III. Sportsman Division

A. Bridgeport Sportsman Engine Specs:

1. Stock 350 cubic inch Chevrolet V8.

2. Bow Tie or Aftermarket standard deck height* cast iron blocks allowed. (* 9.020 base deck height. milling for deck clearance is allowed)

3. Stock bore and stroke combination only, (i.e. 350 C.I. = 4” bore x 3.480” stroke). Engines may be bored a maximum of .060” over (.065 will be allowed for wear), maximum 360 cubic inches.

4. No Compression Limit in place.

5. Cylinder Heads:

a. Stock Chevrolet cast iron production* heads only, no aluminum, Bowtie, Vortec Bowtie, or angle plug heads allowed, no porting or hand grinding will be allowed. (*Production is defined as: Original equipment on a production line vehicle from GM)

b. Intake Valves, 2.020”

c. Exhaust Valves, 1.600”

1. Intake and exhaust valves must be one-piece solid steel or stainless steel only. Minimum valve stem will be 11/32”. No hollow, sodium filled, or titanium valves allowed.

2. Valve Springs must be Steel only, NO TITANIUM SPRINGS.

d. Screw in rocker studs and guide plates may be used.

e. World Products #4360 and #4361 heads are also legal.

f. The Pro Topline 906 Vortec replacement head (part # 2236494906) will be allowed. No modifications of any type will be permitted, with the exception of a multi-angle valve job. Bridgeport head gauges will be used to check these heads.

6. Camshafts:

a. Only flat tappet hydraulic or solid lifter camshafts will be allowed. No Stellite or hard-faced camshafts.

1. No roller or mushroom lifters permitted.

2. No “ceramic” or composite type lifters.

3. Lifters must maintain stock Chevy diameter (.842).

4. No roller cam bearings.

b. Stock type timing chain and gears. No gear or belt drives allowed.

c. Rocker arms must be stud mounted. No Shaft or pedestal type rockers allowed. Rocker arm ratio is no longer restricted to 1.5. (any ratio is allowed)

7. Crankshafts:

a. Stock Chevrolet, no modifications may be drilled for balancing, no polishing or lightening.

1. Any weight removed from the crankshaft must be for balancing purposes only. No “smooth” balancing.

2. Main journal size must remain stock for the block used (i.e. 350 C.I. will be 2.45”). Minimum rod journal size for any motor will be 2.00”.

b. The original factory casting number must remain on the crankshaft.

c. Scat or Eagle aftermarket replacements cranks permitted. Above listed rules apply.

8. Connecting Rods:

a. Stock Chevrolet 5.7” long only, no polishing.

b. After market forged rods, stock appearing. (No H-beam or billet rods allowed). Chevrolet large or small journal rods only.

9. Pistons:

a. Flat top pistons or dish pistons only. NO DOME PISTONS. Racing pistons are allowed.

10. Lubrication System:

a. No dry sumps allowed, no accu sumps allowed.

b. No external oil pumps allowed.

c. Oil must be in a steel pan.

11. Carburetor:

a. Holley 4412, 500cfm, 2 barrel only. Must be box stock as manufactured. Choke plate and shaft must be removed. Box stock only.

b. Jets may be changed as needed.

c. K & N or Moroso flow controlled air cleaners permitted.

d. Conventional round type air cleaners only.

12. Intake Manifolds:

a. Any aluminum intake manifold. (Box stock as cast and commercially available)

13. Fuel Pump:

a. Fuel pump must be stock type only and be driven as stock only.

b. No electric or belt driven fuel pumps allowed.

14. Water Pump:

a. Aluminum or cast iron, belt driven only.

15. Ignition System:

a. Stock OEM distributors. (MSD PERMITTED)

b. Anything that will fit inside stock HEI distributor and cap.

1. This rule applies to the module and coil only. It does not permit the use of traction control or any other ignition or timing altering devices. System must be inductive-discharge type.

c. External MSD type units not permitted.

