Unit 5 – Energy in Living Systems

BSCS Unit 5 – Energy in Living Systems Name: _______________

2011-2012

Powerpoint Presentation Slide(s)

□ Listed below are the objectives or goals for student learning for this unit.

□ You will see your name next to one or more goals. This will be the goal(s) that you are responsible for creating a powerpoint slide to present to the class.

□ You will be given one class period to make the slide(s). Be aware that you may not have one laptop per student – you will work with another person and help them make his/her slide and then s/he will help you create your slide.

□ Before you create your one slide, you will need to locate the appropriate reading in your textbook, and read the section that discusses your goal. You may also do internet research. On a separate piece of paper, do a rough draft of your powerpoint. Write the words that you want to put on the slide and note down what kinds of pictures you want to insert.

□ Remember that an EXCELLENT powerpoint slide will:

o Have explanations in bulletpoints, but not too many words per slide

o Have relevant and accurate photos/ diagrams. Remember that you must cite all images (that you didn’t personally create from scratch!) ON your powerpoint slide just below the image (using small size).

o Be clear – do not use difficult vocabulary (except for the vocab you are learning for this unit).

o After your slide has been approved for content by your teacher, then you should workon color design/ background and create (optional) animations or sounds.

Goals for Learning

Cellular Respiration

Identify the reactants and products of cellular respiration (know equation).

Describe the purpose of cellular respiration. Identify what cells perform cellular respiration.

Describe how/where energy is stored. Understand that there is a relationship between energy and matter, such as the storage of energy and the

organization of matter in chemical bonds.

Differentiate between aerobic and anaerobic respiration.

Describe the two different types of fermentation (alcoholic and lactic acid).

Differentiate between exothermic and endothermic chemical reactions and between kinetic energy and potential energy. Understand that there is energy

in matter and that the energy is conserved even when it is transferred.

List the three stages of cellular respiration, their location within the cell, and reactants and products of each process. _______________

__________________ ____________________

What is the energy currency of the cell? (Define the role of ATP in linking matter to energy.)

Explain the biological basis of muscle fatigue.

Explain how muscles work in antagonistic pairs.

Explain metabolism and differentiate between catabolism and anabolism.

Describe the role and structure of the three types of muscle (smooth, cardiac, and skeletal).

Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of organisms with hydroskeleton, exoskeleton, and endoskeleton.

Photosynthesis

Identify the reactants and products of photosynthesis (know equation).

Describe the purpose of photosynthesis. Identify what types of cells perform photosynthesis.

List the two stages of photosynthesis, their location within the cell, and reactants and products of each process. (Explain light-dependent

_____________and light-independent reactions _____________)

Describe the interrelatedness of photosynthesis and respiration.

Identify (on a diagram) the parts of leaves involved in both gas exchange and water transportation. (stomates, phloem, xylem, guard cells, cuticle)
