DPW And The Connecticut Army National Guard Dedicate Southington Readiness Center

The State Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Connecticut Army National Guard hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly expanded and renovated Southington Readiness Center located at 600 Woodruff Street in Southington on October 16, 2007.

Governor M. Jodi Rell called the $5 million project a much-needed investment in our safety and security. “This excellent project, administered by the Department of Public Works, is critical for our Connecticut Army National Guard soldiers who train here and for emergency personnel who will be able to access this fine facility in the event of a natural disaster or other regional crisis. We must have the best facilities available if we are to maintain our State’s readiness,” said Governor Rell.

State Department of Public Works Commissioner Raeanne V. Curtis said, “We are very pleased with success of this terrific project, and we look forward to achieving Governor Rell’s and the National Guard’s goals of expanding and modernizing the State’s military training facilities.”

Major General Thaddeus Martin, the Adjutant General / Commissioner of the Connecticut National Guard, stated, “With the assistance of our state partners from DPW and the Office of Policy and Management in overseeing the execution and State funding of this project we now can operate from a facility that supports the requirements and needs of today's soldier.”

Funding for the project included $700,000 from the State and $4.3 million from the federal government.

The scope of work consisted of a total renovation of the existing 17,269 square-foot Southington Readiness Center, originally built in 1976, and the addition of a new 9,100 square foot pre-engineered all-metal cold storage building. Site work involved installing a new paved parking lot, a back-up generator, a pavilion roof for outside events, a new site security fencing system, and landscaping.

The Readiness Center interior renovations included a new assembly hall, classrooms, administrative offices, a large kitchen, locker rooms, and an exercise room. The project also included a new roof, windows, and entrances, and new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.

The new cold storage building is a pre-engineered metal building on a reinforced concrete foundation. It is designed for warehouse storage of military supplies.

The contractor for the Readiness Center renovations was Kronenberger & Sons Restoration, Inc. of Middletown. The architect was SEA Consultants of Rocky Hill. The contractor for the cold storage building was Borghesi Building and Engineering of Torrington, and the architect was Butler Construction of Kansas City.