1. No external ignition components are permitted.

16. Headers:

a. Any type header allowed, except for 180-degree headers.

17. No other speed equipment of any kind allowed.

Body and Chassis Requirements

18. Body Requirement:

a. “DIRT” style, old or new.

b. Pennsylvania 358 bodies, etc. are allowed.

c. No sail panels, wings, etc. allowed.

19. Number Requirement:

a. Single, double or triple digit numbers only.

b. All numbers must be a minimum of 18” high on the doors and roof, 8” high for the rear deck.

c. No letters allowed.

d. No duplicate numbers allowed.

e. Numbers must be pre-registered with Bridgeport Speedway.

20. Muffler Requirement:

a. All cars must run satisfactory noise dampening mufflers for all Bridgeport Speedway events.

21. Fuel Requirement:

a. Gasoline only

b. No nitrous or any other additives are allowed. All cars are subject to random testing.

c. Any car found with illegal fuel will be subject to a fine and/or disqualification.

22. Fuel Tank Requirement:

a. Fuel cells with rubber bladders and factory steel container required.

b. See section I, B-2 on page one.

23. Weight Requirement:

a. Minimum weight 2500 lbs. for all sportsman cars. (no 2%)

b. All weights include driver and will be determined at the end of the race. Cars not making weight are subject to a fine and/or disqualification.

24. Track Tire Requirement:

a. The specified Bridgeport Speedway track tire must be used in the size and compound specified.

25. Wheel Requirement:

a. One-piece, steel wheels only.

b. Bead locks allowed.

c. 14” maximum width allowed.

26. Transmission Requirement:

a. Approved American manufactured 3-speed transmissions allowed.

b. Approved American manufactured 4-speed transmissions with 3rd gear locked out allowed.

c. Modified style transmission allowed.

d. No automatic transmissions allowed.

e. No overdrive or underdrive transmissions allowed.

f. No “quick-change” style transmissions allowed.

27. Rear End Requirement:

a. Conventional quick-change type rear end only.

b. No open tube (live axle type) allowed.

c. No lockers or 2-speed type allowed.

28. Inspection Policy:

a. Bridgeport Speedway management and technical staff retain the right to inspect any and all components at anytime. This includes the right to tear down any engine, sealed or unsealed if we feel there is just cause.

b. Any competitor failing to comply with the above rule will be subject to a fine and/or disqualification and suspension.

B. Miscellaneous Interpretations:

1. The idea behind this division is to keep the engine as stock as possible in order to hold expenses down. While the above rules offer a good outline, every item cannot be covered by a written rule. Before using any component not covered in the above rules, ask first.

2. Any and all decisions of the technical inspector are final. Any car that departs from the reality of the intention of this division will be subject to a fine and/or disqualification or suspension. The Bridgeport Speedway management reserves the right to reject any and all entries.

3. Please read the above rules and the 2005 “DIRT” rulebook, where it applies, very carefully. Keep in mind this is a low cost division and it is up to everyone to keep it that way.

C. Special Notes:

1. All Bridgeport Sportsman engines MUST be sealed by our Tech Inspector. The cost is $75.00, payable to the Tech Inspector at the time of the sealing. Shop visits to seal engines are to be within 50 miles of Bridgeport Speedway or extra fees will apply. Scheduling can be done by calling the Speedway office at (856) 467-4408 during business hours. Any Sportsman winning a feature with an engine that is not sealed WILL BE torn down immediately after the race. If the winning car is disqualified, any car awarded first place will be torn down if it’s engine is not sealed. Bridgeport Speedway management reserves the right to inspect, whistle or pump any competitor’s engine at any time during an event.

DIRT LEGAL

SPORTSMAN MOTOR SPECIFICATION

1. Blocks

a. Block and all internal parts must meet stock specifications for its make

b. GM Bow-Tie, Dart blocks permitted, no other performance types allowed.

