A Message From the President

Greetings! As the year gets underway and the annual meeting approaches, I want to bring to your attention Society-wide efforts to build an SOT endowment portfolio. Starting this year, the SOT Endowment Fund Board has been charged to serve as a strategic focus for fund-raising activities in order to build the SOT endowment and to promote the growth of individual funds such as the Carl C. Smith Fund. The Endowment Fund Board, along with the SOT Finance Committee, will provide financial oversight for all endowment funds. At the request of the SOT Council and the Endowment Fund Board, the officers of the Mechanisms Section have agreed to roll the Carl C. Smith Fund into the SOT endowment portfolio. The Carl C. Smith Fund will continue to be managed by the Mechanisms Specialty Section and a memorandum of understanding has been approved by Council to specify the terms and conditions of the Carl C. Smith Endowment Fund.

The roll out of the SOT Endowment Initiative is timely as the Specialty Section prepares to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Carl C. Smith Graduate Student Award at the 2007 Annual Meeting. A special invitation has been extended to past winners for the celebration. I hope that you will set time aside to join us Monday, March 26, 2007 for the celebration.

Please consider putting together proposals for symposia, workshops or special sessions for submission to the Program Committee as they meet to consider scientific sessions for the 2008 annual meeting. Your continued support of mechanistically-oriented research programs is essential for the continued success of our specialty section and the Society.

Best wishes,

Ken Ramos

We Want Your Submissions For Mechanisms Symposia, Workshops and Continuing Education Courses!

Gary O. Rankin

It is not too late to submit proposals for a symposium, workshop or continuing education course for the 2008 Society of Toxicology meeting to be held in Seattle, Washington. The Mechanisms Specialty Section has a long history of sponsoring high quality programs, and we would be pleased to work with you as you prepare your proposals.

The process begins with you identifying a timely topic and developing that concept into a program, such as a symposium or workshop. Examples of the various types of proposals can be found on the SOT website under the “Forms and Applications” link on the left sidebar. As part of the submission process (Step 4), you can select the Specialty Section that you would like to sponsor the submission. Identify Mechanisms Specialty Section as your primary sponsor. Submissions will be due around the end of April, 2007. However, if I, or other officers, in Mechanisms can help you during the process, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
