MUSIC NEWS

We are preparing for our upcoming spring show, RAZZ TAZZA M’ JAZZ, for the March 12th PTA meeting. The 3rd level classes and the school choir will present songs, instrumentation, dance, drama, and a good time! Don’t miss it!

Since the new semester, classes have jumped right in with lots of activities. K-1 have been learning about dynamics (loud/soft) and tempo (fast/slow) with singing, moving, and playing instruments. Level 2 students have reviewed so, mi, and will soon also add la and will identify these notes on the music staff. After completion of forte, piano, crescendo, and decrescendo, 3rd grade students have begun learning songs for the spring show. Within a couple of weeks, 4th grade students will complete Fifty Nifty, a song about the 50 states, and be able to sing all 50 states in alphabetical order from memory. Grade 5 students are continuing their recorder skills and just performed Swing Low Sweet Chariot in conjunction with our study of Spirituals.

There are so many wonderful things going on in Ms. White’s class, I would like to take a moment and congratulate Yashwanth Gokorakonda from Ms. White’s 3rd grade classroom. He won the Williams Traditional Magnet school spelling bee. Yashwanth went against his other third grade classmates to win a spot to represent his class in the school spelling bee. He then competed against third, fourth, and fifth grade students. Yashwanth

enjoys reading, playing chess, and playing with his Beyblades. He will compete in the county spelling bee in February.

Mrs. Giles’ Math Corner

With a little time, assistance, and encouragement every day you can help your child develop strategies that lead to success in understanding key math concepts. Concepts are general ideas that explain the how and why of mathematics. They often generate the response, “Oh, now I get it!” If students have forgotten how to find the answer to a problem, they can often use their understanding of concepts to devise other ways to find the answer.

Word problems often involve both concepts and skills. Students need to understand concepts to decide how to go about solving a problem; for example whether they should add, subtract, multiply or divide. They need to use skills to compute the answer.

To help your child develop an understanding of concepts, ask your child to explain homework problems to you. You might begin by having your child read a problem aloud. Then have your child restate the problem and describe how he or she arrived at the solution.

Remember that you do not have to be a mathematician to participate in your child’s mathematics education. Showing your child how mathematics relates to real-world experiences is an important part of his or her education, a part in which you are the major contributor.

*Emily is having a party with 52 people. Emily needs 1 cup and 1 plate for each person.

1. How many packages of plates does Emily need? Explain your answer using words, pictures and/or numbers.

2. How many packages of cups does Emily need? Explain your answer using words, pictures and/or numbers.

COACH BOBO’S CORNER

Physical Education News

We are in the process of preparing for our upcoming Jump Rope for Heart Fund Raising. Williams has been one of many schools across the nation that has participated in the American Heart Association Jump Rope for Heart Event. This is something that Williams Kids have done for the last twelve years.

Through hard times, last year Williams Kids raised over $900! This year our goal is to raise over $3,500 which will be the largest amount ever raised at Williams! We have the greatest kids in the district! I believe we can make this happen!

A MESSAGE FROM THE SPEECH PATHOLOGIST

Increase your child’s language, social and cognitive skills in a fun way, by playing games. No need to dominate the dining room table for weeks with the Monopoly board, simply a quick game of Go Fish or Uno is beneficial. Some other games to invest in are Guess Who, Scrabble and Goblet.

LITERACY COACHES CORNER

MS. MARGO ROWE

My name is Margo Rowe, literacy coach at Williams Traditional Magnet. I am married with two children and three grandchildren. The Little Rock School District is near and dear to my heart. Both of my parents are retired from LRSD and I attended Hardin Bale Elementary, Southwest Junior High, Parkview, and Little Rock Central High School. I received my bachelor's degree from UALR and a master's degree in education. I taught kindergarten at Jacksonville Elementary, Woodruff, Bale, and Gibbs. I became a Title I reading specialist and taught at Badgett for eight years before coming to Terry Elementary in 1994. I spent 17 years at Terry as a reading interventionist and literacy coach. I have enjoyed meeting the staff, students, and parents at Williams Magnet. Thank you for making me feel welcome.

FOURTH GRADE NEWS

Greetings from Reading Recovery!

We have had a wonderful first semester working with our students. Our first round Reading Recovery students are finishing up their individual series of lessons. We will begin testing for second round students next week. Students receiving interventions in literacy are progressing in several areas in reading comprehension and writing. Third through fifth grades are learning strategies to help them answer multiple choice and open response items on the benchmark. We are excited about the efforts and improvements we are seeing from our students. Keep it up!

