HARBORDALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
PARENT/STUDENT HANDBOOK
ATTENDANCE “Attendance is Important to Student Success”
School is open for instruction 180 days a year from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Florida law requires attendance for all children beginning in Kindergarten. However, we do not want an ill child to come to school – sniffles, colds, and upset stomachs are better cared for at home.
To meet a requirement set by the state that school districts establish a definition of a “pattern of non-attendance,” the School Board approved a major change to the District’s attendance policy. Effective for the 2019-2020 school year, both excused and unexcused absences along with tardiness and early sign-outs will be counted when determining a student’s pattern of non-attendance. This is a change from pervious years when excused absences had no impact on a student’s attendance record. A student will have a “pattern of non-attendance” if he or she is absent from school a total of 30 hours (5 days) in any one marking period or 60 hours (10 days) within 90 days.
The Broward Truancy Intervention Program (BTIP) is a coordinated countywide partnership between law enforcement agencies and the Broward County School Board. The program is designed to stress the importance of parental responsibility to ensure regular school attendance through the monitoring of all excused and unexcused absences and compliance with state attendance laws.
Each time your child is absent you are required to notify the school, either by telephone or through a note, within 48 hours stating the reason for the absence. If the school is not notified the absence is considered unexcused.
Harbordale has Memory Call, which will be activated before 7:15 a.m. and after 3:00 p.m. If you need to report an absence, you can call 754-323-6050 and leave a message with the child’s name, teacher’s name, grade and reason.
Our Parent Link phone system has been established to call your main contact number and notify you when an unexcused absence or tardy has been recorded. If the school is not notified within 48 hours the absence is considered unexcused. After attempted interventions by the school to correct unexcused absences, the Office of the State Attorney will intervene to ensure compliance with the law. If you need further information regarding the BTIP Program, please contact the office at 754-323-6050.
Students have two days to complete make-up work for each day of absence. Please refer to the Code of Student Conduct Handbook for further information regarding excused/unexcused absences.
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM (SUNSHINE Child Programs.)
Sunshine Child Programs provides after school child care at Harbordale for children who attend Harbordale Elementary School. After school child care is provided from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. every day school is in session and 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. on Early Release Days. Activities include arts/crafts, homework completion time, science, dancing, board games, outside play, computer lab, story time, and other activities. All payments are due monthly by the dates specified on an approved payment scale.
Sunshine also offers a “Day Camp” during teacher planning days and school holidays, at specific locations, for registered Aftercare students. The hours for this program are 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Registration fee for the 2019-2020 are available at their website: .
AUTOMOBILE TRANSPORTATION
The west side of the school on Miami Road is the designated area for ALL drop-off and pick-up of car riding students. Please assist us in ensuring student safety and facilitating the traffic flow by pulling up to the far end (north) of the driveway and exiting. If your child has not arrived for dismissal, please circle around and re-enter. Please do not drop-off your child in the road or parking area, this is extremely unsafe. All students who do not get dropped-off in the car loop must be escorted to the entrance gate.
Be certain that your child understands transportation arrangements before leaving home in the morning. This helps to avoid last minute messages to your child.
If your plans change you must notify the school in writing prior to 1:00 p.m. Students will be sent home normally unless school is contacted in writing. All messages are given to students just prior to dismissal.
BICYCLES
Please review the following safety rules, if your child rides a bicycle to school:
1. Wear a helmet.
2. Walk bicycles across major intersections and on school grounds.
3. Ride on the right hand-side of the street with the traffic or on a sidewalk.
4. Use proper stop signals.
5. Observe stop signs.
6. More than one person riding on a standard bicycle is against the law.
Bicycles are parked in the bicycle area inside the campus. Once a student arrives at school on a bicycle, he/she must dismount and walk the bicycle to the rack. There is no bicycle riding on school grounds. It is suggested that all bicycles be locked during the day. Riding a bicycle to school is considered a privilege and abuse of proper rules will result in your child not being allowed to bring a bike to school.
