Ms. Manzano
WELCOME!
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to Mater Academy! I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Nicole Manzano and I am very excited to be your child’s 7th and 8th grade teacher. This is my eighth year of teaching and my third at Mater Academy. I can assure you that it is a wonderful school! It is important for parents and students to sit down together and read and discuss the following information, as well as familiarize yourselves with my website (, go to personnel and then find my name under Language Arts). Please sign and date this form and return it back to me as soon as possible.
What your child will be working on in class:
Writing: Writing: Students will explore all genres of writing. Students will learn the rules of grammar and effective writing strategies.
Literacy: Your child will be exposed to a wide variety of strategies to help them comprehend, evaluate, and respond to a variety of texts.
Novels: Our class will be reading novels in class throughout the year. Advanced students will also be expected to read novels on their own. Your child will be receiving a letter regarding these novels in the days to come.
Reading Logs: Your child will be expected to complete 1 reading log per week. It is imperative that you, as the parent, sign these reading logs before they are handed in.
TeenBiz and Reading Plus: Throughout the course of the year, your child will be using two computer program called TeenBiz and Reading Plus (Reading) or one program, Teen Biz (Creative Writing). Students will be given a grade for this assignment on a weekly basis. They will work on it in class and at home.
GENERAL PROCEDURES
In order to succeed in this class, each student should know what is expected of them. The following are responsibilities that will guarantee a great year:
Come to class regularly and ON TIME
Have materials ready and available at ALL TIMES
Complete and turn in assignments ON TIME
ATTENDANCE:
Tardies-
Tardies will result in a lower conduct/academic grade. For every unexcused tardy there will be a grade cut for the day’s assignment. After three unexcused tardies, there will be a phone call home, as well as, detention.
Absences-
All assignments are expected to be handed in and completed ON TIME. However, if you miss school for an excused reason, you will be expected to catch up on all assignments missed, while you were out. Make-up work should be completed no later than a week after the absence occurred. A “Z” or an “F” will appear on the grade book until I have received the assignment.
*Please look to the Student Code of Conduct and Parent Contract for information on the school’s policies regarding “excused” and “unexcused” absences and tardies, along with any additional rules or details that may be of interest to you.
UNEXCUSED LATE WORK
Students will receive a “Z” in the grade book for every missed assignment. No late work is accepted, unless the student brings a note from a parent saying why the homework is not on time.
HOME LEARNING
