Report on Activities

June-December 2007

This constitutes a report of my activities over my first half-year service as ALA President. Thank you for this opportunity to serve you and to continue to learn. I wish to thank those who have provided support and assistance over the past six months. Specifically, I wish to acknowledge the contributions of assistants, Ms. Sara Albert and Ms. Alex Hershey, members of our Task Forces, my students in the School of Information at The University of Texas at Austin, and supportive ALA staff, especially Ms. JoAnne Kempf and ALA Executive Director, Keith Michael Fiels, among many others.

A. Communication

An important part of my service over the past three months has involved meeting with and responding to media requests ranging from zero to ten requests per week. I participated in a planned Media Day in Washington, D.C. on 18 July 2007 where I visited with staff from media outlets/producers including Indian Country Today, Inside Higher Education, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and NPR. We are considering a new visit with Media outlets in Washington, DC early in Spring 2008.

Interview topics over the past six months included Harry Potter, public library services, library patron demographics, summer reading programs, teen library services, multicultural library services, public library fines, library trends, new technologies in libraries, serials evaluation, public access computing, book store influence and library collections, immigration laws, bookmobiles, outsourcing public library management, drive-up library services, LIS education, Library Card Sign-Up Month, and digitization of library materials. In addition, a number of interviews were largely biographical in nature, especially those requested by the American Indian press.

Media placements include Arizona Daily Star, The Christian Science Monitor, Library Journal, Newsweek, Real Simple Magazine, Revolution Health, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Seattle Post Intelligencer, Tampa Tribune, The (Texas) Monitor, and many other venues. I especially appreciate the assistance of ALA staff members Macey Morales, Jennifer Petersen, Andy Bridges, Melanie Anderson, Emily Sheketoff, and ProMedia Staff members. Presidents of our ALA Divisions, especially those heading AASL, ALSC, and YALSA, were especially helpful in responding to my often last minute requests for assistance, as were a number of practicing librarians.

I submit almost weekly reports on activities to ALA Council and to the ALA Member list and post these reports on my diary blog. I regularly communicate with Chairs of many ALA Council Committees and have organized ongoing face-to-face meetings and/or conference calls with the Presidents of ALISE and ASIS&T.

I have been fortunate to represent ALA at 24 conferences or other events including the state library conferences in California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, and Kentucky. I attended several events related to diversity issues, including the 6th National Conference of African American Librarians, the National Role Models Conference organized by Minority Access, Inc., and the Third National Conference on Tribal Libraries, Archives, and Museums. I participated in or attended a public meeting on the digital TV transition, the National Book Festival Performance and Dinner, the Banned Books Event in Chicago, a Native American Heritage Month event at the Library of Congress, and a Big Read event in northern Minnesota. Finally, I attended several international events, including IFLA in South Africa, the LIANZA conference in Rotorua, Aotearoa/New Zealand, two book festivals in Mexico, and a conference in China. Updates to my schedule are posted on . Presentations and publications over the past six months appear in Appendix A.

B. Appointments to Committees

I continued to work with Ms. Lois Ann Gregory Wood to fill any openings. We also made appointments to a Task Force on E-Participation, as requested by ALA Council. Appointees include representatives of Divisions and Round Tables.

C. Preparing for Presidential Initiatives

We continue to work on planned presidential initiatives related to our three task force areas, addressing concerns with Supporting Library and Information Science Education Through Practice, Circle of Literacy, and Workplace Wellness. In addition, we are making progress with our three demonstration projects and have organized discussions around meeting effectiveness, a national library camp for children, and a national oral history program for retired/retiring librarians.

The Workplace Wellness Task Force is on track with the planning for the Wellness Fair and Wellness Pavilion at the 2008 ALA Annual Conference. Henry Stokes joined our Team in November 2007 and is creating the Workplace Wellness Website. Jenifer Grady, Director of the ALA-APA, has hosted a survey of ALA-APA members, inviting contributions of content on topics related to workplace wellness. We have also been collaborating with the Lance Armstrong Foundation to provide two copies of the LAF’s SURVIVORSHIP Notebooks to all U.S. public libraries. John Chrastka at ALA has provided excellent support and encouragement in this task.

A Subcommittee of the Supporting LIS Education Through Practice Task Force is working with ALA’s Committee on Education on planning the two 2008 Education Forums. The Forum at the ALA Midwinter Meeting will take place on Friday, 11 January 2008, and will focus on current doctoral student research. A second 2008 Education Forum will take place on Friday, 27 July 2008; the topic will be service engagement by master’s students enrolled in ALA accredited master’s programs or NCATE programs. Another Subcommittee is making progress on submitting chapters to the monograph, The Service Connection, to be published by ALA Editions in 2008.

The Circle of Literacy Task Force is gathering website content highlighting library services for those incarcerated and immigrant populations. Similarly, plans are underway for the Gathering of Readers online event to highlight indigenous children’s reading and culture during the 2008 National Library Week. Rebecca Taylor and Kit Pilgrim, graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin, have recently taken leadership roles with the Circle of Literacy. A small group including representatives of ALISE, ASIST, and ALA’s Committees on Education and Accreditation has been holding conference calls and face-to-face meetings to discuss the future of library and information science education.

The Emerging Leaders cohort completed their feasibility study of a National Library Camp. A representative met with youth Division leaders in Chicago in October with a follow-up meeting planned for the ALA Midwinter Meeting. In October I met with Sharon Saulmon, Project Director of Information Matrix Camp. We are continuing our conversation and she is contributing valuable advice to our discussions.

ACRL’s Education and Behavior Sciences Section continues to collaborate with us on the development of five meeting effectiveness podcasts. They polled the EBSS Advisory Council at the 2007 ALA Annual Conference, asking for input on the topics to be covered. Eli Mina, ALA Parliamentarian, will be the podcast host.

We have started conversations related to demonstrating a national oral history project of retired/retiring librarians.

Graduate students in the fall 2007 graduate “Public Libraries” class at The University of Texas at Austin’s School of Information prepared reflective essays discussing the project and constructing a bank of prospective interview questions. A small group training session will take place on Friday, 11 January, to launch the efforts.

We have also been involved in planning several events for the 2008 ALA Midwinter Meeting and ALA Annual Conference. Mr. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has agreed to be the key speaker for the President’s Program at Midwinter. He will discuss his latest book, On the Shoulders of Giants. The President’s Program at the Annual Conference will address supporting Native children’s English and Native language literacy. In addition, a small group is planning a “Many Voices Many Nations” event to take place on Friday, 11 July, highlighting indigenous writing, culture, and performance.