1. Cylinder Heads

a. Cast iron OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) stock heads permitted (must pass ball test and be produced by Chevy, Chrysler, or Ford with part and casting numbers approved by DIRT are eligible to run.

b. Chevy Bow-tie, Chrysler W-2, and Ford performance heads are all permitted providing they meet the rules and not fall in to the category of unfair competition.

c. DART 180CC Iron Eagle heads allowed

d. The Chevy Vortec, Chevy Vortec Bowtie, and the Ford GT 40 are NOT permitted.

e. Cylinder heads must be from the same manufacturer as the engine block.

f. Sand blasting, bead blasting, acid-dipping, porting, polishing, and welding are prohibited.

g. Milling or angle milling of the cylinder head to any amount is allowed.

h. No epoxy or coating of head is allowed.

i. No relieving or unshrouding of valves in the combustion chamber.

j. Valve head sizes are optional providing they maintain stock OEM positioning in valve guides (distance apart and angles).

k. Valve guide liners are allowed.

l. Valve material must be one-piece solid steel or stainless steel, no titanium, or sodium filled valves allowed.

m. The only titanium allowed in these engine valves is the valve spring retainers.

n. Any carbon fiber parts engine are illegal.

o. Any amount of valve seats per cylinder head may be installed of the purpose of repairing a head.

p. Any angle valve job will be permitted as long as it is done on a machine that cuts concentric guide center.

q. Valve stem maximum and minimum diameter, plus or minus 005” must be as follows: Chevy 11/32”, Ford 11/32”, Chrysler 11/32”.

r. No hand grinding, sanding, blending, or de-burring where a cutter or stone leaves off.

THIS IS A NON-PORTED CLASS. Inspection will be conducted with the head on the engine but the method of checking may require the removal of the intake and exhaust manifolds. Heads will be removed only to surrender to officials for appeal. The method of checking the legality of heads will include a visual inspection for grinding and polishing plus the use of the following gauges:

❖ A go/no-go gauge will be used to determine the height of the intake port, gauges are available for Ford, Chevy, and Chrysler.

❖ A go/no-go gauge will be used to determine the height and width of the exhaust port, gauges are available for Chevy, Ford, and Chrysler

❖ A go/no-go intake runner ball will be used to determine the dimension of the intake runner, gauges are available for Ford, Chevy, and Chrysler

❖ An exhaust valve seat ball consisting of a .531” diameter ball bearing welded to a ¼” flexible shaft will be used. With the valve fully opened, the ball will be placed against the valve stem and moved in a full circle (360 degrees) around the valve stem. If the ball drops down through the valve seat in any position around the full circle of the valve stem, it will be deemed illegal.

❖ An intake valve seat ball using the same procedure as described for the exhaust side will also be used, except the ball size will be .787”

NOTE: This method of checking the head will hold true with a hot or cold engine. No extra time will be given for the engine to cool off.

SPECIAL NOTE: Anybody found to be illegal in any way in the cylinder head area will result in complete disqualification, losing all moneys and points for the night.

2. Crankshaft

a. Any steel or cast iron crankshaft is permitted providing it maintains stock stroke as manufactured for block.

b. No holes drilled in rod or main journals.

c. Minimum rod and main journal must be either Chevy, Ford, or Chrysler specs

d. Minimum rod journal is 2.100”

e. Knife-edging, narrowing, or cutting down the diameter of the crankshaft is not permitted.

f. No polishing of the crank

3. Rods

a. OEM stock production or aftermarket solid steel rods are permitted. NO titanium, aluminum, or billet

b. Rods may not be polished

c. Rod lengths must be OEM specs for block used

Ex. Chevy is 5.7”, Chrysler is 6.125”, Ford is 5.956”

4. Pistons

a. Any brand 3 ring flat top aluminum pistons only. No coating of any kind is permitted

5. Vibration Dampeners

a. Any steel or cast iron, stock OEM vibration dampener is permitted provided there is no machining or alteration in any way.

b. NO fluid or friction dampeners are permitted.

