SUMMARY OF TRAUMA CERTIFICATIONS

With the increased focus on trauma-informed care in recent years, child-serving professionals and agencies are increasingly pointing to trauma certifications as evidence of expertise working with traumatized populations. These certifications are offered by a number of different organizations and the criteria to achieve certification varies greatly from one certification to the next. Understanding the qualifications and training required for a particular certification can help referral sources, stakeholders, and funders, make informed decisions about the meaningfulness of the certification.

This resource provided an overview of general trauma certifications as well as certifications in a number of trauma-focused treatment models.

GENERAL CERTIFICATIONS

Certified Trauma Responder (CTR)

Minimum Criteria / Qualifications

o Member of ATSS o 40+ hours of experience in a trauma / crisis response role o 72 hours of crisis response related training; up to 8 hours may be on-

line o Supervisor recommendation

Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists (ATSS)

Certified Trauma Services Specialist (CTSS)

Certified Trauma Treatment Specialist (CTTS)

o Member of ATSS o 72 hours of trauma-specific training or education; up to 14 hours may

be on-line o Minimum of 1 year of experience in the field o Supervisor recommendation

o Member of ATSS o Graduate degree or clinical license o 500 hours of counseling experience, specific to psychological trauma o 190 hours of trauma-specific training and education, covering specific

content areas; up to 30 hours may be on-line o Letters of recommendation

Minimum Criteria / Qualifications

o Complete one of several on-line or in-person trainings (generally equivalent to 12 hours of training)

o Score at least 80% on the CCTP on-line assessment, demonstrating knowledge of 6 core principles

o Maintain certification by obtaining 6 trauma-related CEs per year

International Association of Trauma Professionals (IATP)

Certified Expert Trauma Professional (CETP)

o 12-week interactive course for mental health professionals ? consists of a weekly 90-minute webinar, covering a variety of trauma-related topics

o Maintain certification by obtaining 6 trauma-related CEs per year

Certified Non-Clinical Trauma Professional (CNTP)

o Complete the on-line Certified Non-Professional Trauma Professional course

o Score at least 80% on the CNTP online exam (40 of 50 questions correct)

o Maintain certification by obtaining 6 trauma-related CEs per year

Certified Clinical Child & Adolescent Trauma Professional (CATP)

Website is unclear on requirements. It appears process is similar to that for other certifications from IATP: o Complete on-line training module o Pass on-line assessment?

Certified Family Trauma Professional

o Complete the Certified Family Trauma Professional Intensive Training course offered by PESI (12.5 CE hours)

o Score at least 80% on the CFTP online assessment

IATP trainings are generally offered through , which is a national continuing education provider offering both in-person and on-line trainings.

Minimum Criteria / Qualifications

o Complete 5 live or on-line TLC trainings over a 6-month period. This includes 2 required trainings and 3 "electives."

o Pass Level 1 exam o Maintain certification by attending 6 hours of on-line or live training

per year.

National Institute for Trauma & Loss in Children (TLC)

Certified Trauma Practitioner ? Education ("CTP-E")

o Complete a specific series of 5 TLC trainings over a 6-month period. o Pass Level 1 exam o Maintain certification by attending 6 hours of on-line or live training

per year.

*This certification has been hosted by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR) several times, in order to make it available to rape crisis/sexual assault advocates in Pennsylvania.

Advanced Certified Trauma Professional ? Clinical ("ACTP")

o Level 1 Certification o Complete any 5 live or on-line TLC trainings o Pass Level 2 exam

On-line training and e-certification for TLC is provided through Starr Commonwealth. TLC is the purveyor of Circle of Courage and SITCAP ("Sensory Intervention for Traumatized Children, Adolescents, and Parents"). SITCAP-ART is recognized as a promising practice.

Certificate Program in Traumatic Stress Studies

Trauma Institute / Child Trauma Institute

Certificate in Trauma Therapy (CTT)

Minimum Criteria / Qualifications

o Post-graduate training program, intended for licensed professionals o 9-month program includes a morning seminar followed by group

clinical consultation each week (in Mass.) o Also available through PESI as an on-line, distance program

o Mental Health Professionals or advanced graduate students with an active caseload

o Completion of an in-person, experiential training program that includes lecture, demonstration, and in-class practice. Meets for 14 days (5 weekends) over the course of 9 months. Training provides 85 CEs.

This list is not exhaustive. Some colleges and universities also offer trauma-related certificate programs. The requirements of these programs vary.

Professional Requirements

Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

o Professionally licensed to practice mental health

o 2 years of post-graduate experience

1 ? Well-supported by research evidence

o Complete an approved training in EMDR (20 hours)

o 20 hours of EMDR consultation with an approved consultant after training; at least 10 hours must be 1:1 consultation

o Conduct a minimum of 50 EMDR sessions, with at least 25 clients

o Letters of recommendation pertaining to use of EMDR with clients

o Complete 12 hours of continuing ed in EMDR every 2 years

Training and consultation provided by EMDRIAapproved trainers/consultants

EMDRIA Certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Individuals who have completed the training, but are not certified, are considered "EMDR Trained." Certification is not required to practice EMDR.

Certification from: EMDR International Association (EMDRIA)

Prolonged Exposure (PE)

o Licensed therapist or working under the supervision of a licensed therapist

o 4 days (32 hours) of on-site training o Individual consultation for 2 PE cases, which

Training provided by staff at the Center for the Treatment & Study of Anxiety at U Penn, where the developer is based, and PE-certified supervisors
