Important Summer Information – 5th grade

This summer’s math packet includes eight open ended thinking problems, one for each week of the summer.

We suggest having your child do one problem each week instead of trying to cram it all in at the beginning or the end of the summer. They are designed to provide the opportunity for your child to persevere in solving problems. Each one may about 30 minutes to complete. You are encouraged to work together with your child to complete the problems.

Doing math throughout the summer has a great effect on a student's math competence, as well as math self-confidence. It has been shown that there is “math slide” for students who do not continue to do math through the summer.

In addition to the problem solving, we’d like students to work on First in Math at least a few days per week. There is a math log posted online to keep track of time spent on First in Math. It will only be available until July 31st.

These new summer math packets are posted on the District website . Please click on Curriculum and Instruction (across top menu bar) and go to Mathematics K-5.

You can also go to your school web page and click on the link. You can also find other great math websites and math apps on the District website.

Please make every effort to print the file that's appropriate to your child's grade level. Contact your school office if you do not have access to a printer.

Your child's teacher will be looking for the completed packet and First in Math log to be returned on the first day of school.

On the Language Arts link, you will find the Neshaminy School District’s “Suggested Summer Reading Lists” and “Catch the Reading Bug” list for each grade level. If you do not have access to a computer or printer, please contact your school office.

Research tells us that for our readers to retain what they have learned, they must continue to practice and make reading a part of their daily life.  Reading stamina must be built and maintained just like any other muscle in your body.  As children become great readers, they will become more confident and anxious to share their knowledge with teachers and peers.

Encourage your children to read widely over the summer months and help them document what they are reading.  Bucks County libraries have programs for children during the summer and are a great resource for parents.  Barnes and Noble and Borders also run summer reading programs that help children log what they are reading and win free books for their effort. Neshaminy elementary buildings also have summer reading and writing projects for their students.

Be sure to use RAZ Kids reading site all summer to earn points and win prizes.

Many students have begun keeping a Writer’s Notebook this year. Summer offers children many exciting opportunities to notice the world around them and document these “noticings” in their Writer’s Notebooks.
