Course Description

Seventh grade Language Arts integrates conceptual and skill-based learning through the study and practice of reading, writing, and the conventions of language and grammar. Students learn, practice, and master a set of skills and perspectives that are embedded and continuous throughout the units and that are central to success in the English Language Arts classroom. As each level builds upon previously acquired skills, the students are on their way to becoming critical thinkers as well as independent readers, writers, and learners. Our curriculum is based on the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards () and will prepare students for the new Georgia Milestones Assessment. These standards provide year-long learning goals and establish clear expectations for student work.

Each semester is divided into 9 week units during which students will learn, practice, and master skills and knowledge that will allow them to not only succeed in Language Arts, but also see how the subject relates to their life and the world around them.

Permission to Take Photos or Videos for Classroom Use

We (7B teachers: Mrs. Altheimer, Mrs. Sigmon, Ms. Price and Ms. Chamness) would like to be able to take digital photos or videos of students for use in the classroom. Photos/videos might be used to illustrate a student’s own work or our professional portfolios or presentations. They may also appear on the class website. The students’ names will not be identified in such uses.

Students have the right to refuse to allow their images to be used and to ask for them to be erased immediately. If a student does so, there is no penalty for him/her, and the decision will not affect his/her grade or standing in the class.

I understand that 7B teachers listed above may be taking photos/videos during the school year that may include my child’s image. I give permission to 7B teachers to use my child’s image in classroom projects or professional portfolios/presentations/grant proposals as described above. I understand that I will not be compensated for use of my child’s image. I understand that my child can refuse to have his/her picture taken and that he/she will not be penalized in any way for that choice.

Permission to Borrow from Mrs. Altheimer’s ELA Classroom Library

I (Mrs. Altheimer, have a small-but-growing collection of young adult literature and other interesting books that my students may borrow with parental permission. I have not read all of these books. While I believe that these books have merit, some may include mature content, such as references to teen pregnancy, drugs, child abuse, or violence. Recognizing that parents have different preferences about reading matter for their children, I am asking you to check and sign below according to your preference.
