Mission Statement

Northfield Middle and High School is a community of learners whose purpose is to maximize student learning. Students are challenged to realize the value of learning and to reach their potential in a safe, healthy, and respectful environment. At Northfield Middle and High School, we are committed to students becoming productive, independent, caring members of our democratic society.

The sixth grade teachers, with help from parents, work to help every student reach these goals.

Sixth Grade Curriculum Overview

Standards to be addressed

The two main standards that apply to all classes are:

Dependability and Productivity

~ attend school on a regular basis

~ complete assignments on schedule

~ participate in classroom & group discussions

~ select the tools that are appropriate for academic and or vocational tasks

Respect

~ students demonstrate respect for themselves and others

Core Classes:

Reading

~ You will need to read 25 books this year

~ We will have at least 4 class novels that we

work on in class

~Students will be provided with book maps at the

beginning of the school year. Every student must

complete a book map for each book read.

Reading Range of Text

Reading Strategies

Reading Accuracy

Reading Comprehension

SUMMER Reading

All students are expected to read 2 books, at their reading level, over the summer and complete one book jacket for each book. Teachers will explain this to the students during step up day in June.

Writing

~Writing is across the curriculum.

~We will work on public speaking/presenting, narrative writing, essays, grammar, letters, and poetry.

Writing Dimensions

Writing Conventions

Mathematics

We will be using a combination of a standards-based math program this year; Connected Mathematics, and a skills based math book.

integers, and proportions

Geometry and Measurement Concepts

~ symmetry, congruency, length, area, perimeter, angles

Statistics and Probability Concepts

Principles of Science

This year in science the themes are sound, water, earth, and space. Throughout the year we will be studying and using the scientific method. In the spring we will do a hands-on unit on ecology through visits to the Dog River.

Social Studies Standards:

Our themes for social studies will be geography,

North American Studies, and immigration.

School to Home Communication

It is important to us that good communication exists between school and home. To assist with this communication, we have incorporated the following tools:

1. Assignment Sheets: Students will be required to write their assignments on them. You should ask to see them daily.

2. Homework: Many of the students will be able to complete their work in school. If they do not, it is considered homework.

➢ It is best if the student has a special place designated for working with little interferences. This space should be equipped with pencils, a dictionary, a ruler, and good lighting.

➢ Even if not specifically assigned on the assignment sheet, students can always work on their independent reading.

3. Notice of Overdue Assignments: If a student is having a hard time handing in work on time, an email will be sent to the parents. This is to keep parents informed at all times. Late work that is not completed within a week of the due date will become a 0 in the grade book. Please check Tyler SIS. This is the best way to keep on top of your student’s work and grades. BRIDGES AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM will have afterschool tutoring available all year.

4. 3-Ring Binder: This contains daily communication between school and home. It also contains the weekly assignment sheet, and all active work. It is the book that students must have with them at ALL times. No loose papers! This must be kept organized!

5. Progress Reports: Progress Reports will be available electronically on Tyler Sis four times a year between report cards.

6. Report Cards: Report cards are sent home four times a year. A calendar will be sent home to let you know when to expect them.

7. Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences: Parent Conferences will be held twice a year.

8. Informal Communications: Notes, phone calls, requests for meetings and school visits are available for parents at any time.

School Lockers and Locks:

• You will be assigned two lockers. One will be in the sixth grade area and one will be in the locker room for P.E. The school will provide a master lock for the Sixth Grade lockers at a cost of $5.00. You must use the school locks for this area. You will need to purchase a lock for the PE lockers on your own. Do NOT tell your locker combination to anyone.

Field Trips

• Sixth grade class trips are a tradition and they support our curriculum.

Students will help to decide the trips that we will make. Traditional trips have included: Winter Survival Training at Norwich, The Dog River, Middle Level Paine Mountain Hike, Silver Lake and Memorial Park.

• In some instances we feel an individual would benefit from a parent attending a trip. For the safety of all students, teachers have the option to require a parent attend any trip. Advance notice will be given.

Fund Raising Events

• Class trips are funded by individual grades. The sixth grade participates in several fund raising activities:

1. 6th grade students will host a middle level dance; time will be announced.

2. American Flatbread fundraiser: Students will be selling this organic product that will be made immediately after orders are placed and then frozen for pickup.

Community Volunteers

• We welcome community members into our rooms. We have had successful tutorial and enrichment programs run by volunteers. If you would like to volunteer some time, please tell us of your topic interest.

Class Meetings

• These are meetings where we celebrate and recognize students for their achievements. We also use this time to address student and teacher concerns.

• In addition to these meetings, we also have PBIS meetings every Monday to celebrate students who exemplify our Middle Level PBIS model.

Supplies needed for class:

(Starting in the middle level, paper and pencils are no longer provided by the school)

Essential

~ 3 ring binder

~ lined notebook paper

~ pencils (many of them)

~ erasers

~ 6 subject dividers or pocket folders

~ pencil pouch that fits into your 3 ring binder

~ PE combination lock
