Time and Timeline Lessons

Part 1: Focus: Things were Different in the Past.

-Preview: A story about a Japanese man who visits American and comes to love it as a second home.

*Ask students: For those of you who moved here, how did you get here? How long did it take?

*This story takes place in the past.

*People who came to America back then traveled by ship.

--Japan to America: 3 weeks!

*In the past: People wore different clothes and used different kinds of technology.

-Purpose: Look for these things: Different clothes and technologies.

-Read Book

-Ask students: What kinds of things did you see that were different more than a 100 years ago?

-Reminder: Things like clothes and technology were different in the past.

Part 2: Focus: Order Events by Using a Timeline

-Grandfather’s Journey tells the story of a man’s life. The author showed it by putting it in a book. A person who studies history – a “historian” – could show it by using a special tool called a “timeline.”

*Timelines tell a story by putting events in “chronological order.”

--Start with what happened first, then second

-Steps (demonstrate to students):

1) Draw a line.

2) (Display pictures from book in random order.) Together we’ll put important events that happened to grandfather on the line in chronological order.

*Ask students: Would someone like to put what happened first on the line?

--Do we agree?

*Continue until timeline is complete and pictures are put in order.

-We told the story of Grandfather’s Journey by using a timeline and putting each even in chronological order.

-Most important timeline you can make is the story of your life!

-Homework:

1) Sit down with (parent, grandparent, brother, sister) and list important memories

*Demonstrate

2) Number in chronological order (Put a 1 by the memory that came first…)

3) Write each memory on the lines.

4) Draw a picture or put a picture of each memory.

5) Bring your homework back to share!