WALKING STUDENTS
Harbordale students who walk to school should not arrive prior to 7:40 a.m. unless they are eating breakfast at school. Please remind your child to use all designated crossings and sidewalks. Crossing guards are there to ensure student safety and should be obeyed at all times. Walking students are to enter from the front of the school. Walkers should wait in the cafeteria (K-1) or the hallways (2-5) until school starts. Students are expected to be in their classrooms to begin instruction at 8:00 a.m.
BUS TRANSPORTATION
Bus transportation is provided for students living beyond two miles of the school. *Non-bus students cannot ride the bus in order to visit with a student who does ride the bus. Each student is responsible for his/her behavior at the bus area and while riding the bus as outlined in the Code of Student Conduct booklet. If a student’s behavior creates a safety hazard on the bus, it is the school administrator’s responsibility to deprive the student of bus privileges for a period of time. Parents will be expected to transport the student to school if a bus suspension should occur. To maintain the safety of all children, the following rules are necessary:
• Cooperate with and abide by the rules of the bus driver at all times.
• Keep hands, feet, arms, etc. inside the bus.
• Remain in your seat at all times.
• Keep aisles clear (books, paper, feet, etc.)
• No eating, drinking, or chewing gum on the bus.
• Talking should be kept to soft conversations.
• Be completely quiet when approaching and crossing railroad tracks.
• Remain in the loading area while waiting for the bus.
• Allow the bus to come to a complete stop before loading and unloading.
• Older children should assist younger ones in loading and unloading the bus.
• Arriving at the bus stop ten minutes ahead of schedule should be enough time.
• After unloading, go directly home.
The phone number for Central Area Transportation is 754-321-4480.
DISMISSAL
All children are expected to leave the school upon dismissal at 2:00 p.m. If it is necessary for you to pick-up your child before 1:30 p.m., you must come to the office, with picture id, to sign him/her out. The teacher cannot dismiss the child directly from the classroom. Instructional time is so important to your child that we ask that you please do not ask us to have your child waiting for you in the office. We will call your child to the office as soon as you arrive. Per School Board policy, no child will be dismissed between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. If your dismissal plans change, you must notify the school in writing prior to 1:00 p.m. Students will be sent home normally unless the school is contacted in writing. All messages are given to students just prior to dismissal.
Rainy Day – Establish a procedure for rainy day pick-up. Please make definite, clear plans in advance so children will not need to come to the office to call you and cause frustration when you get busy phone lines. Our procedure for car riders is to keep them safely inside.
Early Pick-Up – When early pick-up is necessary, we request that you send a note to your child’s teacher in the morning and pick-up your child prior to 1:00 p.m. Students will not be dismissed between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. We are not able to release children by telephone request. Students will only be released to parents, guardians, or a person whose name appears on the registration or emergency forms. Adults will be requested to show picture identification to office personnel. Your children’s safety is our #1 concern!
Early Release Days – We are all life long learners. Early Release Days give instructional staff the opportunity to attend training outlined in our School Improvement Plan. The dates are as follows: October 17, December 20, February 20, March 19, April 9 and June 2.
Please note these dates, as students will be released at 12:00 noon. Changes for your child’s dismissal on these days will be requested from you in writing.
Emergency Dismissal – In the event of emergency dismissal, as determined by the Superintendent, children should know where they are to go. Our Parent Link system will be used to phone all parents and inform you of changes, such as school closures. Buses will be dispatched to pick up those children ordinarily riding the bus. Emergency dismissal forms must be completed by parents, updated as necessary, and returned to school. This will alleviate a lot of tears and fears.
CAFETERIA
Our school cafeteria staff plans and serves nutritious meals. We offer a salad option daily for students. Menus are located on the Broward Schools website (). If the menu contains foods your child will not or cannot eat, you may pack a bag lunch.
Lunches may be purchased daily, weekly, or by the month. When paying by the month or week, children should go directly to the cafeteria on the first day of the week/month. If a student has paid for meals in advance but is absent one day or more, money for meals will be carried over. Parents are able to make online meal payments through the food and nutrition services website. Please visit the Broward School website . You can also monitor your child’s account, view their eating choices and receive account balance alerts.
