MID-TERM STUDY GUIDE
WHAT TO EXPECT:
This mid-term will cover material in Chapters 1 through 9 in the textbook. Questions on the mid-term will be a combination of fill-in-the-bank, true/false, multiple choice, and short answer. In addition to the extra credit opportunity below, the exam will also contain extra credit questions. There will be plenty of opportunity to earn an “A” grade on this exam.
This exam will count as TWO test grades. Your exam preparation will also be included in class participation and homework grades.
We will spend time in-class reviewing the material and answers to the questions below (either as a whole class or in small groups) upon our return. However, should you have questions during the Christmas holiday or other non-school hours, please feel free to e-mail me at rhaeberle@ or spcssocialstudies@ and I will answer your question as soon as practically possible.
Given the timing of this exam, we will expect to cover 2 to 3 chapters a day and you should expect to jump full-swing into exam preparation mode immediately upon return from Christmas break.
This exam is scheduled for a two-hour block on Friday, January 8, 2010 (the Friday of the first week of our return to school).
HOW SHOULD I START STUDYING?
** DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. Cramming rarely improves a grade.
** Answer the “Things to Know” questions below by identifying one or two main ideas for each question. While many of these questions can be answered in great detail, the short answer questions on the exam will require only two to four quality sentences for full credit. Spend your time developing and learning a short, concise and well-worded answer.
** Review past tests. There were 4: Chps 1-2; Chps 3-4; Chps 5-6, and Chps 8-9.
** Go over the Review pages at the end of each Chapter. (pages 28, 40, 52, 64, 76,
91-92, and 104)
** Review your journal notes
** After answering the questions below, always ask yourself, “do I have a basic understanding of the topic?” If not, go back to that particular section and re-read the text.
** If you do those six things, you should do very well. There are no *tricks* on this exam. You DO NOT (and should not) need to re-read the entire text to do well.
STUDY JOURNAL / STUDY GUIDE COMPLETION – EXTRA CREDIT
To encourage you to not wait until the last minute to begin studying, I am offering an additional extra credit opportunity enabling you to earn up to 10 points towards your mid-term exam grade.
What do you need to do?
1. Keep a record of the time you spent studying for the exam. For each study session, identify the date, the amount of time and the area of material studied in table format.
For example:

1/2/10 30 min. Reviewed vocabulary and Things to Know for Chaps. 1 – 3; answered questions on study guide and made flash cards
1/3/10 20 min. Quizzed self with flash cards; answered questions for Chapters 4 and 5 in the
study guide
2. Prepare answers to the questions on the study guide. These responses should be written separately on loose-leaf paper (or typed on the computer – your preference). Your paper should contain the proper St. Paul heading and the subject line “Mid-term Study Guide Responses.” You should include both the questions and the responses on your paper. I will not accept scribbled answers on your study guide itself for extra credit.
3. Turn in your journal, your answers to the study guide, and any other study materials you generated during your mid-term study ON THE MORNING OF THE EXAM. Do not include old notes, outlines, or cards.
