Queensland Weightlifting Association wishes a Merry Christmas to all its members and their families.

An Olympic Experience

By Ian Moir

Even before the first swimmer hit the water, the first runner took their mark, or the first weightlifter stepped on to the platform, the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games was being hailed as the best ever, and although it is the only Olympics that I have ever been to, I don’t doubt it for a minute.

From the dawn of new year’s day, for many of us 2000 was the year of the Sydney Olympics. All the indicators were there – the Test Event held in the Olympic weightlifting venue in March; the Olympic Team Selection Trials in June; a stream of overseas athletes including weightlifters, gymnasts and cyclists from Britain, weightlifters from New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Palau, and hammer throwers from Estonia and Slovakia training at the Cougars club; Latvian weightlifters training at the Sunshine Coast weightlifting club; and Norwegian weightlifters in Toowoomba. But still, the realisation that something huge was about to happen only came to me on the morning of September 13 at Brisbane airport, where I kept bumping into acquaintances from the sporting fraternity who, like me, were heading to Sydney to play a part in the biggest event in Australia’s sporting history.

I’ve been to Sydney many times, often for weightlifting competitions. But the city seemed so different during those few weeks in September. It was as if every one of the millions of people there had only one purpose in mind – to support and celebrate the Olympic Games.

As I stepped off the plane in Sydney, I prepared myself to be consumed by the chaos that had been predicted by a host of doomsayers in the media. It never happened. I was directed by clear signage and friendly SOCOG volunteers to the accreditation processing point in the terminal. With the accreditation validation process completed within a few minutes, I collected my luggage without delay and was again directed to the appropriate area to await transportation. It was at this point that there was some hint of a problem. I was told that there was a shortage of busses and the SOCOG attendant apologetically informed me that a car would arrive in about ten minutes to pick me up. Now, maybe I’m not used to VIP treatment, but waiting ten minutes to be chauffeur driven in a brand new car from Sydney airport to the city doesn’t seem to me to be much of an inconvenience.

The accommodation for weightlifting’s National Technical Officials was the Unilodge Hotel in Ultimo, an easy 30 minute walk from the weightlifting venue in Darling Harbour, and after returning from the Uniform Distribution Centre with the various bits and pieces of official clothing, I set about tracking down some of the other dozen or so QWA members who had volunteered to work at the Games. Peter Thomsen and Lawrie Townsend had attended a training session at Darling Harbour earlier that day but were flying home to tie up some loose ends at work before returning for the start of the weightlifting competition. Mike Keelan’s position with the Sydney Olympic Broadcasting Organisation required him to be on deck at the venue late into the night, so that left Tim Oberg, Paul Wheeler and me to reconnoiter the area on that first night. Our mission – to investigate the facilities of numerous establishments in order to identify one or two of sufficient standard to provide refreshments of suitable quality that could serve as a base for R&R in the coming weeks. In other words, a pub crawl.

In the couple of days prior to the start of the competition there were various meetings, orientation sessions and training sessions to attend, as well as what I rate as the most spectacular experience of the whole Sydney Olympics – the Opening Ceremony. Mike and I were provided with tickets to the “Official’s Stand” at Stadium Australia, which was right on the half-way line, directly below where IOC supremo Juan Antonio Samaranch sat, and we didn’t hesitate to head for the front row. Maybe we didn’t have the best view of the “show” from down there next to the track, but that didn’t matter. We could have positioned ourselves higher in the stand, but Mike and I had decided that we weren’t just going to be spectators, we were going to be as much a part of this thing as possible. We stood and sang the national anthem with gusto (we even knew the words!) and when the Aussie team marched passed, we could see our friends and cheer them and, more importantly, they could see us. Anthony Martin later told me, “I couldn’t believe it when I saw you guys there. It was great”.

The next ten days were witness to the most amazing weightlifting event imaginable. From the milestone of the first women’s session to the drama and sadness of the great Suelymanoglu’s bomb-out, and the unforgettable battle between Rezazadeh and Weller that resulted in two world records in the snatch and an incredible 472.5kg world record total for the eventual Olympic Super Heavyweight Champion, Rezazadeh.

When the call for volunteers for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Weightlifting came early in 1999, I didn’t hesitate to apply. At the time I didn’t know what position I might end up with, and didn’t really care, as long as I could be somewhere close to the action. As it turned out, I was privileged to be appointed as a Technical Official and my work station was located right in the thick of things – the warm up room. Along with the other QWA members who assisted at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, including Mike Keelan, Peter Thomsen, Scott Robinson, Lawrie Townsend, Tim Oberg, Paul Wheeler, Peter Foster, Wes Cassidy and Rube Howes, I will cherish the memory of those two weeks in September for a long time to come.