Applications for free or reduced meals are available online at . New applications must be made each year. It is the applicant’s responsibility to notify the school of any change in the submitted information. Notification of your application status will be made within a week.
Broward County Schools received a grant this year that will provide free breakfast for all Broward County School students. If you would like to particiate in this free breakfast program, please have your child report to the cafeteria during serving times, 7:30 a.m. – 7:50 a.m. Prices for lunch are $2.00 and $.40 for reduced. Milk is $.50 for a half-pint for those who bring lunch. Adult lunch is $2.75. Wednesday is ice cream day. Students are encouraged to pay $.65 for their ice cream on Mondays. Also, Juice Bars are on sale Fridays for $.40. On occasion children forget their lunch money. When this occurs, students are allowed one charge. However, the one-day charge must be paid before another meal can be charged.
Serving hours: Breakfast is served from 7:30 – 7:50 a.m. Lunch begins at 10:30 a.m. Students eat lunch with their class at a specified time. (Ask teacher for specific time.)
Parents are welcome to join their child for lunch on an occasional frequency, this will be open from September 3rd – May 1st. Parents must obtain a visitor’s badge from the front office and may eat in the courtyard with their child. For safety reasons, please only allow your child to leave the cafeteria to eat in the courtyard. Please do not ask if you can take another student out of the cafeteria to eat with you and your child. This puts the staff members in the cafeteria in an awkward position since they cannot grant your request.
Cafeteria Rules:
1. Walk quietly into the cafeteria and stay with your group at all times.
2. Respect adults, use good manners, and speak softly.
3. Remain seated at all times and raise your hand if you need help.
4. Collect all lunch items for disposal, walk quietly to the disposal and line up quietly.
5. Listen to cafeteria staff for directions.
For the health and safety of all students, Broward County School Board policy does not permit the distribution of home baked goods to students. This includes cakes, cookies, cupcakes, etc. You may send in food prepared and purchased from a store.
District policy does not permitted students or parents to order food items to be delivered to school campuses. School personnel are not permitted to accept commerical food deliveries for students.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES AND INFESTATIONS
School Board policy states that students infected or suspected of being infected with any communicable disease or infestation (including head lice, impetigo, scabies, or ringworm) shall not be permitted to attend school. Students having such communicable diseases or infestations shall be excluded from school until shown by examination to be free of infection or infestation. Upon returning to school, the student must provide a note from a health professional stating the student’s current medical status is safe to return to school, the student is not contagious and/or is under treatment. A complete explanation of the rules can be found in the policy handbook located in the school office.
COMMUNICATION
Teachers and parents have the same objective . . . your child’s academic success and welfare. If you have a concern, which relates directly to the classroom, your first step is to contact the teacher to schedule a conference. Many misunderstandings can be cleared up if dealt with directly and promptly. If concerns still exist after conferencing with the teacher, please contact the office for an appointment with either a member of our Support Staff or an Administrator.
Please do not go to the classroom during the school day to discuss problems with the teacher. The children and the teacher need this time to work together.
Watch for our newsletter, Harbordale Happenings, e-mails, various notices and flyers throughout the school year. It is a great way to stay informed about upcoming activities and important dates. Please visit our website for school information: harbordale.
COMMENTS/CONCERNS
Parents may provide input into your child’s teacher’s performance assessment at any time by writing, or requesting a meeting with the Principal, Mrs. Bucolo. Also, you may provide input into the Principal’s assessment by writing, or requesting a meeting with Dr. Mark Strauss, Director of the Office of School Performance and Accountability.
CONFERENCES – Parent Teacher
Conferences between parents and teachers are essential in meeting the needs of children. Individual parent/teacher conferences will be held at least twice during the school year before or after school. Your input is important and we encourage your participation. Parents are encouraged to contact the teacher when they feel the need to discuss any phase of their child’s progress.
When arriving for your scheduled conference, please sign-in at the office and obtain a visitor’s badge prior to entering the classroom.
