I. GENERAL INFORMATION

Continental Aerospace Technologies? (Continental?) NiC3 cylinders are offered as an optional

replacement for nitride or through-hardened steel cylinders. The nickel carbide plating process

applies a corrosion and wear resistant protective coating to the interior cylinder barrel surface.

Currently, cylinders with 5.00" and 5.25" bore diameters are available. NiC3 cylinder offerings

will expand to our full product line in the future.

Continental has standardized cylinder bore and ring gap dimensions for NiC3 cylinders through

improved manufacturing techniques. The latest cylinder designs feature tighter bore and choke

tolerances and have been incorporated within this service document.

This service bulletin provides the following information:

1. Identification of Nickel Carbide (NiC3?) cylinders

2. Compatibility with existing cylinders

3. Cylinder fits & limits, bore dimensions; new minimum/maximum and service limits (for

continuing subject cylinders in service between major overhaul(s))

4. Cylinder removal, cleaning, and installation procedures

5. Piston ring assemblies and dimensions; piston ring gaps, and designated location in

subject cylinder to measure ring gaps

6. Piston ring installation

7. Follow-on maintenance

NOTE: Follow the ¡°Flight Check¡± and ¡°Break-in¡± instructions in

M-0, Standard Practice Maintenance Manual, Section 7-2.4. for

engines fitted with NiC3 cylinders.

II. APPLICABILITY

This Service Document updates the manufacturer's Instructions for Continued Airworthiness

(ICA).

A copy of this Service Bulletin must be inserted into the most current version of the applicable

Maintenance or Overhaul manuals (as listed in the ¡°Models Affected¡±) and should be added to the

appropriate engine cylinder maintenance section until the data is incorporated into the manual by

revision, or until the service document is retired.

CAUTION: Do not return any cylinder to service that does not

conform to the dimensional limits specified in this service document.

Use only NEW cylinder bore dimensions at engine overhaul. Service limits may be used to return

cylinders to service on engines that have not reached published TBO. Authorized oversize (AO)

NiC3 cylinders are not available.

Maintain piston ring gaps and cylinder dimensions within the specifications provided in this

Service Bulletin.

? Piston specifications are presented in Section 10-6 of M-0, Standard Practice

Maintenance Manual, ¡°Engine to Piston Cross Reference Table¡±.

? Piston rings (manufactured with alternate materials) are required to interface with the

NiC3 cylinder bore. Piston rings must be marked accordingly.

? Published TBO limits are not affected by the installation of NiC3 cylinders.

III. CYLINDER IDENTIFICATION

Cylinder design and type can by identified by the following:

? Part numbers are permanently marked on the base flange flat (Figure 1, typical).

? The serial number of the assembly is stamped on the bottom cylinder head cooling fin.

? Two silver stripes, parallel with the cylinder bore, are applied to the edge of the

cylinder head fins between push rod tubes to identify the cylinder bore is treated with

nickel carbide plating.

(5.250 Inch Cross-Flow Cylinder with Straight Barrel Fins Depicted)

IV. APPLICATION

NiC3 cylinder assemblies are available for the engines listed in Table 1, column 6. The NiC3

cylinder part numbers (columns 2 and 3) are optional aftermarket replacements for the throughhardened cylinder assemblies (column 4). NiC3 cylinder design underwent multiple

improvements in 2018, conforming barrel and piston ring dimensions to the through-hardened

products, allowing the same instructions and dimensional fits & limits to be used for either

product line. First generation NiC3 cylinder assembly dimensional specifications differ from the

through-hardened equivalent.

Verify the cylinder assembly part number (and revision) before checking any dimensions. For

cylinder assembly part numbers listed in Table 1, column 2; reference the cylinder, piston, and

piston ring dimensional limits in M-0, section 10-6 to install or repair the NiC3 cylinder

assemblies. If the cylinder assemblies are listed in Table 1, column 3 the instructions and

dimensional specifications in this service document must be used.

V. CYLINDER FITS & LIMITS

To determine cylinder bore circularity, measure first in the plane through the spark plug holes at

diameter ¡°F¡± in Figure 2; repeat the measurement at a right angle (90¡ã) to the first measurement

and subtract the smaller dimension from the larger. The difference must not exceed the circularity

limit specified.

WARNING

Verify the cylinder, piston, and piston ring assembly part

numbers are approved for the application. Installation of

incorrect, or mismatched parts will cause engine damage and

engine malfunction.
