Esperanza Rising - Ms. Catherine's 5th Grade Class
Esperanza Rising
At Home Final Projects
This project will be an at home two-week project. All your work will be completed at home. Make sure you choose an option you feel comfortable completing at home and on your own. Make sure you have the materials for that option. If you have any questions, ask your teacher during the school day for advice. We will be sharing our creations at the end of the two weeks.
1. Become Esperanza- Write a Letter
Imagine that when Esperanza was in America she was allowed to write a letter to Marisol. Write a letter using correct letter format (remember Esperanza was well-educated). Be sure your letter describes Esperanza’s feelings about the new life she has in California. You are free to choose the time frame of the letter…ie. when she first arrived in California with details of her travels, after Mama becomes sick, after the striker’s organize, after Abuelita arrives from Mexico, or an imaginary time after the ending of the book.
Requirements:
At least two pages (typed or written neatly in pen on loose leaf). It should look like a published piece with little to no grammar or spelling errors.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
Does the letter include specific events? Does the letter truly show Esperanza’s feelings rather than just tell what happened? Is letter formatted correctly? Is the paper free of spelling and punctuation errors?
2. Flash Forward to the Future-10 Years Later
Write the next chapter! It is 10 years later, Esperanza is now in her twenties, an adult. What is happening in her life now? How has she grown up? Making sure your events bring the story to a realistic and logical conclusion. Be sure to include specific details by showing what happens rather than just telling what you imagine will take place.
Requirements:
At least two pages (typed or written neatly in pen on loose leaf). It should look like a published piece with little to no grammar or spelling errors.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
Does the ending flow logically from previous events? Do paragraphs flow together nicely? Did I use dialogue? Did I write in 3rd person as if I am observing the story (Use he, she, it)? Is the paper free of spelling and punctuation errors?
3. "Rising" Rose: Esperanza's Character Growth
Just like roses grow and bloom over time, Esperenza grew and bloomed into a beautiful young girl. Use one of her father's roses to represent how Esperenza rose and overcame the obstacles that stood in her way throughout the story.
Requirements:
-On large paper or a poster, draw a rose with 8 petals, stem, 8 thorns, and 2 leaves (it should fill the entire page!)
-Write a an obstacle/problem Esperenza faced on each thorn
-Write the solutions to each obstacle/problem on the petals
-Write a pattern you noticed and why it happened in the story
-Write the author's message or story theme on the stem
**If you would like to make a 3-dimensional paper rose you can!**
How to Make Rose Websites:
Questions to Ask Yourself:
Do my problems and solutions match up? Does the theme or author's message connect to the problems and solutions Esperanza faced? Did I explain why the patterns are happening in the story?