[pic] Becoming Critical Thinkers and High Readers

Mr. Benjamin

It is the beginning of a new school semester here at Williams Magnet and Mr. Benjamin’s class is hard at work to become excellent readers and high critical thinkers. This semester we have picked up where we left off last semester. I teach students with a wide variety of disabilities and learning styles. I do my very best to tap into each and every one of their individual intelligences. With that being said, my students and I help our learning community grow with rich literacy and math activities. We work on math computation, rounding, multiplying one and two digit numbers, fractions, algebra and some geometry. For literacy I read a lot to my students because I have students of all different reading levels. To help them become better readers, I do before, during, and after reading strategies with them. This helps them to make predictions and think about the reading. I ask them critical thinking questions about some of our readings because I feel that this will help them to make good predictions and use good inference skills in life. We do math and literacy activities on the smart board, hands on games, and usage of computer time so that they are learning in more ways than one. These are not all of the things that we do on a daily basis, but I wanted to give you all a sneak peak of what goes on in the classroom of Mr. Benjamin’s “Critical Thinkers and High Readers”

1st Grade Team

First grade is excited to welcome Mrs. Echols to our team. She is replacing Mrs. Curtis who went to Hamilton to be a library/media specialist. Mrs. Echols will be a great addition to Williams Magnet! We have been reading the Pigeon books series by Mo Willems and identifying the four types of sentences (interrogative, imperative, exclamatory, imperative) found in each book. We love the pigeon books and have had fun recalling sentences from the stories. Stop by soon and see our pigeons with sentences we have created.

Williams welcomes Ms. Carise Echols to First Grade

Ms. Echols is a UCA graduate. She is happy to be part of the Williams Magnet Team. She loves the school and kids. She loves to shop, eat and bake. She is lover of pinterest and travels every chance she gets. She loves to meet new people.

Kindergarten Project!

This will be our 3rd annual “100th Day Parade” at Williams Magnet! Kindergarten and 1st grade students participate in this fun event! Kindergarten students make a “float” with 100 items to pull in the parade. You can get creative! Decorate a shoe box or small box with 100 items (i.e. stickers, pom-pom balls, etc). We want this to be a learning experience for your child! We want them to participate in the collecting and counting of the project. Please attach a sturdy string so that your child can pull their float in the parade. Please “test” it to make sure that it will pull! We will parade through the school for 1st- 5th graders to see!

Dr. Vivian Evans – Putting It All Together

Maintaining current needs assessment information and providing leadership and direction in the development of activities, scheduling and running physical and cultural activities, issuing written and oral instructions, examining work performance and communicating official plans are some of the tasks that will enable our students to perform exceptionally well in their classes and on the Benchmark Exam.

Here at Williams, teachers will be using test-taking strategies that will enable our students to clearly understand the importance of performing at their highest level. Strategies such as:

General Test Taking Tips – EX: Tip #4 – Remember that most tests have time limits so work as quickly as you can, but do not rush through your work. Rushing and shortcuts usually end up in making mistakes.

Multiple Choice Test Tips – EX: Tip #12 – Look at all the questions first. The questions will help you know what to look for as you read through the passages or look at the diagrams.

Timed Test - EX: Tip #19 – Watch for KEY WORDS. When you find a key word read slowly and carefully. The right answer is usually very close.

Math Test Tips – EX: Tip #24 – Always read the question one last time before you choose your answer. Make sure that you have done all the steps.

Language Test Tips – EX: Tip #26, #27 and #28

#26 – Capitals are important! Review your Capitalization rules.

#27 – Punctuation rules are very important. Review your Punctuation rules.

#28 – Spelling is also very important. Review your basic spelling rules. Read the directions very carefully. Sometimes you may be asked to find the words that are NOT spelled correctly. Make sure that you understand the directions.

Nurses Notes- February 2013

[pic]

In the health world, flu continues to be a main area of concern. Arkansas physicians have reported large numbers of individuals with infections and hospitalizations due to flu. And several Arkansans have died from flu complications this season.

Health officials want the message spread that it is not too late to get the flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is our best defense in fighting and keeping flu from having a widespread effect on human lives. Even though it takes 2 weeks to build up immunity, some antibodies begin to build immediately. Furthermore if individuals do happen to get flu after taking the vaccine, it is generally a milder case.

Our second line of defense against the flu is to isolate the sick to

(Nurse Notes continued)

prevent exposure of flu to others. If either you or your child has flu, please stay home until there is no fever or flu symptoms for a full 24 hours without the help of medication. Teach your children to practice the 3 Cs:

Clean your hands often.

Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze by using the crook of your elbow.

Contain germs by staying away from those who are sick and staying home yourself if you become ill.

We are required to track communicable diseases in the school district. Please let the nurse or school office know if your child has been diagnosed with the flu or any other communicable disease. The phone number to reach the nurse is 447-7105.

Stay healthy.

Fifth Grade Team

Williams is gearing up for our new recycling program. The Little Rock School District has partnered with Waste Management which will allow us to recycle more than just paper! Beginning in February, a new team of 4th and 5th graders will lead Williams as we begin recycling plastics, glass, and aluminum, as well as our paper products. We are looking forward to providing our students with even more opportunities to learn about protecting our environment!
