Geology 104 - Interpreting Weather Maps

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this lab, the student should be able to:

✓ Identify pressure systems on weather maps

✓ Develop wind directions/circulation from a pressure pattern on a weather map

✓ Identify frontal systems on weather maps

✓ Correlate precipitation and clouds phenomena to pressure patterns and fronts.

Procedure - Follow instructions below. If you don’t use the colors indicated, you will lose points. The maps all are from the same day. Note that maps are not discussed in order!

Weather Map #1

1] What are the numbers on this map? What are the units?

2]What are the blue lines called and what do they represent?

3] Use a red pen or pencil to mark the location of the surface low pressure system on this map.

4] What is the barometric pressure in the center of the low pressure system (include units)?

5] Use a pencil to make arrows showing how the surface winds would cross the isobars in this system (Refer to Fig.15.10 in your text).

Weather Map #3 - Note: The red boxes show areas of thunderstorm activity.

6]. Use colored pen or pencil to label the types of fronts shown on this map (color should match color version!).

7] Use the proper symbols to identify the air masses that are interacting along the boundaries (symbols such as cP, mT etc, shown in Fig. 15.15).

8] Locate the intersection of the two fronts. What labeled feature from weather map #1 is near this junction?

9] Use a red arrow to show the direction of the warm front is moving and a blue arrow to show. the direction the cold front is moving.

10] Explain what is happening to cause thunderstorm activity. Include the idea of stability in your explanation.

Weather Map #2 - This map shows radar echoes from precipitation.

11] Which front do you think is responsible for the more widespread area of precipitation? How does your answer from #9 justify your answer here?

12] Which front do you think is responsible for the thunderstorm activity? How does your answer from #9 justify your answer here?

Weather Map #4 – Infrared satellite image

12] Using the maps that you have already examined, draw in the fronts on this image, using red for the warm front and blue for the cold front. Use the proper symbols.Do you recognize the classic comma pattern in the clouds? What is the name for this type of large scale weather system?
