Additional Comments:

Parents,

Your child has an Independent Study Project (I.S.P.) due in the academically gifted program. The project allows your child to teach us about a topic. I have observed nearly four hundred Independent Study Projects; however, each year I see new things and receive fabulous ideas from students and parents.

This is a HUGE project. However, I have students in high school and college who stated that the presentations have helped them with their presentation style, public speaking skills, writing skills, research skills, and “ways to keep the audience’s attention”. Students have lots of flexibility and ways to express their creativity with this project. They can teach us about a wide-variety of things that interest them.

We work on the project at least thirty minutes each week in the gifted program. The research component will begin the week of September 29th. The students will have a “contract” and a checklist this year to remember their commitment to the project and keep track of their progress. Some students and parents want to do all of the work at home while others want nearly all of the work accomplished at school. I am flexible; however, I need to know the plan you have with your child.

The I.S.P.’s will be due from December 1st thru mid-March; however, I encourage students not to procrastinate if they are participating in the Science Fair. Parents are always invited to the classroom for their child’s presentation.

If you have any questions or concerns after reading the rubric, please let me know. Feel free to e-mail me at talley@minford.k12.oh.us or call me at 820-2181 before 8am or after 2pm, or write me a note. I look forward to the pleasure of teaching your child during another school year. (

Sincerely,

Dr. Tracy Alley

Teacher/Coordinator of Gifted Programs k-12

I realize my child has an I.S.P. due between the months of December and March. I have read the rubric with my child, and I know the topic of my child’s presentation for school year 2003-2004. I understand my child cannot withdraw from the gifted program after December 1st until they complete their I.S.P. in the gifted program.

What would you like your child to work on at school? (We can do most everything except some of the “optional activities” at school.) Your child will need to visit the public library since our resources are sometimes limited.

I have read the rubric with my teacher and signed the contract. I am committed to the Independent Study Project of _______________________________.
