2011 Vocus Articles1/25/2011Mitchell College Launches Long-Awaited Online Radio Station, Radio Mitchell, Tuesday, January 25NEW LONDON, CT - January 24, 2011 - Mitchell College students, alumni, staff and faculty will launch the long awaited new internet radio station, Radio Mitchell, on Tuesday, January 25, with public studio tours and a celebratory reception on campus. officially begins broadcasting at 11am with continuously scheduled music and several weekly live broadcasts."The music is going to be very diverse because we are allowing students to choose and coordinate the programming," says student DJ and Station Manager John McGowan, a freshman from Warwick, Rhode Island. "We'll feature every genre from Top 40s to the golden oldies, and we hear that some faculty members would like to host a program as well."Campus community members are invited to "Taste of Radio," a reception from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm at Sandella's, which will feature cake, other refreshments and prizes. There will also be an opportunity to meet the student DJs."It is a tremendous feeling to have the station up and running," states Dr. Richard Lucas, Communication Chair and Radio Mitchell Faculty Advisor. "It represents Mitchell's continuing efforts to provide students with practical, hands on learning opportunities within amazing training facilities. At the same time, we are excited to offer our community another venue for entertainment and information."Much of the work that has gone into Radio Mitchell over the past several years has been in creating the proper facilities. A new studio was built on the second floor of Michael's Dairy, from which all broadcasts will air. Additional training facilities were built in the campus's Bond House with the support and funding from Mitchell College parents, the Walter Rogachenko and Michael Grilli families. Public tours of the studio will be offered from 3 - 6 pm on Tuesday as well. An informal and ceremonial ribbon cutting will be held at 3pm. Lucas, members of the College's Radio Club, student DJs and other Communication faculty will be on hand. The studio is located at 629 Montauk Avenue, on the second floor of Michael's Dairy.Several faculty members assisted Dr. Lucas with the studio design and construction of the facilities, and Caruso's Music of New London provided broadcasting equipment. However, Dr. Lucas credits freshman student McGowan, with the final enthusiasm that pushed Radio Mitchell to reaching its goal of launching.McGowan brings experience in radio and audio production to his fellow students, acting as a coach in radio techniques, programming and audio production. Mitchell College Graduate and New London Mayor, Martin T. Musil, Ph.D., M.P.H., L.H.D., a member of the Mitchell College Board of Trustees, will receive a rare repeat honor this spring. Dr. Musil will give the Commencement Address and receive a Doctor of Science (Sc.D.), honoris causa, from Lincoln Memorial University in Appalachia on May 7, 2011 for his leadership in the American environment and health movement. Musil is currently Senior Fellow and Adjunct Professor at the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University, Washington, DC.A popular campus lecturer and former broadcaster, Musil’s honorary degree from Lincoln Memorial follows a residency there this fall as a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow. Musil won acclaim from students, faculty, and university President James Dawson for his ability to work with numerous contending constituencies in coal country.Musil’s honor follows similar recognition by Mitchell College in New London, Connecticut where he was also a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow, gave the Commencement Address, and received a Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D.), honoris causa, in 2009. Mitchell College President Mary Ellen Jukoski has noted Musil’s pioneering work in environment and health, his willingness to take risks, and his ability to bring people together. As with all Mitchell College cultural events, this event is free and open to the public.The goals of the project are myriad. Mitchell strives to develop programming that enhances the educational experience across its curriculum and that also strengthens its ties to the community. This project will appeal to arts, humanities, behavioral sciences, education, law and justice policy studies, and first year experience curricula. More than 250 Mitchell students will experience the Time In events as part of their course requirements. As well organizers hope to engage the broader community in dialog and reflection as it concerns the power of the arts to positively impact attitudes and behaviors related to socially- and self-destructive tendencies and violence, especially among youth.Simultaneously, a thematic art exhibition, mounted both at Expressiones and at Mitchell, will explore visual interpretations of the experience and the broader implications of incarceration. Expressiones will host an opening reception on Saturday, April 16, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Artists include Corina Alvarezdelugo, Carol Dunn, Guido Garaycochea, Lynda Gardner, Pam Gordinier, Scott Gordley, Brad Guarino, Jessica Rosner, and Ken Steinkamp.