CURRICULUM
Harbordale Elementary has a tradition of academic excellence. We offer the essential skills necessary for building a solid foundation in reading, writing, computing, and evaluating and we encourage each child to strive for individual achievement commensurate to his/her potential. We use basic textbooks in all areas of instruction with supplementary, hands-on materials to ensure challenge and learning and to meet Florida State Standards.
Any curriculum questions or concerns should be directed to your child’s teacher during a conference. Every effort will be made to meet your child’s individual needs.
DISCIPLINE
Students at Harbordale Elementary School will work together to help each other reach their potential. The school encourages self-discipline by holding the student responsible for his/her behavior and actions. Everyone will be treated with respect and dignity. Parents, please help your child become familiar with these rules.
1. Respect all adults and other students.
2. Listen and follow directions.
3. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
4. Use appropriate behavior at all times.
5. Running in the hallways is not allowed.
The School Board has adopted a student discipline and code of conduct. The 2019-2020 Code of Student Conduct will be viewed electronically this year. Read it carefully and discuss it with your child. Please sign the following pages and return to your child’s teacher: Acknowledgment form, Media Release form, and any “Opt-Out” forms that apply to your child.
Each teacher has a Discipline Plan utilized in the classroom. The code of conduct and the classroom discipline plan are aligned to the District Discipline Matrix. This matrix outlines interventions that are to be used when referrals for serious behavior problems are sent to administration. With your help and support we will be able to continue to ensure a safe and orderly learning environment.
FIELD TRIPS
Field trips are planned by teachers to compliment curriculum. School Board policy requires signed permission before a child is allowed to accompany his/her class on any field trip. Permission forms will be sent home for parental consent. Please return the permission slip by the indicated due date. All students going on a field trip are expected to adhere to the teacher’s classroom and school rules. We encourage parents to chaperone field trips, however you must be a School Board approved volunteer prior to the trip. Bus policies and insurance prohibit young siblings from accompanying classes on field trips.
HOMEWORK
Children are encouraged to study at home. Setting aside a definite time each evening for homework will develop good work habits. Routine study time at home is an excellent plan, particularly if it is done with a parent in a quiet, relaxed, and happy atmosphere. If a child says he/she has no homework, have the child do one of the following:
Practice music Work on school projects
Read library books Make word cards
Do number fact cards Play educational games
Work on a computer Write a story
In addition to regular homework assignments, if time permits, students in first, second, or third grade would profit from 10-15 minute periods per evening from these activities listed above. Students at the fourth and fifth grade levels would benefit from a 30-minute period every evening. These time periods should be free from distractions. Parents should read to their children for at least 15 minutes daily, and the students should read to the parents. All school papers taken home should be reviewed and corrected. Every student in grades K-5 will receive a red folder to bring home graded papers and important notices. Planners will be given to 2nd -5th grade students for logging assignments, and parent/teacher communication. Please help by reminding your child to bring his/her planner back to school every day. If a planner is lost the student will have to purchase a new one.
HOURS
The office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The student day is 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Students will be admitted into the classrooms at 7:55 a.m. Arrival and departure from school should coincide closely with these times, as there is no supervision before 7:30 a.m. or after 2:30 p.m. unless a child is enrolled in Sunshine Aftercare. Students who are on campus before the start of the school day will be supervised from 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. and those students who are on campus after the end of the school day will be supervised from 2:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. unless they are enrolled in Sunshine Aftercare. There will be no adult supervision provided other than during these times.
Children eating breakfast may arrive at 7:30 a.m. and should go directly to the cafeteria. If students not eating breakfast arrive prior to 7:55 they are to go to the cafeteria (K-1) or hallways (2-5). Upon dismissal, children should go directly home or to the place designated by their parent/guardian. As per School Board Policy, students will not be dismissed between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. In the event of an emergency between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., please contact 754-224-6043 to receive assistance.
ILLNESS
The school office quiet room is used for minor sicknesses and injuries. Children who are ill should not be in school for their sake and in respect for the health of others around them. If your child becomes ill or injured, you will be notified immediately. Please provide the school with current information as to your work and home numbers along with emergency contacts.
INSURANCE - Student
Student school insurance information is available at all times through the school office. Remittance is to be made by the parent directly to the company through U.S. Mail.