2000 QWA Annual Awards

No matter whether you consider that the year 2000 marks the start of the 21st century or the end of the 20th century, the past 12 months has been an extraordinary time for the QWA. In a year dominated by that spectacular event in Sydney (no, not the G & L mardi gras, I’m talking about the celebration of excellence in NORMAL pursuits – the Olympics) the QWA has continued to develop and grow. We had more lifters on the platform this year, conducted two major events, and more of our lifters and coaches represented Australia.

On the 16th of December, a number of the faithful gathered to review the achievements of our members at the annual QWA Awards ceremony.

Beginning as we traditionally do with the awards for athletes, the Rookie of the Year went to Ben Turner. Ben joined the Cougars club after participating in the Telstra Lift Clean & Jerk competition at school and after only a few months he achieved C grade and broke Queensland under 16 & under 18 records.

The Best Under 14 Female award went once again to Rachel Trigger. Rachel won the Queensland under 16 championship and the Australian under 16 championship and set new Queensland under 16 records along the way. The Best Under 14 Male was another Queensland and Australian under 16 champion, Joel Wilson. Joel also set more Queensland under 16 records this year.

In the Under 17 Female category, Deborah Lovely was the winner. Deborah won the Australian under 20 championship and set state and national under 18 records. She also represented Australia for the first time, placing 3rd in the Oceania Junior Championships. The Best Under 17 Male was another young lifter showing great promise for the future – Damon Kelly. Damon won the Australian under 18 championship and set new state records.

The Best Under 20 Female was no surprise. Amanda Phillips represented Australia at four championships this year, including the Olympic Games. She is the current Australian and Oceania Junior Champion, and she set new state, national and Oceania junior records. The Best Under 20 Male also represented Australia in 2000. Jason Power won bronze at the Millennium Youth Games and set new Queensland and Australian under 18 records.

Kristie Amadio was the Most Improved Female, topping the QWA “Forbes Ranking” list for women. Kristie was also the Queensland champion in under 16, under 18, under 20 and open age divisions and the national under 20 champion. The Most Improved Male lifter was Ken Chandler. Ken added 75kg to his best total this year, achieved B grade and represented Queensland for the first time at the Australian Open Championships.

The final two awards to be announced for lifters were the Best Senior Female and Best Senior Male. Melissa Bethune won the female’s trophy. Melissa retained her Elite grading in 2000 and represented Australia at the Nauru Cup Tournament and the Oceania Championships where she placed 2nd. The Best Senior Male lifter, Craig Wegert, put in a consistent performance over the year and won the Queensland championship and came 4th at the Australian Open Championships.

On now to the awards for the individuals and organisations who, through their efforts, provide the opportunities for our athletes to progress and excel.

The Novice Coach of the Year was awarded to Margaret Bauer of Toowoomba. Margaret began coaching this year and since ceasing her own competitive career, has enthusiastically focussed her attention on coaching a number of young lifters in her club. Margaret’s determination to contribute to weightlifting is evident and she makes a valuable addition to the coaching ranks of the QWA.

Miles Wydall was presented with the award for Best Club Coach. Miles has been coaching continuously for 6 years, regularly giving up to 20 hours a week as a volunteer coach at the Cougars club. Miles currently coaches 15 lifters including beginners, national champions, state and national record holders, under sixteen’s, seniors and masters. He was selected as a coach of the Queensland teams at the National U18 & U16 Championships and the National Open & U20 Championships in 2000.

The QWA Officiator of the Year was Debra Keelan. Debra is a National grade weightlifting referee and International Category 1 IPC Powerlifting referee. As well as performing the duties of referee, time keeper and announcer at various club and state weightlifting competitions this year, Debra was appointed as a referee for Powerlifting at the Paralympics.

For the second year in a row, the Cougars Weightlifting Club Inc took out the title of Best Club. The Cougars club continues to be the largest weightlifting club in Queensland, managing it’s own facility at the Sleeman Sports Centre and progressing in accordance with it’s three-year strategic plan. As well as providing the venue for a large proportion of QWA events this year, the Cougars club hosted the Pre Olympic training of weightlifters from Britain, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Palau.

