6th GRADE SURVEY of the ARTS ~ Ms

6th GRADE THEATRE ARTS ~ Mrs. Eanes

6th grade Theatre Arts is a full year course designed to introduce students to the arts through the exploration of theatre. This class is performance oriented and our goal is promoting self-assurance in each student through interactive, creative communication. Classroom activities may include improvisation, characterization, acting, theatre history, stage makeup and other elements of drama.

*Members of this class are encouraged to participate in and audition for extra-curricular theatre activities throughout the year. Many classroom activities will prepare the student for these events. Monthly calendars are available with audition, participation, and rehearsal information. To participate, students must maintain an average of 70 or above in all classes and attend required rehearsals prior to the competition/performance. Extra-curricular theatre activities include speech & theatre competitions and play productions.

*Fees apply to extra-curricular activities, some activities are invitation only based on interest, skill and/or participation.

*Grades are divided into four categories: Participation (25%), Daily Work (25%), Quizzes (20%), and Presentations/Performances/Projects (30%). Late work is an initial 20% deduction with ten points deducted for each additional day work is late. Late work will not be accepted once the assignment has been graded and returned to the class unless the absences are excused through the Attendance office.

Please refer to the NEISD student handbook and Lopez grading policies for further details. Late work MUST be submitted directly to the teacher, do not place late work in the class basket. After the due date collection I will not be checking the basket for late work, it is the students’ responsibility to give late work to me.

* Any failing quiz grade may be corrected to 70 within three (3) days of being returned to the student. Corrections must be written on the original quiz and returned to the teacher for grading. *Only corrections presented in this format will be accepted! Presentations/Performances/Projects are not eligible for corrections so be sure these assignments are completed with precision and care, the grade is final in this category.

*Students will receive one copy of each worksheet, assignment sheet, form etc. in class for projects & work due. It is the students’ responsibility to keep these papers, if lost, it must be printed from my web site. Any work turned in must be on the printed form/worksheet, handwritten work will not be accepted as a substitute for a lost paper. Keep all paperwork labeled with your name and class period in your binder, extra copies will not be provided! Late work must be given directly to me, not placed in the class basket. Presentations/Projects/Performances are final, be sure to prepare your best work for these grades!

* Each student is expected to bring their binder to class every day and should have a folder or section designated for Theatre to organize notes, scripts, assignments, graded papers, etc. A separate folder just for theatre is also acceptable. A writing utensil is also required every day.

*Students are required to have a COMPOSITION book (no spirals) to be kept in the designated class box for the daily warm-up activity, “Thoughts on Theatre”.

Books are due in the classroom by Tuesday, September 4.

Students are expected to retrieve their “T.O.T.” book each day upon entering the classroom and immediately begin copying the terms/information on the screen. These terms & notes will be an integral part of their daily lessons. Approximately every three weeks, an open-book, 5 question quiz will be given over the daily “T.O.T.” information. Periodically, a daily work grade will be given for completed entries in the “T.O.T.” book. Points will be deducted for incomplete or incorrect entries. A binder for each course will be kept in the classroom with weekly printouts of the daily warm-ups for make-up “T.O.T” entries. A comprehensive, 10 question “T.O.T” quiz will be given at the end of the semester. Quizzes may be corrected: ½ credit will be given for each correction attached to the original quiz within three days of return. Students must use their own book for quizzes! All warm ups must be handwritten in the composition book, no printouts or phone photos will be accepted for use on quizzes or as the final project grade for the warm up book.

A project grade will be given at the end of each semester for the completed T.O.T book and the book will be returned to the student.

*All students are expected to attempt all activities to the best of their ability. Classroom behavior expectations are consistent with school and district policies and appropriate discipline procedures will be followed for any infractions. All students are expected to handle equipment, furnishings, props, costumes, and all items within the classroom and/or stage area with extreme care and only when specifically directed to do so. Proper audience etiquette is also expected of every student during all performances and applause of appreciation will be given at the conclusion of each performance as well. This is an elective class, the student has chosen to participate in theatre and therefore is expected to make positive contributions to the class and fellow students at all times. Rehearsal time is provided in class for each performance unit and memorization is required for all scripted scenes. Students may require additional work outside of class to prepare for memorized performances. Group, partner and solo work will be assigned throughout the year, in most cases the students choose their group or partner

*Absolutely no food, drink (except water), or GUM is allowed in the classroom or on stage at any time!

Each student will receive three restroom passes to be used for water and/or the bathroom during the semester. Only these passes may be used during theatre class, grade level hall passes are not accepted. A specific hall pass (nurse, library, office) may be provided by the teacher when necessary if the student has completed all work or an emergency situation arises.

An important key to success in this class and in all extra-curricular theatre activities is enthusiasm for performing!

This will be an exciting year on stage at Lopez Middle School!

If there are any questions the best way to reach me is by e-mail (ceanes@) or call the theatre office (210-356-5048) and leave a message! My teacher web page is also an excellent resource for information. All papers/forms given in out in class will be posted on my web page as well. Each student will receive one copy in class. If the student misplaces anything it is the students’ responsibility to print a replacement from my web site. All due dates apply to all work!
