Overview

Dear Prospective Parent/Guardian and Student,

Thank you for your interest in filling out an application for 5th Grade at the Academy for Discovery at Lakewood (ADL) for the 2020-2021 school year. ADL is a city-wide 3rd through 8th grade school with a focus on Project-Based Learning (PBL) and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP). Our program challenges students through rigorous coursework, while teaching them skills to be successful in learning and life. Parents/guardians and students should have a complete understanding of academic expectations before applying. Listed below and throughout the application is information about our programs so that you can make the best decision on whether or not to apply.

PBL will be embedded in instruction for all grades, 3rd through 8th. Implementation will be phased in as our teachers continue to practice this approach. Please review a video about PBL here: .

The teaching and learning that takes place in grades three through five, helps to prepare students for ADL’s IB MYP in grades six through eight. The IB MYP is recognized as a premier program of study around the world. Skills such as global thinking, civic-mindedness, service learning, real-world problem solving and inquiry-based learning are taught which are fundamental to the program. You can find additional information on the IB Web Site: .

ADL is a fully authorized IB MYP World School. In 2017, ADL became only the second school in South Hampton Roads to be an authorized IB MYP World School. Our teachers have been trained in IB MYP concepts and the IB Curriculum Framework. IB encourages continuous reflection and development – so our work is never done. Even though the IB program is officially at the middle school level, our elementary school students will still be exposed to IB concepts in their lessons. In fact, our third through fifth grade classes prepare students as pre-IB students, in order to help transition to the rigorous program in sixth grade.

Those wishing to attend ADL will need to have an understanding that the classroom learning environment will include more inquiry-based instruction, collaborative based activities, infusion of real-world problem solving, and high levels of student engagement.

After you have reviewed all of this information, if you are excited about being part of ADL and feel that you can commit to our mission and philosophy, then please complete the components of the application. The application must be completed and returned no later than, Friday, May 15, 2020, by 3:00pm. Additional information can be found on our school’s web site.

Sincerely,

Qualifications and Selection Process

Qualifications

✓ A completed application was submitted by the deadline of May 15, 2020, 3:00pm. Academy for Discovery at Lakewood does not maintain a late application file and those applications cannot be considered for the wait list.

✓ The student is in good standing at their current school, including in academics, behavior and attendance. All student records will be reviewed to qualify for lottery. If the student is applying from a private or home-schooled environment, a current transcript or proof of progress must be submitted with the application. Home schooled students must be registered with Norfolk Public Schools in order to apply. A final review of grades will take place before students are transferred and/or enrolled. Promotion to fifth grade is required for all students.

Selection Process

Selection into Academy for Discovery at Lakewood is completed through a lottery of qualified applicants. Once students have met the qualifications listed above, they are qualified for selection through the lottery process. As of April 27, 2020, there are only 4 seats available for 5th grade.

The lottery for the 2020-2021 school year will be conducted before June 1, 2020. Notification of selection or wait list will be mailed after this date. Students who do not get selected through the lottery are placed on a numbered wait list. If an opening occurs before the 10 Day Count after the start of the school year, the lottery selection continues until each open slot is filled. After the 10 Day Count, open seats will not be filled. Students have to reapply for 6th grade. Applications for 6th grade are generally released mid-November of each year as part of the Norfolk Public School’s Specialty Program process.

Once a student is selected in the lottery, the student and parent will be expected to attend a mandatory information and enrollment session at the school. Parents and students who do not attend that event will forfeit their selection to the school. The mandatory information and enrollment session date will be in the acceptance letter.

(Please check each box after reading the description)

By checking here, I am acknowledging that I have read the qualifications and selection process for ADL.

By checking here, I am acknowledging that I understand that if my student is selected in the lottery, both the student and parent/guardian will be required to attend a mandatory information and enrollment session at the school in the Summer when the stay-at-home order has been lifted.
