose. Please make sure the snack is NOT candy and isn’t so messy that they can’t work while they eat.

• Students may keep a bottle CONTAINING ONLY PLAIN WATER on their desk as long as it does not spill easily and is taken home at the end of each day to be washed and refilled.

• If you will be applying for free or reduced lunch, please do so as soon as possible, as there is a deadline.

• Treats may be brought in for a student’s birthday to be shared at lunch. Due to a school rule, treats must be store bought.

• Optional: Students will be scheduled to bring in a healthy snack once during the school year. Please look for this schedule in the coming days.

DONATIONS

• If you are interested in sending in items for our classroom, we could use small prizes, packaged snacks, and candy for rewards. Sanitary wipes, tissues, pencils, notebook paper are also always in high demand. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

VOLUNTEERS

• If you are interested in volunteering in any way, please let us know. Sign-up sheets are available. We can use help with anything from tutoring, Friday Folders, paperwork, book binding, to just an extra set of hands. The class can receive so many benefits when parents donate their time, even if it’s on an occasional basis. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Positive Actions: “I will give my best every day!” [pic]

Students will be involved in creating the “We Will” class by-laws, as well as, continue to follow Piney Grove School’s expectations of PAWS. I believe when a child has a say in their learning environment, they live by it. Positive actions, such as, showing acts of kindness, leadership, and outstanding effort, will be rewarded through various means (5 points on a quiz bonus coupons, sit with a friend from another class at lunch, enjoy reading time in the ‘tub’, and mystery fun envelopes to mention a few). When a student makes a choice that needs to be addressed (after two verbal discussions), he/she will reflect by completing a refocus activity (reflecting in the Choice Book). Should additional concerns arise, please know I will contact you that day so we may talk.

The acronym TEAM (Together, Everyone, All of us, Me is not an option) will also be practiced.
