INTRODUCTION

Beloved, we now turn our attention to the power source of the Christian’s life – which is the person of the Holy Spirit, who gives the believer the power to live the Christian life. He is the third personality of the Triune God and from the Day of Pentecost, He has fully indwelled all believers in Christ. Paul expresses to the church that the Holy Spirit makes all things new in the believer in order for us to live a sanctified life!

Anticipated Power Points:

• The Holy Spirit Gives the Christian a New Law. Romans 8:1-5

• The Holy Spirit Gives the Christian a New Life. Romans 8:6-13

• The Holy Spirit Gives the Christian a New Leader. Romans 8:14-17

OUTLINE

I. The Holy Spirit Gives the Christian a New Law. Romans 8:1-5

The opening phrase “There is therefore now” is a conclusion of the previous chapter’s instruction. Paul declared in Chapter 7 that the work of any individual to try to justify himself through the works of the flesh or even the perfect keeping of the Mosaic Law was impossible! Why? Because the Law of God is Holy (Romans 7:12) and since the fall of Adam, the human being has not had the ability to have a perfect life because sin dwells within us (Romans 7:21) and finds its strength in our flesh! Yet in the spirit, we who have received Christ know and desire to live righteously but find this a very challenging warfare (Romans 7:22-25). Beloved, all this leads us to our first point. We who are saved need a new law to operate in us, not the ability of the flesh to be an overcomer, but the person of the Holy Spirit to totally direct us. Now when this happens, we are blessed with having “no condemnation” against us!

A. The Old Law.

Under the Law of Moses and the very law of the human will, a person was always seeking but not finding peace and

agreement with God. The Mosaic Law declares the payment for sin is death (Ezekiel 18:4; Romans 6:23). There can never be satisfaction in the flesh to please God!

B. The New Law.

Under the auspices of the Holy Spirit, we find that through Christ we have peace with God (Romans 5:1). So the believer’s righteousness is not dependent on what he can do, but on what Jesus Christ has done! Isaiah 53:11 (“He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities”) surmises what Paul is expressing in Romans 8:3-5. God the Father can only find judicial satisfaction in His own sacrifice, our Lord Jesus Christ!

Therefore we who receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour can never attempt to find justification in our fleshly carnal ways, but must totally depend on Christ and walk or live after the law of the Spirit! Romans 8:2 tells us, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

II. The Holy Spirit Gives the Christian a New Life. Romans 8:6-13

Now Paul turns his attention to emphasize that we do not just operate under a new law, but that we are new creatures in mind and the activities of the body should demonstrate the change!

A. A new life in our minds. vss. 6-7

Paul, in Philippians 2:5 reminded the believers that we should operate in the mind of Christ. And so here he emphasizes to be carnally minded (that is, to think and operate according to mere fleshly tendencies) is death – separation from God spiritually, emotionally and eventually physically! A believer can never please God following their own whims and an unbeliever will never know God apart from being born of the spirit and blood of Christ.

B. A new life in our mortal bodies. vss. 8-13

E. C. Gillentine describes the mind of the mortal body in this fashion: “(1) It is death. (2) It is enmity against God. (3) It is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. (4) They that are in the flesh cannot please God….The believer is not in the flesh, that is, he is not controlled by the flesh, but he is in the Spirit and is controlled by the Spirit, because the Spirit of God dwells in him… Believers are not in debt to the flesh to live after the flesh, for to live after the flesh will bring good to no one, but it always brings harm. If a child of God lives continuously after the flesh, or in sin, he must expect to be taken out of this life, but if he by the Spirit overcomes the deeds and desires of the body he shall live to the glory of God.” (Read Acts 5:1-11 and I John 5:16-17.) So beloved, we who are saved and indwelt by the Spirit owe a debt of allegiance to His leadership.

III. The Holy Spirit Gives the Christian a New Leader. Romans 8:14-17

Two things stand out when we have the Spirit as our leader – Position and Privileges!

A. Position - According to verse 14, we who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons (children) of God, abiding in His compassion and care, recipients of God’s commands and open, if necessary, to His chastisement (Hebrews 12:5-8; I John 3:1-3).

B. Privileges are also ours according to vss. 15-17. Because the Holy Spirit is our new leader, He leads us to a wonderful intimate relationship with God through Christ, such that we can refer to Him as “Abba, Father”, which means “Poppa” or “Daddy”. Beloved, who would have ever believed that people like you and me could know such a wonderful privilege with the Almighty God! Thank God that all this is possible because the Holy Spirit gives us power to make all things new!

CLOSING

Are you living below the God standard in your life because you are trying to impress God with your own self-centered ability? Remember Romans 8:8, “So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.” We must then live by Romans 8:14, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
