Unprecendented Development Opportunities
Don Burroughs, Bill Zehler, Ron Wyzynski, and other instructors are planning abundant ASEP, CAP, and IMPACT courses and clinics throughout the Ohio Valley Region.
The American Sport Education Program's (ASEP) volleyball course is a very useful tool for all club directors as well as for coaches and parents, covering issues such as club philosophy, coaches, parents, risk, finances, and events. The ASEP training course is a requirement all Ohio Valley Region clubs directors within their first year of membership. This year's ASEP course will be offered on December 6, 8:30AM-12:30PM, at Westerville South High School. Additional information, consequences for clubs who are not ASEPaccredited, and online registration are found at juniors/coaching/asep.php.
IMPACT, an acronym for Increased Mastery and Professional Application of Coaching
Looking over this year's ASEP manual, Don Burroughs and Bill Zehler discussed aspects of the December ASEP course during a break at the Westerville board meeting.
Theory, is a 4-hour course for the volunteer or beginning coach. Emphasis is on drill development, principals of learning skills,

OVR The Block
Executive Director's Commentary
Dear Members, The OVR is now into its second season of online registration. Last year approximately 75% of our members used the online system for individuals and teams. Our goal is to increase that this year to 90%. This system not only saves time but eliminates the need to hire someone to enter your information into the database. Once you enter the system and receive your registration numbers the next responsibility is to send in the fees in a timely manner, usually 7-10 days. The region will again as necessary notify team representatives of overdue payments. Remember that you or your team(s) may not participate in sanctioned events or clinics or accept officiating assignments until payment is received. In a few weeks the region will host in various venues its preseason informational officials', coaches' and directors' clinics. The December 6th kickoff event at Westerville South High
School is an excellent place to connect on these areas. This clinic is very important for new team directors, junior tournament directors and junior coaches who need IMPACT certification. If you can't attend, please send a representative from your club. Although the OVR website is perhaps the best of the 39 regions, there's nothing like joining together as a group and meeting in person many of the OVR officers and staff. I'm sure that they'll have the answers to your questions or concerns. As always, the OVR-elected leadership has planned and organized an excellent season of volleyball activities. Now all we need is for you to join us.
Sincerely, Ronald J. Wyzynski Executive Director / CEO Ohio Valley Region, Inc. USA Volleyball

Corner
Eligibility I want to encourage all parents and athletes to become familiar with the Eligibility Rules/Policies of their governing High School Athletic Association. In Ohio, your daughter could lose her eligbility if: 1. She is coached by any member of her 2003 high school coaching staff, including volunteers, or 2. She practices or plays with more than 2 other members of her 2003 high school program. If you violate these policies the OVR will report you and the coaches involved to the OHSAA. The OVR works closely with the OHSAA to protect our members from these unethical practices.
Background Checks USA Volleyball is close to finalizing the cost and procedures for the required background check program, to be activated
for the 2004/2005 season. All members in a supervisory status with a juniors' program will be required to submit to this background check. Refusing to comply will deny you membership in any programs sanctioned by USA Volleyball. The cost of the program will be assessed to the club for coaches, club directors, volunteers, and chaperones. A satisfactory rating must be reported before membership is permitted. All checks must be approved by the selected investigating organization, sanctioned by USA Volleyball. Individuals' privacy will be protected when and if an individual is denied membership.
It is my hope that many of our directors currently screen all their staff.
I hope that if situations arise that appear to be questionable, each of you will not hesitate to report them immediately to an OVR officer. The quality of your program is a direct reflection on USA Volleyball and the OVR.
Respectfully, Bob Price Commissioner & President Ohio Valley Region, Inc. USA Volleyball
Club-Hosted IMPACT Clinics
To provide additional opportunities for coaches to meet their IMPACT certification requirements, clubs may host their own IMPACT clinics. Club-hosted IMPACT clinics may be held no earlier than January.
The cost of the clinic would be $30 per coach in attendance (no minimum or maximum number required, just make sure your facilities will accommodate everyone), payable to Ohio Valley Region. In addition, $75 must be paid directly to the IMPACT cadre presenting the clinic. You may contact any of the instructors listed below to determine their availability. To schedule your clinic, contact Don Burroughs (burroughs@, 419-629-8103) with the date, location, time and the name of the instructor you have found to present your clinic. See juniors/coaching/impact_club.php for additional details.

Juniors' Tournament Update
Tom Kohl, Juniors' Tournament Director
Thank you to those tournament directors that have applied online or sent their Applications for Sanction for the 2003-2004 season. We currently have 402 sanctioned tournaments (as of 10/31/03.) To those tournament directors that haven't completed their Applications for Sanction, please go to juniors/sanction/ as soon as you know your plans.
Please be advised that all tournament directors must be members of USA Volleyball. Online registration can be completed at register/. Contact Ron Wyzynski (wyzynski@, 1-888-8739478) or Nick Nystrom (nystrom@) for registration information. Any tournament director not registered for the 2003-2004 season will not have their tournament listed at the OVR website and will lose their tournament sanction until they have registered. The online Juniors' tournament schedule will be available to membership November 30. My goals for this season are as follows: 1. Ensure the quality of tournament facilities and play. 2. Online reporting of tournament results 3. Power Challenge and Bid Tournament organization As I sanction tournaments, I will e-mail copies of the Procedures and Rules for Girls Regular Season Tournaments and Checklist of Tournament Procedures. Any additional forms you need to conduct your tournament can be found at juniors/tournament_packet/. All parties involved in an OVR-sanctioned tournament ? tournament directors, referees, and coaches ? must be informed of tournament procedures and rules to ensure consistency of play and reporting of results. Should you have any suggestions, please e-mail me at kohl@. Again, thanks for your help this past season. I look forward to your cooperation in the 2004 season.