“This topic touched me immediately,” says Guido Garaycochea, who is curator and founder of the not-for-profit Expressiones, as well as a former volunteer at York CI. “This project will connect the public with a situation it often does not and cannot imagine. Time In gives us the chance to think about a forgotten part of the population. The public needs to understand that many inmates do not belong in prison in the first place, and that all returning prisoners need to be given a second chance.”Through a mix of story, song, and dance, Time In brings the humanity of women behind bars and the complex tapestry of their feelings—anger, pain, regret, fear, loneliness, despair and glimmers of hope—to the public. It portrays these women’s reappraisals of their lives and identities as they measure and consider the passage of time while serving their prison sentences at the York Correctional Institution in Niantic."Prison is the endpoint to a complicated life journey for each person who arrives there,” Dworin says. “The complications of their journeys need to be looked at in considering the issue of crime in America. Time In allows us a glimpse of that human aspect and helps us understand crime, prison, and rehabilitation. It is a timely piece for urban centers everywhere as we reflect upon the more than 2 million people who are incarcerated in America – roughly 25% of the total incarcerated population in the world – while we make up only 1/25 of the total world population.”The Time In performance will take place on Sunday, April 17th, at 3:00 p.m., in the Mitchell College Clarke Auditorium. Each artist has chosen a series of representational work as well as a self-portrait for the exhibition, offering the viewer a glimpse of life through different lenses.All artwork is original, unframed and taped to the gallery wall in the manner of trendy West Coast galleries, and a selection of the photography will be available for purchase.“This is an important opportunity for students to be able to exhibit their work in a professional gallery setting and to get a feel for the life of a professional photographer,” says Professor Roger Riley.Photography is offered for students in the College’s Graphic Design and Marketing Program as well as to local residents. Malloy will address the Mitchell College graduating class of 2011 at the College’s 67th Commencement Ceremony this Saturday, May 14 at 10am on the Great Lawn. “We are truly honored to have Governor Malloy speak at graduation,” says President Mary Ellen Jukoski. “He has such a deep and personal understanding of the challenges that many Mitchell College students who also have learning disabilities face on a daily basis. His own story is incredibly inspiring and motivating.”Governor Malloy’s political career includes 14 years as Mayor of Stamford. His accomplishments include bringing new jobs to the city, leading the fight for more affordable housing, championing transportation efforts and seeing Stamford rated as the ninth most livable city in the country by Forbes Magazine.Education, additionally, has always been at the forefront of Malloy’s efforts. He served on the Board of Education in Stamford prior to taking office, and as Mayor, implemented the first city-wide pre-kindergarten program, which ensured that all four-year-olds could attend school regardless of their parents’ financial situation.In childhood, Malloy struggled to overcome extensive learning and physical disabilities. His parents made a point of focusing on their young son's strengths, which included oral learning and the spoken word, while finding him the best physical therapy and tutoring they could afford.Malloy went on to receive his B.S. from Boston College in 1977 with a dual major of Political Science and Sociology. He graduated Boston College Law School in 1980 and began his career as assistant district attorney in Brooklyn, NY from 1980 - 1984, winning 22 convictions in 23 felony ernor Malloy has served as a Trustee at Mitchell College. His additional civic roles include acting as Trustee and Vice Chair for Education of the Jobs, Education & Workforce Committee on the United States Conference of Mayors; Co-Chair of Small Business/Partner America Task Force; Former President for the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities; and adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut. Typically scheduled in fall, reunion weekend highlights also include: walking tours, sailing with the current Mitchell College sailing team, alumni games and Sailfest fireworks from Mitchell Beach.Herreshoff’s presentation, Technology, Yachts & People, will be held from 4 – 6 pm in the College’s Weller Center and is open to the public. A wine and cheese reception will follow the presentation. The College is offering event admission by donation; visitors are asked to give-what-they-can. Proceeds support Mitchell College students and programs.Both sailors and non-sailors will enjoy this extraordinary view of the world of yachting. However, we need to focus our clean-up efforts on the main walkways throughout campus, as well as the residential and classroom areas, since we begin classes for the fall semester this Thursday,” according to Joe Pardee, director of facilities. “We estimate the cleanup efforts throughout campus, including Mitchell Woods and Mitchell Beach, will last several more days.”Mitchell Woods is a 25-acre parcel of land used as a public recreational facility.
