The idea that government gets its power or authority from the people. It states that the people have the right to alter or get rid of their government if it is not carrying out its duties properly.

The government only has the powers that are given to it by the Constitution and that everyone in the country must obey the law set out by the Constitution.

The Constitution divides the National Government into 3 branches. Congress, or the legislative branch makes the laws, the executive branch, headed by the President, carries out the laws. The judicial branch, composed of the Supreme Court, explains and interprets the laws.

This is a safeguard against the abuse of power in the Central government. Each branch of the National government has the power to check, or limit, the actions of the other two.

The division of power between the National government and the State governments. It sets aside Delegated powers for the National government, Reserved powers for the State governments, and Concurrent powers that are shared by the National and State governments.

Instead of taking part directly in the government, citizens elect representatives to carry out their will. Once in office, representatives vote according to their own judgment. However, they must remain open to the opinions of the people they represent.

The constitution protects things such as the freedom or speech, freedom of religion, and a trial by a fair and impartial jury. These are protected under the first 10 Amendments.
