Course Objective:

To help students master 6th grade Sunshine State Standards using problem-based activities and learning through real-world contexts.

Instructional Objectives:

By the end of this course, successful students will:

A. Master basic operations involving fractions, decimals and percents.

B. Represent most problems using algebraic notation, including variables.

C. Solve math problems in the areas of number sense, measurement, geometry, algebraic thinking, and data analysis and probability.

D. Improve organizational and study skills.

Evaluation Policy

Every nine weeks students and parents receive a progress report showing the student’s achievement in his/her Math class. Classwork and homework are graded based on effort and completion. Late work will be accepted for half credit.

Classroom Rules

• Respect school property, yourself, others and their things at all times.

• Communication of any kind is prohibited when any other person is speaking.

• Raise your hand for permission to speak.

• Arrive on time and be prepared for all classes.

• Always ask for permission to get out of your seat.

Required Supplies: Each student must arrive on time with the following supplies or they may be counted tardy.

• Pencil

• Red Pen

• Math Composition Notebook

• Homework Folder

• Planner

Consequences:

If your child chooses to break a rule...

1. Verbal warning

2. Designated seat in classroom

3. Parent Contact/ detention

4. Student sent to office with a referral.

Attendance

Tardies: Each student is expected to quietly enter the room on time with all of their materials or they will be counted tardy. If a student is tardy excessively, the consequences as listed above will be enforced.

Absentee Policy: In order to receive full credit, students are responsible for making up any missed classwork and homework assignments. For an excused absence, students will receive one day to makeup any missed classwork/homework in addition to the number of days they were absent. For example, if a student misses one day of school, they will receive two days to makeup an assignment. It is the student’s responsibility to find out from their study buddy what they missed or check the While You Were Out binder.