INTERIM REPORTS
When specific difficulties or weaknesses in a child’s progress become evident, his/her teacher will prepare an interim progress report. There are certain skills that a student must learn at each grade level to be promoted at the end of the school year. If your child is not working on grade level, a Progress Monitoring Plan (PMP) will be developed. The PMP is intended to help the student master the skills and concepts expected at his or her grade level.
Interim reports are sent home halfway through each marking period. The scheduled dates are September 13, November 19, February 11, and April 30. You may request a conference, or the teacher may ask you to come in. Please sign the report and return it to the school as soon as possible.
LOST AND FOUND
Parents are encouraged to label items, which can be easily lost, i.e., jackets, sweaters, lunch boxes, and book-bags. If you are missing an item, check with the office. After an appropriate waiting period, the school donates lost articles to the County’s Clothing Bank or local agencies.

MEDICATION
According to School Board Policy the school is prohibited from dispensing any medicine, prescription or over the counter medication unless a Medication Authorization Form is completed by the doctor and parent. (This form can be obtained from the front office or on our website under the forms link.) This includes cough drops, aspirin, eye drops, nasal sprays, and other medications. The Broward County Health Department has recommended that parents inform their physicians and dentists of their children’s school hours in order that adjustments of time and dosage can be made to avoid conflict with school policy. If this is unavoidable please go to the office for a Medication Authorization Form or see the school’s webite to download the form. An adult must bring Medication(s) to school. Students may not bring the medications to school.
OPENING ANNOUNCEMENTS
Daily opening announcements begin at 8:05 a.m. Students, teachers, administrators and guest speakers conduct these announcements via closed circuit television, WHBD. This is a time of the day for important announcements concerning student activities, school-wide events, and special recognitions to develop school pride.
Please help your child enjoy this program each morning in a relaxed manner by ensuring he/she arrives to school on time.
PARENT ORGANIZATIONS
Harbordale School Association (H.S.A.) – The mission of H.S.A. is to provide support and assistance to every child’s intellectual, emotional and social growth by working in cooperation with the administration, faculty, and staff of the school. As a result of H.S.A.’s fund raising and our many volunteers, we are able to provide experiences for all students and direct classroom assistance to individual and small groups of students.
Another objective of the H.S.A. is to enhance parental involvement in Harbordale. Please assist us in achieving success by contacting an officer of H.S.A. with concerns and requests you would like to address in the best interest of our school. The 2019-20 Executive Board officers and contact information can be obtained on their website: .
Several general business meetings have been scheduled for the 2019-2020 school year. Please visit the HSA website for the most updated information at . All parents and interested persons are invited to attend these open meetings. Notices of the meetings are published on the marquee, in the school newsletter, “Harbordale Happenings”, by flyers being sent home, and through e-mail or phone calls. Each event, activity or project (including the 5th grade class) has a committee chair responsible to the Executive Board. Our emphasis is on family involvement. Volunteers are always welcome at Harbordale and help is always appreciated. Please remember to complete a required Volunteer Application Form and sign in through the STAR System in the office once you are approved. Make sure you bring picture id with you when you come to sign in.

Harbordale School Advisory Forum (SAF) – The Advisory Forum consists of parents, teachers, and administration. The Forum acts as a liaison between the School Board, the Central Area Advisory Board, and the school to receive and disseminate information. The Forum assists the principal in preparing the Annual Report and budget; in boundary decisions, with safety concerns, and assists in identifying the educational needs and priorities of the school.
School Advisory Council (SAC) - The School Advisory Council (formerly School Improvement Team) establishes annual goals in the areas of reading, writing, math, and science for the school based on needs assessments and parent and staff input. The Council is comprised of all Harbordale stakeholders, parents, business and community members. Membership on Goal Sub-Committees is open to all. Dates and times for SAC meetings will be communicated on a regular basis. For further information regarding SAC you may contact the school at 754-323-6050.
PERSONAL ITEMS
Personal items such as toys, electronic games, etc. may not be brought to school. If games are allowed for a special activity, the teacher will send a note home. Students should not carry excessive amounts of money to school. The school cannot assume responsibility for the care of this property. *School Board policy prohibits students from using cell phones and beepers in school, or on buses.
