Calculating Your Needs

To calculate the correct amount of fill necessary for an area, you must multiply its length (L) * width (W) * height (H). If your height is measured in inches, it will be easier to convert your height into feet, so it is the same as your length and width. Then, when you multiply L * W * H your answer will be in cubic yards. In this case, you will divide your answer by 27 to determine how many yards you will need. Round your answer UP to the nearest yard. This way, you’ll be sure to have enough material. Remember, some settling will occur in the first few months.

|1” = 0.083’ |7” = 0.58’ |13” = 1.08’ |

|2” = 0.17’ |8” = 0.67’ |14” = 1.17’ |

|3” = 0.25’ |9” = 0.75’ |15” = 1.25’ |

|4” = 0.33’ |10” = 0.83’ |16” = 1.33’ |

|5” = 0.42’ |11” = 0.92’ |17” = 1.42’ |

|6” = 0.5’ |12” = 1’ |18” = 1.5’ |

For Example:

Your area is 30 feet long by 10 feet wide

by 6 inches high

1. Convert inches to feet:

6 inches – 6 / 12 = 0.5 feet

2. Find area:

30*10*0.5 = 150 cubic feet

3. Determine yards:

150 / 27= 5.56 cubic yards (rounded up to 6 cubic yards)
