REQUIREMENTS TO FORM AN IEEE SECTION

Upon joining IEEE, members are automatically associated with an IEEE Section. IEEE Sections provide their members a venue to share technical, professional, and personal interests locally, with their fellow members who live and/or work in close proximity.

The petition to form a new section must include items 1 to 6 below. For a simple view of the petition process, a workflow is provided on page 5. Any questions should be submitted to petition@.

1. Name of the proposed section, which shall be descriptive of the geographical area it will encompass.

2. Name of the organizer, who must be of IEEE Graduate Student Member or of higher-grade status, and must be an IEEE member for a minimum of six months. The organizer shall serve as the interim Chair pending election at a later date.

3. Signatures of at least fifty (50) IEEE voting members having mailing addresses within the territorial limits of the proposed Section. It is suggested that more than the specified amount of signatures be included to assure that all petitioners qualify, thus speeding the processing of the petition.

a. In lieu of their signatures on the petition, IEEE will accept an email message from IEEE members stating their agreement to the formation. These emails must include the name of the member, IEEE membership number and a brief statement of support of the petition. These messages are to be sent to the petition organizer who is requested to cut and paste the email messages, preserving the email header information, into one document.

4. A business plan that includes mission/goals, planned meetings and activities for first 6 months. (see page 4)

5. The territorial boundaries of the proposed section (country, state/province, postal codes/pin codes, etc.) specifically delineated.

6. Indication in writing that the section will abide by the IEEE Constitution, Bylaws, and published interpretations of policy.

7. The Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) staff will review the petition and work with the organizer to resolve any discrepancies. MGA staff will seek feedback from the concurring and non-concurring sections that are involved in the territory concerned, as well as endorsement of the petition from the Regional Director. Approval from the Member and Geographic Activities Board will follow at its next scheduled meeting.

SUBSECTION ELEVATION

This form may be used to request elevation of a subsection to a section. MGA staff shall provide the petition to the Region Director, who will in turn contact the parent geographic unit (if the geographic parent is a Section), for feedback regarding the elevation. Based on the feedback provided by the parent geographic unit, the Region Director will recommend the appropriate action prior to submission to the MGA Board. The Member and Geographic Activities Board approval will follow at its next scheduled meeting.
