Homework #5: VDI Wire Sizing and Other Due Feb 7

ANSWER the following questions. Please show your work and use units.

1. Using the VDI method, determine the correct size wire (AWG) to maintain a 3% or less voltage drop for a 1200 watt system at 48 volts with a one way wire distance of 45’.

2. Using the VDI method, determine the correct size wire (AWG) to maintain a 5% or less voltage drop for a 500 watt system at 12 volts with a one way wire distance of 30’.

3. What percent voltage drop would there be using a 10 AWG wire for a 40’ run of wire at 500 watts and 24 volts?

4. [pic]

5. Using T105s (220 AH, 6 volts), make a 440 AH battery bank at 12 volts. Sketch the battery bank and its connections.

6. Using Trojan L16s (6 volts, 350 amp-hours) sketch a battery bank with a 2100 Amp-hour capacity at 48 volts. How many batteries would you need and how would you wire them?

7. What size pipe would you use for a creek with 50’ of head and 75 GPM?

8. Continuing with problem #7, if there is 200’ of pipe: a) How much head loss will there be? B) What is the dynamic head? What is the power output expected assuming 53% efficiency?
