Rucker Boulevard Elementary Math 6 Syllabus: SCHEDULE AND CONCEPTS

Academic Year 2012-2013

The following mathematical concepts will be covered. THIS IS ONLY A GUIDE AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

1st 9 Weeks

1 week: Exploring Place Value, Geometry, U.S. Customary Measurement

2 weeks: Decimal Operations including Metric System Measurement

5 weeks: Fraction Operations

2nd 9 Weeks

5 weeks: Ratios, Proportions, Percents, U.S. Customary Measurement Conversions, Scale

2 weeks: Geometry

2 weeks: Understanding the Coordinate Plane

3rd 9 Weeks

3 weeks: Expressions and Equations

3 weeks: Area and Perimeter

3 weeks: Data, Statistics, Probability

4th 9 Weeks

2 weeks: Functions and Inequalities

4 weeks: Surface Area and Volume

GEOMETRY AND MEASUREMENT FLASHCARDS

Students will receive these the first week of school. Students will be “pop quizzed” on these flashcards at teacher’s discretion. Beginning the third week of school, students should be prepared to test on flashcard materials at any time throughout the school year. Pop quizzes will be for a grade.

CLASSWORK

Students should keep all math assignments in their math binder only. Assignments given in class daily should be completed and checked by student. If an assignment was given in class but not completed in class it is for homework.

HOMEWORK

Students will need to complete and check the accuracy of classroom assignments on a daily basis. They are required to keep all math assignments in their math binder. Students should also study measurement flashcards, math vocabulary, and math notebook materials.

MATH NOTEBOOK

The math notebook is intended to be a tool to increase student success in the classroom. Students are accountable for keeping all math assignments and resources in their math notebook at all times. This includes…

• Small-Group Activities

• Projects

• Vocabulary

• Flashcards

The teacher will provide guidance for organization of math assignments and resources in the notebook. Students will receive a glossary at the end of each nine weeks as a quick reference for the information already learned. Students should not remove math materials from the notebook unless teacher collects the information as a grade.

GRADES

Test Grades: One test grade will be given weekly (this does not include flashcard “pop quizzes”).

Weekly Math Notebook Grades: One math notebook grade will be give weekly. Teacher will choose items to grade at random. Students will not be notified in advance of the items that will be taken for grade. Students should complete all assignments to the best of their ability. Grades will be determined by averaging grades for all quizzes, homework, projects, classwork/ activities, and tests. Group problem solving activities and class participation will count as one grade. Homework grades are based on completion. Parent signatures will be required on the four and one-half week and the nine week computer generated reports each semester that are provided by the teacher.

Weights: Tests 40 %

Quizzes 10 %

Classwork/Partner Work/Activities 45 %

Homework 5 %

MAKE-UP POLICY

Each student is responsible for getting his/her make-up assignments.