6. Camshaft

a. Any make hydraulic or flat topped permitted

b. No roller cams, roller gear driven cams, mushroom lifters, or lash caps are allowed.

c. Shaft rockers and stud girdles are not permitted.

d. Engines with stock OEM shaft rockers permitted

e. Roller rockers with optional ratios are permitted

f. Lifters MUST maintain stock OEM diameters

g. Lifter bores must remain in stock OEM positions and angles, but may be re-bushed for wear.

h. A flat steel lifter galley plate may be used to prevent engine damage in case of push rod failure.

7. Intake Manifold

a. Must be a stock passenger car, cast iron 2-barrel intake manifold only.

b. No porting, polishing, welding, matching, or acid dipping is permitted.

c. Optional aluminum four barrel as cast box, spec manifold may be used.

1) No work of ANY kind may be done on this optional manifold.

d. Manufacturer for Chevy is Brodix part #HV1011, Chrysler 340 heads is Edelbrock part number 2195, Chrysler W-2 head is Edelbrock part number 2920, and the Ford 351 Windsor is Edelbrock part number 2981.

8. Carburetor

a. Any American stock OEM 2 barrel carburetor up to 1-11/16” throttle bore with no adapter plate is legal on cast iron manifolds.

b. The Holley carburetor, part #4412 is acceptable and must run a maximum spacer adapter of 1 1/16” including gaskets.

c. No modifications of any kind will be allowed to these carburetors except those listed below (box stock only).

d. Conventional round type air cleaners only

e. Air cleaners that provide ventilation through the top cover (such as K &N brand) are permitted.

f. No air induction plastic carburetor inserts or other devices to direct air into intake.

g. No air diffusers are permitted.

CARBURETOR MODIFICATIONS ALLOWED ARE LISTED BELOW; ANY OTHER MODIFICATION NOT MENTIONED IS NOT LEGAL:

❖ Holes drilled in the throttle plates for proper idling

❖ Drilling, tapping and plugging of unused vacuum ports

❖ Welding of throttle shaft to linkage arm

❖ Drilling of idle or high speed air correction jets

❖ Milling of center carburetor body metering block surface a maximum of .015” on each side

❖ Removal of choke plate and shaft

❖ The jets may be changed as needed

9. IGNITION

a. Stock OEM distributors and coils only (MSD HEI permitted)

b. No trigger ignition systems permitted

c. No Mallory, Accel, or MSD boxes may be used.

d. On HEI ignition systems, coils must remain in distributor if stock OEM

1) ALL HEI distributors must remain as manufactured

e. On point type distributors, coils must be stock

f. With ANY system used, only one coil will be permitted on the car.

g. Only one 12-volt battery permitted.

10. LUBRICATION SYSTEM

a. No dry sump system permitted

b. Oil must be in steel pan only

c. Oil pan must have a ¾” inspection hole for connecting rod verification on left side of pan.

d. NO external oil pumps or Accu-sumps permitted.

e. Oil coolers will be permitted providing they are mounted under the left wing or under the hood only.

11. WATER PUMPS

a. May be cast iron or aluminum

b. Radiator fan must be steel only, no electric cooling fans or pumps permitted.

12. FUEL PUMPS

a. Must remain in and be driven as stock OEM equipment, no electric fuel pumps permitted

13. FUEL

a. NO nitrous or ANY other fuel additives are permitted

b. ALL fuels are subject to random testing

14. WEIGHT

a. MUST be a minimum of 2500 pounds. (no 2%)

15. TIRES

a. MUST race track tires

16. UPDATES

a. Rule changes in the 2004/2005 DIRT Rulebook will apply.

b. Chassis adjusters will be permitted on DIRT Sportsman cars at Bridgeport Speedway in 2005.