The Cougars club was also awarded the Club Continuous Improvement award in recognition of the club’s efforts to expand and upgrade it’s facility, which now provides 10 fully equipped training platforms; their provision of support services to athletes; their establishment of a profitable enterprise in the manufacture and sale of weightlifting training platforms; their success in gaining State Government funding to support education and training initiatives for club coaches; and their conduct of a talent identification program in local schools.

The Volunteer of the Year was Kylie Booth. Kylie is an active Level 1 coach, State referee and the assistant secretary of her club. Kylie officiated at most QWA events in 2000 and provided valuable assistance in the organisation and conduct of the Telstra National Open & Under 20 Championships in Brisbane and the Telstra Oceania & South Pacific Junior Championships at the Sunshine Coast.

Barry Harden was recognised for his Contribution to the Development of Special Groups. Barry has been the QWA Masters Coordinator for a number of years. In this honorary position, Barry works tirelessly to enhance the image of Masters weightlifting and create a vibrant masters program within Queensland. Barry edits, produces and distributes the QWA Masters Newsletter. He is also an IPC Powerlifting referee and supported IPC Powerlifting for Athletes with a Disability by officiating at state and national championships and the Paralympic Games.

The QWA Office Bearer of the Year was Michael Keelan. Mike is the Vice President of the QWA. He developed policies and guidelines for clubs, coaches and officials; encouraged and provided advice to clubs applying for assistance through Government funding programs; developed the National Officiating Program for weightlifting; and greatly assisted in the organisation and delivery of national and international events hosted by the QWA.

Ian Moir was presented with a Special Recognition Award for his services to the QWA. Above and beyond his duties as the current Executive Director of the QWA, Ian has rendered continuous service to the association over more than ten years as a former committee member, state coaching director, coach, referee, competition organiser, delegate to the Queensland Olympic Council and Australian Commonwealth Games Association (Qld), representative to the Sports Federation of Queensland and industry reference groups.

The final presentation of the night was, as always, the award for the QWA member whose achievements are deemed to be so outstanding that they are conspicuous among the group of outstanding people who have already been honoured during the evening. The QWA Achiever of the Year for 2000 was Amanda Phillips. In 2000 Amanda became an Olympian. She became the first Queensland women to compete at the Olympic Games and at those Games she achieved a new personal best result and 6th place in the 63kg category. Amanda’s path to the Olympic Games was not a smooth one. Dealing with injury and faced with uncertainty about the number of Australian women that would be selected, she determined to contest a lighter bodyweight category than she had ever competed in before, and she succeeded. The rest, as they say, is history. And so is the QWA Awards for 2000, so let’s look forward to more great achievements from our association and our athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers in 2001.

Toowoomba’s Margaret Bauer, as well as being an active lifter has also turned her hand to coaching and was awarded the Novice Coach of the year.

Queensland’s most improved male lifter in 2000 was Ken Chandler.

Sneak Preview of the 2001 Goodwill Games Weightlifting program

With less than 12 months until the 2001 Goodwill Games is held in Brisbane, organisers have given a sneak preview of the format for the Weightlifting competition. Four events – Super Heavyweight (men and women), 69kg women and 85kg men - will be contested at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre at South Bank. Dates and times for the Weightlifting sessions will be announced once the 2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane sport program is finalised.

2001 Goodwill Games Chief Executive Officer, Campbell Rose, said invitations to athletes to compete in the Goodwill Games Weightlifting would be sent based on world rankings and the results of the 2000 Olympic Games and other international competitions. “The excitement of the Goodwill Games is in the currency of elite athletes – the competition will see 16 of the world’s best men and 16 of the world’s best women in weightlifting in this city in a world class event,” said Mr Rose.

South Bank will be the Goodwill Games hub, with the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre housing six sports including basketball, boxing, gymnastics and trampoline. From August 29 to September 9 next year, more than 1300 of the world’s best athletes will be in Brisbane to compete in 14 high profile sports including athletics, swimming, figure skating and gymnastics. As many as 13,000 people will be accredited for the 2001 Goodwill Games including athletes, officials and volunteers.

Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie, said the 2001 Goodwill Games would focus an unprecedented world media spotlight on Queensland. “The event will have a terrific impact on the city of Brisbane come Games-time. It will leave a legacy of improved sporting facilities, an increased international profile for tourism and business and I am sure, many cherished memories for those who will see their sporting heroes competing in their own backyard,” he said.

