The Caribou-Targhee National Forest, Teton Basin Ranger District will soon be advertising to fill a GS-0303-5 Customer Service Representative with a duty location of Driggs, Idaho.

Housing: Government quarters are not available at this time.

This position is permanent full time year round and will provide a variety of administrative and receptionist services to the Teton Basin Ranger District. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who has both excellent people and computer skills. Duties include: Opening and closing the office and staffing the front office Monday-Friday, greeting visitors in person or over the phone; providing visitors information about recreation opportunities and explaining rules; processing incoming and outgoing mail; filing both hard copy and electronic documents; selling maps, forest product permits and association bookstore items(collection officer); publications management (inventory, order and preparation); correspondence management; small purchasing; maintaining web-based information and responding to web-based inquiries; and other duties as assigned.

Location

The District:

The Teton Basin Ranger District in southeast Idaho and western Wyoming. The District Office is located in Driggs, Idaho. Driggs is 70 miles east of Idaho Falls, Idaho and 35 miles west of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The District administers land in both Idaho and Wyoming surrounding Teton Valley, and includes the Teton Mountain Range on the west, the Palisades and Snake Mountain Ranges on the south and the Big Holes Mountain Range to the east. The 264,000-acre District includes the Jedediah Smith Wilderness, Grand Targhee Ski and Summer Resort, five developed campgrounds, 320 miles of trails and 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. The area provides extensive backcountry recreation activities for both summer and winter. Wildlife species include grizzly bear, peregrine falcon, lynx, wolverine, elk, deer, moose, and a variety of smaller forest species. Grazing by both sheep and cows occur on about 20 allotments. The timber program averages less than 1 MMBF yearly and includes commercial and public firewood and wood products.

Settlement in the Teton Valley began in the late 1880’s with farming, ranching, and logging. Today the population of 10,000 within the valley sustains an economy based on development of real estate, recreation and construction both in the valley and Jackson Hole. Farming and ranching, which used to be dominant in the valley, is disappearing. The primary community in the valley is Driggs, with a population of 2000. Victor and Tetonia, Idaho, and Alta, Wyoming are the other primary communities in the valley and have varied services. Rexburg, Idaho (45 miles), Idaho Falls, Idaho (70 miles) and Jackson, Wyoming (35 miles) are large communities in the area that provide extensive shopping opportunities.

Winter is the primary season for the Teton Basin. Snows generally start in November, and melts in April in the valley and lasts until July in portions of the high country. Average snowfall in the mountains is 300 inches. Snowfall at Grand Targhee averages 500 inches. Summers are short, but sunny and mild, providing excellent wildflower displays, cool nights, and green hills through the whole season. Precipitation in the valley averages 16.3 inches and is well distributed throughout the year. Falls are generally long and have excellent fall color displays in the surrounding mountains.

Teton Valley has been increasing in population as well as real estate prices over the last 15 years. Home prices range from $175,000 to $375,000, averaging around $275,000 per home, and lots range from $30,000 to $75,000; Housing and property in Wyoming is higher in priced than Idaho. Rentals start at $700/month, but are most are around $1000/month. Government housing is not available.

Please note that some of the District employees have commuted 35-60 minutes from the surrounding areas of Rexburg, Teton, St. Anthony, and Ashton. These areas have significantly lower housing prices.

Driggs provides school for K-12. The Teton High School was constructed in 1998. There are three elementary schools and one middle school in the valley, as well as a private Christian academy. Several day care operators offer a variety of formal services from baby-sitting to pre-school. BYU Idaho is a 4-year academic facility located in Rexburg, Idaho, 45 miles away.

Teton Valley Hospital is a fully staffed hospital facility that was enlarged in 1998, and provides, physical therapy and in–patient and outpatient emergency and surgical services. The adjacent Teton Health clinic has a staff of three doctors and four nurse practitioners that provide complete medical care to the community. Four Peaks Urgent Care also provides medical care with extended hours. Two optometrist and five dentists provide local care. There are several fitness centers offers aerobics, sports training, gymnastics, martial arts, yoga, crossfit and strength training. Jackson Hole, Rexburg and Idaho Falls provide a wide range of medical services.

Catholic, Episcopalian, Foursquare, Redeemer Covenant, Iglesia Cristiana Internacional, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and Community Bible Churches are all within the valley. Other denominations have plans for facilities in the future. Jewish congregations are in Pocatello, Idaho Falls and Jackson Hole.

World-class recreation opportunities abound in the area. Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are a short distance from the valley. The Jedediah Smith Wilderness, and Palisades and Big Holes Mountain Ranges provide outstanding opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, camping and backpacking, as well as trail for motorized vehicles and mountain bikes outside the Wilderness. Grand Targhee Resort is world famous for powder skiing, and Teton Village and Snow King Ski Resorts are a short drive away. The area also has some of the best backcountry skiing in the country. World-renowned trout fishing in the Snake, Henry’s Fork and Teton Rivers as well as numerous small streams and lakes, are here.

Teton Valley is a self-contained community with a full variety of shopping, business, medical and professional services. There is also a variety of specialty shops and art galleries, a public library and a spectrum of social services. Driggs, Tetonia and Victor have mayors and city councils; Teton County, both Idaho and Wyoming, have elected commissioners and County Sheriff Departments. Utilities that serve the area are Teton Telecom and Fall River Rural Electric. The Teton Valley News and Valley Citizen are published weekly.

START Bus Transportation is provided for seniors and other citizens, in-valley, as well as to other communities. Car rentals are available. The Driggs Airport is equipped with lights and can accommodate jets. Commercial air service (Delta, Northwest, American, and United) is available from Jackson Hole and Idaho Falls.

A wide variety of entertainment is provided by various organizations throughout the year. The Teton Valley Arts Council provides high-quality artistic events including a wide range of music, theater, dance, visual art shows and sales, artist workshops and other programs. Teton Valley has numerous restaurants, a bookstore, music store, drive-in theater, fitness center, five golf courses, tennis court, baseball diamonds, and a community ice rinks. Nearby Jackson Hole provides year round cultural events, including the summer and winter concert series.

The Forest:

The Caribou-Targhee National Forest headquartered in Idaho Falls, ID encompasses about 3 million acres in southeastern Idaho and western Wyoming. The Forest stretches in an arc from the Montana state line on the Continental Divide at the north end, along the Idaho-Wyoming state line on the east, to the Utah state line on the south. The Forest borders both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and is actively involved with issues in the Greater Yellowstone Area. The Curlew National Grasslands administered as part of the Caribou-Targhee are the only National Grasslands in the Intermountain Region. The Forest has about 200 permanent employees and includes seven Ranger Districts. Two world famous fly fishing streams (Henry’s Fork and South Fork of the Snake River) are located within the Forest, as well as very diverse wildlife populations (including grizzly bear, lynx and gray wolf) spectacular scenery and a variety of resource programs and challenges.
