5th Grade Unit 2 test: Interactions Among Living Things

5th Grade Unit 2 test: Interactions Among Living Things

Test Date: Monday, November 6th 2017

Chapters 5-6

This test will consist of 24 multiple choice questions, 4 short answer questions, and a diagram.

Vocabulary: (look up these definitions in your book and review them using the quizlet game on the science class website!)

Photosynthesis Transpiration

Consumer Producer Decomposer

Herbivore Carnivore Omnivore

Population Community Competition

Symbiosis Mutualism Commensalism

Parasitism Predator Prey

Adaptation extinction Limiting factor

Succession Primary Succession Secondary Succession

Conservation Reclamation Energy pyramid Food Web

Concepts to remember:

1. Plants are producers as they can produce their own food. They make this simple sugar during a process called photosynthesis. Be familiar with each part of a plant and its job. Remember the leaf makes food, and know what it uses to make food (sunlight, water, carbon dioxide) and what it gives off as a byproduct (oxygen). Also, be familiar with transpiration and how water evaporates from leaves.

2. Know the basic order of how energy is transferred in most food chains. They always start with the sun which gives energy to a producer! (fill in the blanks)

sun -> -> herbivore (primary consumer) -> omnivore/carnivore (secondary consumer)->carnivore (top predator) ->______________

3. Be able to identify examples of producers, types of consumers: herbivores, omnivores and carnivores, as well as decomposers.

4. Be able to give and identify examples of different types of relationships within an ecosystem such as mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. (pg. 220)

Example of mutualism: ____________________________

Commensalism: __________________________________

Parasitism: ______________________________________

5. Be able to give and identify examples of secondary and primary succession in different ecosystems. (pg. 228-231) Look at your notes about succession to understand the steps.

Write 2 ways primary and secondary succession are different:

1.

2.

6. Be able to identify how adaptations and competition help organisms survive in their communities. Adaptions can be a physical body part to help an animal get its basic needs met (like being able to run fast, or have camouflage.) Some animals have to compete with each other to get their basic needs met. For example, alligators and turtles both eat fish. When the population of fish goes down in an area, then the turtles and alligators will have to compete to get food. Too little food leads to an increase in competition, which will limit the number of organisms that can share an ecosystem. We call this a _________________________

7. Be able to identify natural and man-made changes in an ecosystem.

Natural: ______________________________

Man-made: ___________________________

8. Remember that when an ecosystem changes too quickly some organisms are not able to adapt or survive. This can cause an entire species to die off, also known as ____________________.

9. Look over energy pyramids on pages 204-205. You should know the exact percentage of energy that is passed from one group of organisms to another in each level of the pyramid. (Hint: it’s the same percentage passed on to each level.) What percent of energy is passed from each trophic level to the next in a food chain, food web, or energy pyramid? __________%

You should also look over the chapter reviews for chapters 5 and 6. This will help you study for the test! Good Luck!!