The 2001 Goodwill Games will be broadcast in the U.S. on TNT (Turner Network Television) and internationally syndicated worldwide to a potential television audience of 450 million people through Turner Broadcasting Systems (TBS). Tickets for weightlifting and all other 2001 Goodwill Games events will go on sale in early 2001. Other sports and their respective venues during the 2001 Goodwill Games include:

GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS

Congratulations to Debra Keelan on receiving the Australia Sports Medal 2000. Debra has been a pioneer for women in weightlifting, serving the sport for over a decade and a half as an athlete, coach, official and volunteer administrator.

Congratulations to all the girls who got awards at the recent QWA annual dinner. The lifter awards were given on best sinclair score during 2000 and went to Rachel Trigger (Under 14), Deborah Lovely (Under 17), Amanda Phillips (Under 20),Melissa Bethune (senior), Diana Loy (masters) and Kristie Amadio (most improved).

The women also won several awards for their work off the platform - Margaret Bauer (Best novice coach), Debra Keelan (Officiator of the year), Kylie Booth (Volunteer of the year).

Congratulations to Amanda Phillips on her performance at the Olympics in September. She placed 6th in the 63kg division.

Congratulations to the girls who lifted on the Junior Oceania team at the Ettamogah Pub recently. Melissa Nightingale won bronze in the 63kg class, Amanda Phillips won Gold in the 69kg class and Deb Lovely won bronze in the 75+kg class.

…AND MORE GOSSIP

Ian Moir’s reputation for frugality took a battering recently when he traded his 18 year old Holden Gemini in on a shiny new car. That is until it became known that he was too stingy to gas up the old clunker and ran out of petrol on the way to the car yard to make to the exchange. “Yeah” said Ian, “but if I had made it, I would’ve saved five dollars!”.

Best wishes to Scott Robinson and Mandy, who are expecting another little bundle of joy to be delivered on Christmas eve. Seriously you two, don’t you think it’s time to get the TV fixed?

And congratulations to Wes and Kate Cassidy on the birth of their son Jack.

And to Ken Chandler on his recent marriage to Ailee

And to Bryan Fischer on his recent acceptance into the Royal Air Force as a Mechanical Engineer.

Telstra 2000 Oceania & South Pacific Junior Championships

By Ian Moir

More than eighteen months ago the QWA asked the AWF to bid for the 2000 Oceania Junior Championships and, if successful, grant the event to Queensland. The AWF did exactly that and a few weeks ago, what became the Telstra 2000 Oceania & South Pacific Junior Championships and Telstra 2000 Oceania Masters Challenge was conducted on the Sunshine Coast. The location for this event, Aussie World, was quite different from the usual type of weightlifting venue. Aussie World is a theme park whose major attraction, the Ettamogah Pub, is based on a long-running cartoon of the same name.

The championships were held in “The Shed”, so called because of it’s shearing shed theme, and if there was ever a contest to find the most typically “Aussie” venue, you really couldn’t go past “the shed behind the pub”! All jokes aside, Aussie World, with its friendly atmosphere, great hospitality and fairground attractions, proved a hit among visitors and locals alike. The weightlifting was very good too!

Originally, the QWA proposed to conduct these championships in Brisbane and while it would have been much easier and less expensive to do so, I have no doubt that the added attractions and facilities of Aussie World and the village-style accommodation at Rydges Oasis Resort Caloundra, contributed enormously to the overall success of the event and the enjoyment of the athletes, coaches and officials from overseas and interstate.

Locating this major event some 100km from Brisbane did of course provide some logistical challenges, but the organising committee (Mike Keelan and I) were able to once again depend upon a group of dedicated people who formed the backbone of our “competition crew”:

Venue preparation – Mike Keelan, John Nightingale, Vivien Nightingale, Kylie Booth, Debra Keelan, Jim McMurchy, Craig Wegert, Amanda Phillips, Melissa Nightingale, Angela Bentley, Miles Wydall, Jo Garner.

Loaders – Scott Robinson, Craig Wegert, Brad Monk, Jason Power, Chris Power.

Scoreboard – Jo Garner, Kristie Amadio.

Marshals – Dallas Turnbull, Melissa Bethune, John Nightingale, Ross Gagliardi.

Results – Miles Wydall.

Referees – Barry Harden, Bob Henderson, Maurie Carmichael, Debra Keelan, Angela Bentley, Kylie Booth.

These people deserve the appreciation of the QWA, for without them it would be impossible to conduct significant weightlifting events in Queensland.
