Research

1. Demand and Consumption Analysis; Marketing; and Applied Econometrics

This research has been important to the food industry, the concerned public, and the government.

a. Fish and shellfish research important to the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC) of the Virginia General Assembly on the assessment of the economic potential and management of the seafood industry.

b. Related research work dealing with fish and shellfish led to solicited work on: (1) the evaluation of potential price effects of consumer avoidance associated with planned radioactive water release from Three Mile Island and (2) the evaluation of programs to increase nutrient enrichment in the Chesapeake Bay as part of President Reagan's commitment for enhancing the Bay environment. Other research efforts in this area include examining and assessing factors affecting retail demand for aquacultural species, specifically catfish and crawfish as well as additional seafood species.

c. Research on the demand for beef products important to the American Meat Institute and the National Live Stock and Meat Board. Research efforts led to the development of effective marketing programs for lean and choice beef.

d. Research on convenience foods important to the Human Nutrition Information Service, USDA, in the examination of food consumption patterns as well as the assessment of nutritional adequacy of the diet.

e. Research on qualitative and quantitative aspects of scanner data from retail food firms, important to the food industry and to demand analysts. Work with IRI and A.C. Nielsen, the leading agencies in the private sector on the use of scanner data.

f. Research on the impacts of health and nutrition information in food demand analysis, important to the food industry and to demand analysts. Work with the Agricultural Research Service, to analyze predictive ability of behavioral measure of fat intake.

g. Research on consumption patterns in food away from home and prepared foods, important to the food industry and to demand analysts.

h. Research relating to beef imports to South Korea and Taiwan, demonstrating the potential of beef producers in entering the Pacific Rim market.

i. Research relating to the assessment of market strategies to enhance returns to lamb producers.

j. Research on pricing and procurement practices by beef packers.

k. Research on the rate of return of investment for producer checkoff funds in generic advertising of commodities (milk, cotton, pork, orange juice, lamb, Texas oranges and grapefruit, Texas pecans, and soybeans).

2. Research on diversion ratios and unilateral price effects of proposed merger activity (Coca-Cola with Cadbury Schweppes; Coca-Cola with Quaker Oats; Coca-Cola with South Beach)

3. Food Distribution

• This research program involves ties with food retailers.

a. Research enabling food industry executives to more effectively develop short-run predictive models that have a direct bearing on pricing, ordering, and inventory control decisions.

b. Research involving the use of the largely untapped wealth of data from retail stores and supermarkets made possible through electronic scanning operations. This research is unique among academicians across the country. As a result of this research, I have been invited by the Food Marketing Institute, the Food Distribution Research Society, and the Agricultural Marketing Service to give seminars on the utilization of scanner data for managerial decision-making (operations and merchandising) in food retailing. Also, because of expertise in this area, I served as a consultant to the National Livestock and Meat Board in regard to research issues for beef through the use of scanner data.

c. Research, conducted at the request of the Virginia Food Dealers Association, concerning the impacts on food dealers and consumers of proposed legislation in regard to a gradual reduction of the sales tax on food. The results were important in the subsequent defeat of the proposed bill.

4. Development and Application of Econometric Theory and Techniques

a. I was chosen by the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA) as one of six agricultural economists to teach a refresher course in econometrics in conjunction with the annual meeting of the AAEA in August 1983.

b. I served as a consultant/lecturer for the Institute of Professional Education conducting seminars on "Economic Modeling and Forecasting", and on “Forecasting Methods and Applications” from 1988 to 2003.

c. I was invited to the University of Minnesota as a visiting professor in 1985.

d. I have made presentations to the Institute for Water Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, concerning how to effectively use time-series and forecast methods for water policy.

e. I have worked with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in helping to assess the usefulness of various econometric models for agricultural policy in Virginia.

f. I was selected as an invited speaker for the Rod F. Ziemer Symposium dealing with the topic, "Econometrics: Problems of Inference," at the University of Georgia.

g. I was selected as an invited speaker dealing with the topic, "Taking the Con Out of Economic Forecasts," at Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney, Virginia.

h. I was selected as the first to give the Havlicek Memorial Lecture in Applied Econometrics at Ohio State University.

i. I currently serve as a lecturer for the National Association of Business Economics conducting seminars on “Advanced Statistical Techniques for Economic Forecasting” and “Econometric Techniques for the Business Analyst”, and “Using Statistics in Economic Analysis”.

j. I will be conducting seminars for the SAS Institute, Inc., in conjunction with the Business Knowledge Series in Applied Econometrics, beginning in Fall 2008.