PICTURES
Every year we employ a photographer to take individual and class pictures of the children for a small fee. Many parents like to buy these pictures to exchange with their friends or to keep in the family. Watch for the picture taking schedules in “Harbordale’s Dolphin Doings” and flyers throughout the school year.
PROGRESS REPORTS
The purpose of the Pupil Progress Report (Report Card) is to inform parents of their child’s progress. A student must be in attendance 25 days within Broward County to receive grades. The report is sent home with children in grades K-5 at the end of each quarter (see calendar). Grading Scale is as follows:
Grades K-2 1=Consistently
2=Developing
3=Area of Concern
X=Not evaluated
Grades 3-5 A=Superior Progress
B=Above Average Progress
C=Average Progress
D=Below Average Progress
F=Failure
[pic]
The scheduled dates are November 13, January 29, April 15 and June 3. You may request a conference, or the teacher may ask you to come in. Please sign the report card cover and return it to the school as soon as possible.
PROMOTION/RETENTION
It is important to note that no single test is used to determine if a child is promoted or retained. There are certain skills that a student must learn at each grade level to be promoted at the end of the school year. If your child is not working on grade level, a Progress Monitoring Plan (PMP) will be developed. The PMP is intended to help the student master the skills and concepts expected at his or her grade level.
Specific criteria regarding promotion for the 2019-20 school year will be communicated, as it is available.
TEXTBOOKS/LIBRARY BOOKS/RESOURCES
Each child receives a set of books to be used for the year furnished by the School Board of Broward County. Many additional books and other resources are available and may be checked out on an individual basis. We ask your cooperation in seeing that they are returned to school in good condition. Please be sure your child’s name is written in ink on the back of the front cover of all his/her school textbooks. The school will require payment by the student/parent for lost or damaged books or materials.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
We have several clubs and activities for our students. We encourage participation in the Chorus, Student Council, WHBD, Safety Patrol, Recycling Club and other poster, essay and creative writing activities and contests.
STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT BOOK
The 2019-2020 Code of Student Conduct Handbook is posted on Broward Schools’ website at . Please read and discuss the information contained within this document with your child. You must complete the acknowledgement form online as part of the Back to School Online Forms required each school year.
TARDY PROCEDURE
Being on time for school is a valuable part of a child’s learning and should be stressed. By being on time, the child will have the needed time to prepare for the day’s work in a relaxed manner. If you know your child is going to be late, please send a note stating the reason. In this way, you and your child’s teacher will know that the child was not lingering or playing on the way.
The first bell (warning bell) is 7:55 a.m. Students must be in class by the 8:00 a.m. bell, or they will be marked tardy. After 8:00 a.m., students arriving late will receive a tardy slip from the office before entering the classroom. The School Board policy for tardiness is as follows:
Tardiness is disruptive to the learning environment and can have a negative impact on student achievement.
1. Tardiness is defined as a student not being in the classroom when the class is scheduled to begin.
2. Excessive tardiness will be addressed on a case-by-case basis to determine if there is a pattern of non-attendance.
3. Parents must follow the same process to excuse a tardy as they do to excuse an absence.

TESTING
Formal and informal testing is done each year in an effort to assess the needs and obtain information regarding the academic strengths and/or weaknesses of each child. These results are used, along with other information, to strengthen, revise and/or modify our instructional programs, and to demonstrate our student academic achievement to the Department of Education and the district.
Students in first through fifth grade will participate in the district and state adopted testing programs. Students in first and second grade take district end of the year tests in reading and math. Third through fifth grade students take the new Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) in reading and math. In addition, fourth grade and fifth grade students are administered the FSA Writing Test and fifth grade the FCAT Science 2.0 Test. Informal assessments are ongoing for all students to monitor their progress and assess competencies in various areas. Assessment informs teachers, parents, and students about their learning.

Be sure that all textbooks and library books are returned and that meal charges are paid.

