Kyotango

Tokyo

Kyoto Osaka

Welcome to Kyotango.

Kyotango is located in the northern part of Kyoto Prefecture. It is a place where beautiful nature, eternal history and a rich culture are still alive. The sandy beaches and impressive oddly shaped rocks you see along the coast make you realize the grandeur of nature. In the areas covered with forests and mountains, you can enjoy hiking, and camping. Enjoy traveling around Kyotango, a place with charms different from Kyoto City, where the old capital was located for over a thousand years.

San'in Kaigan Geopark

A "Geopark" is a type of natural park; here you can learn about the scientifically important and beautiful geoheritage along with the culture and history of the people who live there. The "San'in Kaigan Geopark", that stretches from Kyotango City to Tottori City, is a member of the Global Geoparks Network, an official program of UNESCO.

Tango Chirimen (Silk Crepe)

This is a type of silk fabric with a beautiful glossy look and fine waffle texture called "shibo." Since it originated in Kyotango in 1720 during the Edo Period, it has taken root as a local industry that continues to this day. You will be able to find chirimen kimonos and Japanese arts and crafts in various places around the city. Because of its historical and cultural values, it was designated as "Japan Heritage" in 2017 by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

Tango Kingdom

A legendary kingdom said to have existed in ancient Tango. On the islands of Japan, burial mounds of powerful people called "kofun" were built in various places from the 3rd century to the 7th century. A burial mound said to be a king's tomb was discovered in Kyotango too. From it a headdress made of glass and iron swords, which indicate that there were interactions with the dynasty on the Asian Continent, were unearthed as burial goods.

After you have soothed your mind and body in the onsen and enjoyed the fresh seafood and seasonal fruits and vegetables, you will definitely want to come to Kyotango again.

Food

Kyotango has a treasure trove of foods that attract tourists and have won the admiration of many cooks and gourmets. Treasures like Matsuba snow crabs nurtured by the rough Sea of Japan, Kyoyasai vegetables which support the food culture of Kyoto, and a wide range of fruits grown all year round. The Taiza snow crabs caught in Tango-cho are said to be the best in quality and taste and are called "phantom crabs" because the numbers caught are small. Also, the local dish called Barazushi is an essential element when describing the food culture of Kyotango. 4

Nature

The sea of Kyotango has been providing the people with many blessings since ancient times. Its color changes throughout the year, but it is especially beautiful in May and September. It turns a deep greenish blue "emerald" color that brings peace and comfort to those who see it. In Kyotango where nature is abundant, you will be able to admire a kaleidoscope of colors all year round.

Onsens

(hot springs)

Japan, with its many volcanoes, is one of the top onsen (hot spring) countries in the world. Onsens have been used for medical treatment since ancient times, and many unique aspects of onsen culture like sweet-flag baths and citron baths were developed. In Kyotango, which is an onsen district with the top number of sources of hot springs in Kyoto Prefecture, there are 40 hot spring sources. Since there are many public baths and footbaths, you will be able to enjoy onsens with ease.
