5. Use the information above to generate bar charts on graph paper-one displaying your diet and a second bar chart showing the diet of an adult which could be your teacher or parents.

6. Use the nutritional information panel from cereal packets to identify the main nutrients contained in food.

7. What is the importance of water in our diet? Make a list of sources of water in your diet.

8. Complete the table below by identifying foods that are rich in a) Carbohydrate b) Proteins c) Fat d) Fibre

Lesson 2 (Food Test)

Test for Glucose

1. Place food substance under test in a test tube

2. Add Benedicts Solution (amount of Benedicts Solution? Use your discretion or speak to your teacher)

3. Place test tube containing food substance in water bath for 3 minutes at 100 degree Celsius

4. If the colour of test tube content changes to red\orange glucose is present.

Test B

1. Rub food substance under test against some filter paper, blank white paper or brown paper

2. Allow paper to dry

3. If a grease mark is present,

4. What is present in the food?

5. What food test is this?

Test C

1. Place food substance under test on a white tile

2. Add three to four drops of Iodine Solution

3. Did the colour changes to blue/black

4. If yes, what is present in the food?

5. What food test is this?

|Chemical Solution |Test for |

| | |

|Iodine | |

9. Food Tests Experiments: Make a list of health and safety requirements for these tests.

10. In using chemical tests to identify food substances in our diet, give the name of a chemical that is used in testing

a) Starch:

b) Proteins:

c) Sugar:

d) Fats:

HOMEWORK

Design an information leaflet for

a) Pregnant woman

b) Footballer

c) Builder

d) Teacher or a Solicitor

Showing good sources of nutrients, recommended daily allowance/intake for each nutrient and the importance or role of nutrients in their diet you have suggested.

OR

Design a poster for your Science classroom showing pictures of food nutrients, sources of food nutrients and the main role of Carbohydrates, Proteins, and Fats. On your poster clearly distinguish between a healthy diet and a healthy balanced diet.

Task II:

Build or construct a sequence of events using keywords and meaning from above commencing with feeding, followed by mechanical digestion, chemical digestion, absorption and ending with elimination of faeces.

Explain what happens to food as it passes through this tube and make links between keywords and the digestive system.

TASK III

Complete the table below showing how the complex food you eat is completely broken down into its most basic nature in the duodenum before absorption.

|Nutrient in Food |Broken down into |

|Proteins | |

|Fats | |

|Complex sugars | |

TASK IV

Indicate next to each statement True or False

a) Food is required by humans to grow and survive- T/ F

b) Food is the fuel in the body needed for biological reactions- T/F

c) Enzyme called lysozyme acts on the food in the mouth while it is chewed.- T/F

d) This is the second step in the process called digestion- T/F

e) Food broken down into smaller bits travels through the oesophagus towards the stomach- T/F

f) The stomach is also involved in the break down of food particles into smaller bits-T/F

g) The acid in the stomach breaks down the food into a semi-liquid state-T/F

h) Food is completely broken down into its most basic form in the Duodenum-T/F

i) Absorption starts in the Duodenum- T/ F

j) Proteins are broken down to Amino acids

k) Amylase is an enzyme produced by the saliva

l) Glucose is broken down to starch in the small intestine- T/ F

Your Task – Complete the table above using information from this table.

|Meat, Fish |Cereals, Potatoes, Pasta, Rice |

|Fried foods and some fast food or processed foods |Sugars in some foods |

|Nuts-(e.g Cashew nuts) |Fruits and Vegetables |

|Contain building materials for making glucose |Citrus fruits (e.g Oranges) |

|Scurvy |For growth and repairs of tissues |

|Anaemia |For warmth (keeping us warm-a means of insulation in our |

|Kwashiorkor |bodies, stored as energy under the skin) and providing energy. |

|Heart attack |For energy (a major source of energy) |

| |Keep us healthy and prevent diseases. |

TASK 7

1. Make a list of conditions under which the process of digestion can occur in humans

2. Suggests what might happen or how these factors might affect digestion if the conditions you have listed are not met.

3. What is the use of Acids in human digestive system?

4. What is the name of the acid in our stomach

5. What is the pH of acid in the stomach?

6. Distinguish between digestion and egestion

7. Why do we need fibres in our food?

8. How are the products of digestion transported to cells in our bodies?

FINAL TASK 8

Draw a concept map or a mind map showing connections between keywords or ideas you did come across in this topic. You may want to consult with your teacher before you start. Use resources from the internet, your science workbook or textbooks, magazines or newspapers to identify relevant/appropriate links between ideas, concept and keywords in your concept map. You might also want to discuss with classmates to see if they have different ideas from your one. Good luck as you begin your planning!