VISITORS
Visitors are welcome at Harbordale Elementary School! As a security measure and for the protection of all children, any time you visit the campus you are required to sign in at the office with a picture id and obtain a name badge. The School Board has purchased a new visitor, vendor and volunteer checking/tracking system to be implemented district wide. The Security Tracking and Response (STAR) system will provide security checks on each visitor against Sexual Offender databases; print visitor badges, and track volunteers. If, for any reason, your child needs to leave campus before 2:00 p.m., you must sign him/her out in the office, before 1:30 p.m., and office personnel will call the classroom. Also, a reminder to all volunteers . . . PLEASE OBTAIN YOUR BADGE FROM THE FRONT OFFICE AND WEAR IT AT ALL TIMES WHILE ON CAMPUS.
VOLUNTEERS
We love and appreciate our volunteers. This is your school and we invite you to visit the classrooms and volunteer at any time except when we are administering standardized tests. For the safety of students and staff, District policy requires volunteers complete a Volunteer Form each school year and be cleared through the District. This process could take as long as 6 weeks. All volunteers must complete a Volunteer Form each school year and be cleared through the District prior to volunteering. Please go to to complete the application. As with visitors, volunteers must sign in and receive an ID badge at the office before going into any area of the school. Due to liability issues, preschool children are not permitted to accompany volunteers in the classrooms when assisting or on field trips.
WEAPONS
School Board Policy clearly states that weapons or any objects used as a weapon are not to be brought to school. Toy guns are considered a weapon and should not be brought onto the school campus. Any tool or instrument used in a threatening manner will be considered dangerous and will result in suspension.
Any child bringing a weapon to school or using any instrument in a manner that could be hazardous to another person will be suspended with the possibility of expulsion. (See Student Conduct and Discipline Code Book)
WORKING TOGETHER
The primary responsibility of Harbordale Elementary School is that of providing students with the educational programs, activities and services to develop productive and responsible citizens in our community.
To satisfy the needs of the individual and his/her culture, we focus attention on intellectual, democratic, moral and social values. We recognize the uniqueness of the individual and provide opportunities and experiences for the total development of each child. We welcome our parents to join us in this important endeavor.
TIPS TO PARENTS
We have a mutual friend, YOUR CHILD. It is our desire to make our school a happy learning environment for all. We will strive to enrich the children’s experiences through the use of books, audio-visual aids, carefully planned units of work, field trips, and various educational materials while at school. As an interested parent, you can do much to help. The suggestions given below are some helpful things you can do.
❖ Help your child start the day right. See that your child has plenty of sleep. Avoid unpleasant situations so that the child will begin the day in a happy frame of mind. Help your child arrive to school on time in order to begin the school day in a relaxed manner.
❖ Notify the school if your address or telephone number changes so that records may be kept up-to-date.
❖ Visit the school. Some parents never visit the school until trouble arises. Let your child feel you are interested in the school and the teachers.
❖ Join and work with H.S.A.
❖ Be sure to send a note or call the school reporting absences within 48 hours.
❖ For the health and safety of all students, Broward County School Board policy does not permit the distribution of home baked goods to students. This includes cakes, cookies, cupcakes, etc. You may send in foods prepared and purchased from a store.
❖ Give the child an opportunity to share responsibilities.
❖ Encourage your child to finish a task begun.
❖ Encourage your child to learn to eat healthy.
❖ Mark sweaters, jackets, book bags, etc., with your child’s name.
❖ Arrange individual conferences with your child’s teacher.
❖ Read carefully all notices and bulletins the school may send out.
❖ Read to and with your child.
❖ Appreciate the work your child brings home. It will encourage additional efforts in the future.
❖ Limit TV and video game time.
❖ Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy meal before coming to school.

HARBORDALE’S SCHOOL SONG
Lyrics by S. Bevill and Music by M. Berman
Harbordale you’re my very first choice,
We’ll say it with pride in a loud clear voice.
The teachers are great, staff and students too,
Harbordale, we love you.
Harbordale you’re my very first choice,
We’ll say it with pride in a loud clear voice.
We make lots of friends, do math, read and write,
Harbordale, you’re dynamite!
