CULTURAL VALUE QUESTIONNAIRE (MENTORS)

CULTURAL VALUE QUESTIONNAIRE (MENTORS)

(SHORT ENGLISH VERSION)

PART I

A

INSTRUCTION

In this part of the questionnaire you are asked to ask yourself: "What values are important to ME as guiding principles in MY life, and what values are less important to me?" There are two lists of values on the following pages. These values come from different cultures. In the parentheses following each value is an explanation that may help you to understand its meaning.

Your task is to rate how important each value is for you as a guiding principle in your life. Use the rating scale below:

0--means the value is not at all important, it is not relevant as a guiding principle for you.

3--means the value is important.

6--means the value is very important.

The higher the number (0,1,2,3,4,5,6), the more important the value is as a guiding principle in YOUR life.

-1--is for rating any values opposed to the principles that guide you.

7--is for rating a value of supreme importance as a guiding principle in your life,

ordinarily there are no more than two such values.

In the space before each value, write the number (-1,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7) that indicates the importance of that value for you, personally. Try to distinguish as much as possible between the values by using all the numbers. You will, of course, need to use number more than once.

AS A GUIDING PRINCIPLE IN MY LIFE, this value is:

opposed of

-1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

VALUES LIST I (A): Before you begin, read the values in List I (A), choose the one that is most important to you and rate its importance. Next, choose the value that is most opposed to your values and rate it -1. If there is no such value, choose the value least important to you and rate it 0 or 1, according to its importance. Then rate the rest of the values in List I (A).

PART I

B

INSTRUCTION

You are a youth worker. Maybe you have supervised young people with projects on a long term basis. Imagine your organization taking part in the EVS (European Voluntary Service) Programme. With this programme, a young person (aged between 18-25) from foreign country would volunteer to work with your organization for half a year or a year. Imagine you are to be the supervisor of this young person. Now, please fill in the two value lists again, keeping in mind which values you would want the young person to hold. So please rate the values again, not according to their importance to YOU, but according to the preferences in values you would have for the young person who you will be working with. (In the list, I will call that 'rating favorite volunteer') Use the rating scale below:

0--means you would not like to see the value in your favorite volunteer, so you object it.

3--means you would like to see the value in your favorite volunteer, so you appreciate it.

6--means you would very much like to see the value in your favorite volunteer, so you

appreciate it very much.

The higher the number (0,1,2,3,4,5,6), the more you would want to see the value in

your favorite volunteer.

-1--is for rating any values which you would in no way want to see in your favorite volunteer, so

you strongly object those.

7--is for rating a value you would deeply wish to see in your favorite volunteer, so you truly

desire it. Ordinarily there are no more than two such values.

In the space before each value, write the number (-1,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7) that indicate your preferences according to your favorite volunteer. Try to distinguish as much as possible between the values by using all the numbers. You will, of course, need to use number more than once.

THINKING OF MY FAVORITE VOLUNTEER, this value is:

most strongly very much truly

objected... objected... appreciated... appreciated... desired...

-1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

...as a guiding principle in HIS/HER LIFE.

Before you begin, read the values in List I (B), choose the one that you would value most when thinking of your favorite volunteer, and rate its appeal. Next, choose the value that you would object most in your favorite volunteer or--if there is no such value--choose the value that you would prefer least in your favorite volunteer and rate it -1, 0 or 1, according to its appeal. Then rate the rest of the values in List I (B).
