Skills for Fingerspelling

1. Hand Position:

• Palm of the hand faces the audience

• See lip movement

2. Flow and Rhythm:

• Slight pause between words

• Do not push or bounce the letters

• Some letters and combinations are easily made than others

3. Lip Movement:

• Words you fingerspell should be spoken simultaneously

• Individual letters should not be vocalized

• One and two syllable words, no problem. Longer words are a challenge. Try breaking up into syllables

4. Double Letters:

• Double letters formed by hands opened slightly before repeating the second letter

• “C” and “L” already opened – simply move from left to right with a very slight bounce

5. Reading Fingerspelling:

• Should be read the same way you read, not letter by letter

• Read syllables or words as units

6. Practice Hints:

• Begin with two and three letter words. Increase the length of words, breaking them down into syllables

• Practice using lip movement while fingerspelling
