Course Description:

The curriculum offers students the opportunity to experience real-world applications, hands-on labs and interdisciplinary investigations. All students will be actively engaged in developing mathematical understandings in real and relevant contexts. By the end of 6th grade, students will:

Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100

·         Find the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12

·         Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1-100 with a

common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor.

·         Interpret and compute quotients of fractions

·         Solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions using visual fraction models

and equations to represent the problem.

·         Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm

·         Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard algorithm

for each operation.

Textbook: Carnegie Learning – Grade 7 (Cost: $17.00__). If the textbook is lost, stolen, or damaged (missing barcode), it is the student’s responsibility to pay for the book before a replacement book is issued. In the event that the lost book is found, please retain all receipts. Students are also highly encouraged to register for access to the online textbook at resources.. There are PDFs of the various student texts so students may print additional copies of assignments if necessary. Instructions for accessing the online texts were sent home with students on the first day of school. Please contact me if you did not receive them.

A: 100-90 B: 80-89 C: 71-79 D: 70 (Partially met the expectation)

F: 69 and below (Unsatisfactory; did not meet the expectation)

Weighted Averages:

Classwork: 30%

Tests/Quizzes: 40%

Homework: 15%

Final: 15%

• Homework: Homework is expected to be completed as assigned. Students will be assigned

Homework almost every night. If a student comes to class without completing his/her homework, he/she will be given a “0” for that assignment. There are no exceptions to this homework policy, and it will be effective Aug. 7th.

• Tutorials: Tutorials are offered on Monday and Tuesday from 8:10 to 8:400 AM in room 644. Students must have me sign their agenda BEFORE Wed afternoon. Students must also sign-in and out when they attend tutorials. Parents are expected to pick-up their child promptly at 5pm after tutorial is over in the parent carpool/pick-up circle.

• Make-up work for Excused Absences: Previously announced work, such as homework, quizzes, tests, and other major assessments are due the day the student returns. For each day’s excused absence, student will have one day to make up missed work. If a student is absent under extenuating circumstances, special arrangements can be made to make up work. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK THE “MAKE-UP WORK CRATE” IN THE CLASSROOM AND SUBMIT WORK WITHIN THE APPLICABLE TIME PERIOD. If no work is submitted after this period, teacher will enter a “0” in the gradebook for all missing assignments.

• Academic honesty: Receiving or giving information for an assignment is cheating, and when caught in the act, students will not receive credit nor receive the opportunity for a chance for make up. Plagiarism is not acceptable. If a student takes information from the Internet or any printed resource without a citation, it is considered plagiarism and will result in a reduction in grade. Furthermore, a discipline referral to the 6th grade Assistant Principal will be forwarded.

Think of yourself as a guide rather than your child's teacher. You can help by asking questions and listening. You may also help by visiting the online resources and encouraging your child to take advantage of the tutorials, interactive activities, and other online resources listed above. For those without home internet access, check with your child's classroom teacher for suggestions.
